Birna, it loks like you are enjoying the z50 a lot (and so do we through your pictures)
-
It's a cute camera and I do appreciate cuties :)
In terms of dumbing-down restrictions, Nikon stopped far earlier than they did with the 1 Nikon system -- fortunately. Thus the Z50 has a lot to offer the serious enthusiast, apart from being so small (and cute).
-
Thanks John and Fons. February thread is already close, with three very colorful compositions.
How is that Z7 working? You sold the 850! :o

Probably it would not do for you. But there are plenty of other applications for which such a camera is excellent.

Fons' shot gives me hope...our trip crossing the Hardangervidda plateau back from our winter holiday wasn't of the easy kind. Convoy with ca 15 cars of which several managed to crash into each other. Then a senior driver got stuck and was in no way up to the task of following the car in front, resulting in loosing the sight of it's rear lights, snow packed up around every car and the whole convoy got to a halt. A monstrous snow blower had to be sent in and the 40km stretch took us 6 hrs...
-
Oh dear. Convoy driving is a challenge. Last time I did this there it "only" took 3 hrs.
Do bring extra warm clothing and food.

If you are used to the ergonomics and use of the Z6 the D850 feels like a step back. When I tested the Z7 I liked what I experienced.
It is also much more convenient to work with more lenses than just the F-mount, and the Z6 and Z7 are complementary in my view.
-
Makes sense. I use the many options of the Z6 in daily basis. I have borrowed the d850 a couple of times and was impressed, even if I don't need those files. Z7 should be very attractive.

Weather indeed is unpredictable here up in the North. However, the seasons do march on and the days become markedly longer. Buds respond and break, if the ambient temperature isn't too harsh.
Leafing Silver Birch Betula pendula. Repro-Nikkor 85mm f/1 @f/1 on my Z50. This is a situation for which I would have enjoyed some in-camera VR, a feature which alas the little Z50 lacks.

The Cyclop T3C-2 (Helios) 100 mm f/2.0 Lens.
A rare lens which comes from Russian military night vision device, called 'T3C-2'. Also called 'Helios 100mm' or 'Mini-Cyclop'. This optic hasn't had any aperture blades, no other mark on the lens body, except an infinity mark. Heavy metal and glass construction. In the M42 mount.
Some information can be found on Mflenses http://forum.mflenses.com/mini-cyclop-t3c-2-t49828,highlight,+mini%20+cyclop.html (http://forum.mflenses.com/mini-cyclop-t3c-2-t49828,highlight,+mini%20+cyclop.html)

Thank you Sten! Your observation makes perfect sense. Shibuya is indeed a 3D maze, and you would easily lost sense of where you are vertically and horizontally.

my sister's husband wants to become a model. I do not want to become a fashion photographer...
-
He has too little belief in you, Frank :) We know you can do it !!
-
Between realities today and for once, rather bored. So playing around with items scattered all over my work table. My oestrogen plaster box became the target for the Ultra-Micro-Nikkor 28mm f/1.8 on a Sony NEX-3. Despite taken with a hand-held camera, the image appears literally razor sharp. A wonder I managed to focus this precise.
I had to cut severely back on jpg quality to make the image fit to NG file size limitations. Also the crop is severe as the Ultra-Micro-Nikkor lens will not cover the entire APS-C frame of the camera.
-
He has too little belief in you, Frank :) We know you can do it !!
He wants me to become a fashion photographer, but I have next to no interest in fashion. Of course I can do it. I went to a Bundesliga Photo Workshop and the teacher, a professional sports shooter said: "you got it in you, you can do it" but I do not like spending my life in football stadiums and not at fashion events. I did horse photos and people liked them. But I do not like the horse owner society.
So I stay with food and Interieur and People / Portraits.

I like the composition, colors, and symmetry, John! Well done.
How do you like the responsiveness of the Z-series for your work?
-
Interestingly we now see wintery scenes once the calendar tells us it's officially Spring :)
Availed myself of the winter sun shining on white snow to test whether I could shoot UV hand-held with the Panagor 21mm f/4 lens on my monochrome NEX-5N (courtesy of Vivek Iyer and a spin-off from the last NG Photo Race 2019 in The Hague). No problems using a Baader U filter rear-mounted to the lens. Actually I was surprised how good this old lens apparently is. This is 1/60 sec, f/8, ISO 200 with the Baader U, which is indicative of a pretty UV-sensitive system. The ARW file is run through MonoChrome2DNG (courtesy Iliah Borg) to extract the best quality. For once, my standard converter Photo Ninja falls short of the mark.
The scene itself is just the view from my porch thus not of special interest except for testing purposes. But it does indicate the recent change of scenery, and the qualities of the lens.
-

Thanks Peter.
Responsiveness is very good. AF is swift and quick, both with AF-S as with Z lenses.
Weight and handling (viewfinder/screen) is a plus. Loading batteries in-camera is a plus. The XQD cards are expensive but fast.
It is more convenient to take 2 Z bodies with you than 2 DSRL's.

