Spring is in the air and the sap is rising. Importantly, sugar maple sap is rising and it is the time to harvest it. Westfield Heritage Village had a demonstration of how the sap was refined in the 19th century. The sap starts very dilute. It is heated and reduced in the large bucket. Then it is transferred to the medium bucket, before finally being transferred to the small one.
Note the tool in the gentleman's hand. The final bucket needs to be monitored closely because it evaporates relatively quickly. Is the syrup ready? He takes a sample and watches how quickly it pours along the channel in his tool. Two seconds is about right.

Thank you, Arturo.
This gentleman is a local Mohawk. He was demonstrating how maple sap was refined before Europeans arrived. You can see the sap in the hollowed tree trunk. Round stones were heated in the fire and then carried to the sap using a deer antler. This process was much slower than was possible using the iron buckets of the Europeans. The buckets were much sought after in trade!

Returning from Paco's sunny Spain to Nordic normality means *snow*. And cold weather. My lungs prefer being indoors and I totally agree.
Ruth is pre-cultivating tomato plants in a hydroponic setup. Perfect for the CRT Nikkor-O 55mm f/1.2 on the V1. Some times ago, I got a heap of used V1 bodies through my Nikon repair connection. These bodies had defects that doomed them to being discarded. This particular camera used here had a scratch on the sensor, which is hard to detect unless I look specifically for it. Erik turned the camera into M42 mount so I can put the odd lens on it through focusing helicoids. Other V1 bodies host Ultra-Micro-Nikkor lenses for dedicated close-ups.
Old does not equal obsolete :) These cameras, despite their many dumbed-down features, still are enjoyable and pleasant to use. Image quality can be more than adequate as well.

Hello Fons. It's private land within a protected natural park, and the law prohibits fencing animals. I believe it's some kind of fence or boundary that circumvents the ban.

Nice image and nice reprocessing, John!
I've recently been reviewing some 10-15 yrs old images taken with my D40 (my first digital SLR). Back in the autumn I bought a 4K factory calibrated (sRGB) monitor and thought it would be fun to see the images in full resolution and good color balance - most of them looks great. I didn't have a calibrated monitor back then and my post processing skills was fairly poor and I often used the JPG's. Luckily I mostly shot NEF as well, back then.

Good image, Bent, that describes the weather situation well. But the spectator crowd did show up anyway, which proof that the locals of Trondheim are used to bad and variable weather :-)
I was at the XC championship as well (at the sprint sessions 27 th february), but had better luck with sunny weather.
I am not very surprised over these weather conditions in Trondheim in Mars (I studied there from 1996 to 2001), but to see the snow conditions in many mountain areas in Norway this winter is really depressing. It has been several warm periods high up in the mountains in southern Norway this winter, where it use to be stable and cold during this period.
Here in the mountains near Lillehammer, the snow situation is better, but still below average..

Yes, yesterday was a beautyful day at Sjusjøen. And today the main race of the 54 km XC Birkebeinerrennet with more than 9000 participants was arranged (I actually participated for the first time, and did unfortunately not take any photos :-) ), with excellent snow conditions from the valley to the mountains . It passes through Sjusjøen. So it is not all negative everywhere.

It works in that sequence since the TC is F-mount. Unfortunately, Nikon has severely limited the options for using the TC14Z, thus you cannot simply add this TC to any Z-mount lens which fits. Or to the FTZ since the latter physically blocks the TC14Z. A pity as the Z-version of the 1.4X is really good. It works wonders on the 70-180/2.8Z and the 400/4.5Z.

Oh yes, lazy or even cold-sensitive photographers: a few weeks ago I opened the window to photograph the full moon. From the comfort of my room. None of the photos were sharp and I was already doubting the quality of the 400mm 4.5. It was only later that I realized that the living room radiator between the lens and the moon was making an unwanted contribution to the image result.
You definitely have to watch out for heat diffraction at 400mm.

The added benefit of this combination was it allowed me shooting hand-held at slow shutter speeds like 1/30-1/50 sec. After all, the sun had set long ago so darkness prevailed.

I just ckecked: the Z4.5/400S is 30 Gramms heavier and 3 Centimeters shorter, so about same same
Hmm,
300PF with FTC II : 971g (weighed without collar as that is optional), length ca 18 cm with FTC II adapter.
Roland's list:
400/4.5 S weight 1245/1160 (last number without tripod foot?) length 234.5 mm
That is some heavy 30 grams, and long 3 cms ;D
So at best 400/4.5 S ca. 200 gram heavier and 5.5 cm longer - it compares closer to the 500PF without FTC adapter.

I feel the discussion was:
if you already own the 300PF and the TC14E3
do you really need the Z4.5/400S?
And I said: Yes, if you got enough money and space!
The same goes for the 2.0/200VR plus TC14E3
Do you still need the 2.8/300VR as well?
Yes, if your work calls for it: absolutely

Many thanks for sharing those images, Daniel! First of all, great snow-covered mountainscape - especially the mood in the second one! Fantastic level of detail and, yes, it is crazy with those ski tracks - also a bit crazy with handheld at 1/30 but I remember the lens having surprisingly great stabilisation, being fairly light weight and balancing really well on my Z7. It's light and portable enough to bring on a longer hike and its size fits well in my backpack .. once I get a chance to borrow it again ;D

I'm using a BG40 filter on my full-spectrum modified Z5 to allow adequate visible-light rendering. Not perfect, and I ought to make a calibration profile for this usage. But in a pinch, it'll do.

Earlier this week, I was waken up by roaring engines and blue flashlights. The Sea Rescue Team had received a call from a fishing boat signaling a sea incident. They deployed 100 meters from our home. They didn’t find a body, but a migrant drowned that night, 50 km up north.

Thanks Fons. I can see it's your favourite. The rendering is great, much sharper and more usable than the AIS version. the G creates very pleasable images.
The 28E is somehow too sharp, too clinical. A bit like the mirrorless looks. It's more useable for architecture and technical shots.

I remember looking at some wonderful 10x8" b&w prints back in the early 80's and feeling i was nowhere near the level of richness & quality they'd achieved.

It turned out these were contact prints direct from the source 10x8" sheet film negs!!

Capturing the scene, for lectures like this with a display as well as lighting in the room is not an easy task as you so obviously are aware of, mastered well here IMHO