Yes, now I can shoot UV with a fisheye !! Even hand-held, thanks to the monochrome NEX-5N given to me by Vivek Iyer (the nice guy we ran into during the NG Photo Race in The Hague, last November). The lens is a SUNEX 5.6mm f/5.6 and a Baader U was used for filtering out anything other than UV.
This was just a quick and dirty shot at f/5.6, 1/40 sec, ISO 200, nothing of particular importance, except for a proof of concept. Under heavy overcast winter skies that tells a lot of the system sensitivity to UV. Good news for me for the upcoming trip to visit Andrea in New Mexico!

It had been rainy during the daytime but cleared up in the night.
-
Fallen pine needles and staghorn lichens on a (very) wet rock face.
This is close to the enhanced near limit of my OM 28mm f/3.5 lens on the Z6, ie. around 1:1.5 in the very foreground. Exposure f/5.6, around 1/10 sec, ISO 100, N=151 frames stacked in Zerene Stacker.
I'm still experimenting with the technique. It provides excellent clarity of small objects close-up, and brings with it massive efforts in the shooting and post-processing stages. Is it worth its while? I have no definite answer yet. Still just curious. The handling of objects poking outside the sliver-thin depth-of-field zone is much better than what can be attained with movements and Scheimpflug's rule, or to be more precise, the potential for near limitless depth of field is there. The gain is counteracted by deficiencies in the stacking method(s) that tend to make unwanted edge blurs and necessitate tedious retouching. There is no such ting as a free lunch.

I have zero knowledge of the technique but I like the result, Birna.

True, Peaking has the same character as the 'green dot' A nice aid, but not very predictable. For me, the real strength of the Z6 and Z7 is the Focus EVF Zoom-in (in combination with IBIS and all the Nikkors you can use without restriction *if you love to shoot wide open.

Being stuck inside in quarantine isn't my favourite pastime to put it mildly. I managed to sneak out at night and grab a few Tussilago farfara flowers coming into bloom along the road verge outside, though. This kept me occupied for a while, doing comparison shots with my UV-Nikkors 105/4.5 on the monochrome NEX-5N and the Nikon D3200. I used a separate lens for each camera so I could shot the subject rapidly without delay for switching lenses and filters. The ubiquitous Baader U filter was used for both, rear-mounted for the Sony NEX and built-in for the D32++.
The monochrome NEX delivers sharper details and the D3200 much more pleasant colours. So they compliment each other. Below, a comparison at 100%.

Streets are empty, no traffic on the motorways, looks like holiday season, but no option for any takeway coffee etc.
Here the traffic is pretty much normal and the stores have a lot of shoppers, although they also have many empty shelves. The Corona virus has people hoarding, reminding me of a shark feeding frenzy.
This morning my wife got to Costco at 0700 to get in line for their 1000 opening time, and there were 55 people in front of her at that hour (below you will se how she was able to determine that number). We don't hoard, but it was time for us to buy toilet paper, as we normally do, and by the time 1000 rolled around there were at least a couple of hundred, or more, people behind her in line. Costco has had a run on their Kirkland brand TP, as well as other brabds lately, and their daily delivery sells out minutes after the store opens, even with limiting each shopper to 1 package per visit. Actually, they have had a run on every brand, just like all of the other stores, who's TP shelves remain empty. Costco sends out an employee, about 2 hours prior to the store opening, to give numbers to those in line. When the store opens 30 minutes early for TP shoppers only, if you don't have a number to show they wont let you in.Those that lack a number have to wit for the normal opening time, when of course. the TP is already sold out. This number stuff became necessary due to people pushing and shoving to cut into the line once the doors were open. So at least Costco has established some degree or order. While it may seem extreme duty for my wife to go through all of that just to buy TP, it's that or no TP.
It's hard to tell who, among the shoppers might be hoarding.or like us, just replenishing their supply. As it turns out, Kirkland TP is the highest volume item sold at Costco by far, with over 1 billion packages sold annually. It's also one of the best bargains around, if one is up to the current challenges to buy any.

Stuck inside by Covid-19 quarantine, one gets sufficient time to ponder a lot. Of life, nature, and all their ramifications. Perhaps too much time? Thinking can hurt, too.
It's eerily quiet outside and only occasionally a child or its parents can be spied moving around. The playground across the road is empty all through the day.
I put the old Fisheye 10mm f/5.6 OP on my modified Z6 and shot some depressing snapshots out the window. Then back to the computer and read the latest Coronavirus statistics from the JHU Dashboard. On a per capita basis, Norway is in the top tier to suffer from Covid-19 impact. Even more depressing.

Allright, you must have modified your Z6 to that extent that the system doesnt revert into crop mode which is what happens when i mount the 10mm f/2.8.
Corona or not here in the Netherlands i can still go out and work but i dont mingle socially is not my job anyway.
The idea to lock oneself up literally doesnt appeal unless it supports a higher purpose a private contemplative retreat but that will need to go beyond any neurotic thought processes.
Dont worry about this virus business too much is my idea.
Best to you all, and make this passage safe and sound!

Contracting Covid-19 is serious and may prove fatal for my health as I'm very susceptible to any lung diseases. The quarantine is not because of any whim or free will on my part. I'll stay put as long as necessary.

Birna - I am in complete sympathy with your need for quarantine, and your restlessness (?) while in purdah - I feel exactly the same. Though I don't have any particular lung difficulies, I am 75 and have heart (pacemaker fitted), prostate and hypertension problems and am very careful about any foray into the world outside our garden (luckily it is large), where there might be PEOPLE, and therefore the virus.
This thread is such a fantastic kaleidoscope of images, stories and comments I really wanted to be part of it. March has been such a dreadful month (weather) that I haven't much to offer - the Ben Ghlas/Ben Lawers massif is something I see every day, from the garden I mentioned.

It's a bit eery going into a town or city that's normally bustling with people & cars isn't it?
But a bit like those stats that people are starting to share about how pollution levels are dropping, this is maybe an eye-opener to possibilities we'd otherwise thrown away some years ago.
Back to "normal" when the pandemic dies down????

Here the traffic is pretty much normal and the stores have a lot of shoppers, although they also have many empty shelves. The Corona virus has people hoarding, reminding me of a shark feeding frenzy.

It's not known. But closing down all the pubs and restaurants is, on the long term, not the best what can happen and may lead to outbursts .

Wonderful Armando.
Any backstory to its acquisition?
well ... it has been ages since there has been good condition for astrophoto
driving to a darker location would be one hour or so, but was feeling lazy and we are supposed to stay home
outside my house there is new street lights now leds vs the ugly yellow ones, but these are brighter, so I wasn't sure if this will affect the long exposure any worst than the yellow sodium lights
climbed to the roof
aligned my equatorial mount
mounted the 70-300 on the x-t3 and left it taking 1 min exposures for 90 minutes
about half of the exposures were usable , others were ruined due to vibrations from traffic behind the house
spent another 90 mins this morning doing the post processing
-
Great detail in M42 Armando, specially considering the light pollution. Yes, those LEDs seem to have changed light pollution characteristics here too - why do they need to make them brighter - they should rather try to save that energy. Only got three nights of imaging this year, and only a couple in the fall. Good weather most of the winter coincided with full moon and when it got dark it got clouded. Just towards the end of our 3 month cold period (typical temperature -30°C) it shifted so that we got in those clear moonless nights, but now it got warm and cloudy the whole time. I am still working on my flats, so hope to get finished versions soon.
If you have a chance may be try comet Atlas which seems to have an interesting development now:
https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2020/03/16/comet-atlas-is-brightening-faster-than-expected/ (https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2020/03/16/comet-atlas-is-brightening-faster-than-expected/)
I just hope for some moonless dark nights here before the dark is gone before summer, but with the current forecast chances seem slim before the next moon.

Akira, your camera can do IR in a pinch?
So far as I'm aware, the unmodified Sigma fp can do IR much better than the unmodified D2H or D40 that I had.
I started a dedicated thread for the UV/IR performance of the unmodified Sigma fp in the sister site UV photography. With 89B equivalent and the camera's good high-ISO performance, you could even handhold the camera to shoot IR.

the darker foliage is because of a passing cloud. You can see the decrease of contrast in the shadows on the floor as well. :)

I got these roses as an appreciation for my participation and photography on the International Women's Day, 8th March. A few days later, I went into a Covid-19 quarantine, and then no more chances of meeting the one who gave them to me. The roses suffer from the exile and so do I. Well, life has to go on. There is always Skype. So near and so far away. We are only separated by approx. 4m (neighbouring apartments), but it might be the distance Earth-Moon (without the transmission delay, though).

-
Birna, I seldom comment but do love these roses, and the story and sentiment expressed.
To all, really appreciate and enjoy these daily posts, especially during these times...
-
Thanks Tim, appreciated. The days tend to get long in isolation even though I have plenty of tasks to attend to. However, collecting the energy to recharge "batteries" every day gets challenging over time I can assure you. Plus I miss my kids who live about 40 km away.
On a side note, the Rodenstock which frequently is frowned upon because of its massive field curvature and heavy spherical aberrations becomes more and more sharp across its projected image circle the nearer you can get the lens to the sensor plane. Unfortunately there is a shutter that limits how near you can approach thus infinity focus seems impossible at present. The lens, an integral part of X-ray imaging machines in the old days, carried a very hefty price tag commensurate with its heft and bulk. Lots of thick, high-index glasses inside. I do have seen outcome from this very lens copy on a high-speed TV camera and the rendering was high contrast, and the image very sharp.
-
Thank you Colin and Akira,

Oh, I see. Thank you. The passing cloud made the image even more dramatic!

Birna, fine image. I'm curious, is the oof portion another coltsfoot flower? I'm assuming it is. That is some sort of bokeh.
-
Yes, another individual of the same species.
I used another adapter than with the roses posted yesterday, so got closer. However, with this lens getting closer [to the subject] implies the field curvature and other aberrations will increase. Quite significantly, in fact, as the image above demonstrates. You do get rewarded with awesome bokeh, though.

I continue exploring what I can extract from the Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75, again with the Nikon Z50. This time, applying a basic "tilt/shift" approach. Which works, sort of, with tongue in cheek. The colour rendition of this monster chunk of glass is somewhat unpredictable. Nothing to blame on the lens as such, as it never was designed to handle visible "white" light.
-
I just heared India is going into total lock down for three weeks. A big outbreak in your country would mean the worst pandemic since the Spanish flu. Gosh. Nature is fighting back on us pretty hard.
Yup Frank, many are not handling it well. My active 19 year old son an example ;D . I have been in more than a few lock downs/curfews in my life but normally for security. Let me see, I have water, electricity, Air Conditioning, Netflix, books, nice house, food to eat, resources to meet all commitments.... then I think of the millions that do not know when they eat next, have no fresh water, live inside fixed boundaries permanently (or at least foreseeable future). So a glass at least half full :) .
We will have to see how it turns out. Maybe it is Nature's population control. I will take the opportunity to try some of the features of my cameras which I never use and refine some setup menus ... ::)
Birna, love the roses :) nd Buddy, very nice, image and thoughts.

My red roses are severely wilting at present. However, in a pinch they still can make the motif for whatever photographic gear is trained upon them. In this case the enigmatic "Enigma" 125mm f/1.2 mirror lens on my NEX-5N monochrome. Added a dab of colour later as the roses are, or at least, were, red once upon a time. Just sat in my garden, then noticed one by one, all the neighbourhood bees were coming down to drink from a small tub
Playing with my 300mm PF, D500 and Kenko extension tubes.
Quite a handful to frame & focus before the bee moves!
I can only recommend to use one of these full contact extension tubes, Dr. Lens has created. they feature VR and AF! But: As you are soooo fast you probably do not need these.
-
Very nice bee Colin!

Thanks Frank & Nasos.
(I'm not that fast but there was a steady supply of bees)

Thanks everyone.
I did a bit of insect macro work a few years ago with my D300 and 105VR and sometimes a ring flash.
Yesterday's was with the newer body, plus the 300mm and extension tubes.
But the things that really helped nail the shot were
- Plenty of thirsty bees (almost queing up at times!)
- Full sunshine (bright enough to shine through its abdomen, plus warmth to get them active)
Look carefully below the bee's head:
The orange shape is its tongue, dipping into the water.
There was no lapping - maybe it is hollow and they use it like a straw??

maybe next time gently ask the bee to land a bit the left , so your frame is cleaner :)

When movement is restricted, less orthodox solutions must be found. In search of the tiny tiny C-19 rascals, there is a need to bring out the really big 'uns :)
The NEX-5N is almost invisible at the rear of the huge 360-1200 Nikkor.
-
Impressive. Is that the AI-s version?
Did you find some af the small buggers ;)
-
This is the K version, with a very low serial no. (174067). According to Roland's Nikon pages, 56 units were made of these impressive zooms in the K livery. With AI and AIS models, the total still is well below 200 samples. Thus qualifies as a Nikkor rarity presumably.
It has had its foot extensively modified to allow mounting it securely on a robust tripod. The original design was severely flawed and inadequate for such a massive lens (it weighs more than 9 kg). I also added a "G"-type CPU. The lens was sold as "junk" by a Japanese dealer many years ago, because it had been stored under damp conditions and had lots of fungus inside. One could not look through the lens -- it was totally opaque. Otherwise it was practically unused. Turned out the fungus was only on a single glass surface and easily removed. Thus the purchase was a bargain for approx. 500 USD incl. shipping.
No C-19 indicators seen -- so far. But I'll keep looking.

Akira, what's your opinion about the Sigma FP's IQ and handling?
Peter, I was pleasantly surprised by its IR capability. I used D2H and D40, both of which were known to offer usable IR-capability without modification. But Sigma fp shows higher sensitivity to IR than any of them. Given the up-to-date high-ISO capability, it is the best camera for IR without modification, so far as you can live with the tripod.
Of course, unlike D2H, Sigma fp doesn't seem to suffer from IR contamination at all in normal situations. That is also surprising.
It could be capable for the astro-photography to shoot nebulae containing H-alpha spectrum.

Isolation continued - due to my age I am not allowed to leave home even for essential items as in food so I am dependent on family and very good friends to shop on my behalf, fortunately family food choices are fairly straightforward therefore food shopping is limited to basic items, milk, bread, vegetables etc.
This image will probably exceed my monthly allowance but it is near the end of the month, following from my previous post this is another view of what I have as a form of enforced leisure activity for the next 10 weeks approx !

Another 3 weeks of groceries secured - a rather stressful experience, as it was almost as crowded as it use to be in spite of the lock down in Alaska, and not everybody were following best practices. Unknown to me at the time, lock down orders were tightened up from 5PM same day, so may be there was a rush because of that although grocery shopping is of course still allowed. Luckily Alaska lags behind most countries and the rest of the US - 102 confirmed cases and only one death since the first case about 3 weeks ago. But I got near but at safe distance to a colleague who was among the first 17... Scientists have tended to travel a lot. May be we will now discover that it was not necessary.

Fons & Thomas, thanks for the reply, in the Uk there is a general lock down rule but as a nearly 74 year old with younger wife who is a type 1 insulin diabetic we received a supplementary message saying do not leave home as we are considered high risk. With the present strain on the health service we both feel it better if we do not put ourselves in a situation where we may need medical assistance when the resources are needed elsewhere.

Yes, I found that map really mesmerizing, I have caught myself just sitting and studying different regions for longer periods and wondering how conditions feels like at different locations, how the mechanics of the weather systems works. I had not explored the different settings, thanks for pointing out the ability of forecasting.
-
Today something more local: After a ski trip in nice clear weather, where I discovered that the SD card in the slot of the D500 was not there (time to get a card for the other slot ::) ), I got back to my cabin and at dusk discovered that this moose cow with two grown calves were hanging around in the area. She looked pretty relaxed here in spite of some dogs barking inside the neighbor cabin. I also think I heard someone were playing a flute, so may be that is what is making her happy and listening. (Head of one of the smaller ones behind her, seems to have lost some hair on its snout.)
-
Stuck inside now on beginning of third week, life isn't very exciting. However there are highlights (downlights too).
I all of a sudden found an XQD card that I had forgotten was lost a year ago, and am studying the footage acquired back then. Actually images were taken in March, 2019 on that card so I might present some here as "archeology finds", perhaps? All my current XQD cards are colour-coded (nail polish to the rescue) according to what camera they should be used in. This card was unmarked, so verifies its age.
After the exciting find of the XQD card it was only befitting Windows 10 on my main work station refused to play ball and amongst other stupid and odd behaviour drag-drop became non-functional and denied my moving any files :( :( Not much of a work station then. I spent the rest of the day trying to fix the issues to no avail. It just got worse. Probably I got hit in the aftermath of some faulty Windows updates of which there recently have been several I'm told. Oh well, I still had kept the Win7 installation thus put the old SSD back in and voilá all was well again.
I then used the resurrected machine to run quickly through a stack of UV images of Tussilago farfara Coltsfoot. An example is posted below. This spring flower appears like clockwork every year and is always reliable. Just like my UV-Nikkors.
Nikon D3200, Baader U filter, UV-Nikkor 105mm f/4.5 with extension to make 1.5X magnification, 2*800 Ws Broncolor studio flash, 41 image stack by Zerene, 100% crop.

Thanks to Øivind and the others that posted comments to my picture of the swan.
For me the D500 with the 300 PF and the TC17 works very well. It is a very light combination to walk around with. I usually have it in a Black Rapid strap attached to an Ishoot (great and inexpensive) lens collar, that can be mounted in reverse to give a good balance with the TC. The 10 fps is a big advantage in these situations. Of course, not all pictures in the burst were sharp.
