This thread is to post full RGB shots in which the scene is monochrome, not the processing or from the rare monochrome cameras.
This opens the opportunity to create monochrome scenes like a full set of stuffed animals, clothes and toys from a girls room all in pink or purple, desert scenes all in brown and yellow tones or night scenes in which "all cats are grey"...
Here is a classical "all grey" day scene (D600 1.4/35mm AiS @1.4 & 1/1600 s)

I'll open with this image, obtained while I was doing a study on the water-air interface and its geometry. This was conducted in order to get a better understanding of what is known as "flashing" in underwater light measurements. The "flashing" itself is rapid oscillations of high- vs low-intensity light, the intensity of which can surpass that of the incident sunlight several times. The casual observer can observe it as a pattern of bright ripples across the bottom of a swimming-pool or floor of a shall lake.
I did this by using the water film itself as a refractive interface and placed a light-sensitive paper 10 cm below the surface. In practice I went to the nearby river, unfortunately at that time in violent spate, at the darkest time of the night, around 0230 (late summer), bravely waded the river until I had water chest high, then exposed in sequence the sheets of paper in my 8x10" film holder using a SB-24 flash as light source. Had to hold the flash in my mouth because the hands were occupied with the film holder and the photosensitive medium. Then, after exposing my two sheets, back to my home where I temporarily arranged my bath to become a dark-room. Took me a couple of nights to get acceptable quality and overall it was a very cold and wet experience. Which I wouldn't have been without.
The photo paper was b/w, but I found the images were easier to interpret if they were tinted, so added a "water blue" to them.
By the way, the interface pattern is fractal and in the processing, I ended up with a jpg that grew exponentially lest I added some blur to the original scan.
-
Fascinating and confusing. Is it a stretch to the topic? I wait and see what other ideas might pop up. I have
some I my archive and some inmy head... need time.... full schedule...
-
The capture was on b/w photo paper ... Should fit your theme perfectly ....
-
Interesting effect and story, Bjørn.
A sample of green's. But in comparision with a real green one. I was looking for the right definition of 'Monochrome'.
Original and the second one with colours in green-channel only (hence Photoshopped)
-
I changed the title to "Monochrome scenes, not black and white conversions"
To better distinguish it from other threads.
John. Love the first one better. A natural, fresh impression.

Very innovative an creative and with excellent results! Must have been very rewarding with such a end result.
Nice textures and colors Fons :)

Fons: is that ultraviolet? Very cool effect.
All: did someone do a shooting with an albina in a white dress scating on new ice and fresh snow?

Thread works even better than expected. Seems to encourage some out of the box thinking!

I don´t know if this is what you have in mind but nightclub and stage images can be often monochromatic.

Bjørn, that image is absolutely brilliant.

Bjørn: i love the insect shot, recalls so many pictures from Memory
Paco: the night club scene is adorable!

Thanks Frank. This is what came to mind at first...

Playing with available light is my thing, sometimes light can render a regular scene monochrome by being at the right place at the right time. If the stars align and I find my shot it'll make the rest of the trip worthwhile, even when its just that one image (I shoot very little compared to my NG travel mates anyway).
Here's a few, yellow, blue, gold and yellow again. Some have been posted in other topics before but I don't mind if you don't mind ;D

Thanks for commenting, Frank, I very much prefer the blowing snow. :o When I captured this shot through the wind shield, I remembered the statement that sand blasting was not covered in the car insurance... I was supposed to camp but had to get into the first motel I could find at dusk which was not a good one. Next day I moved into more of a bead and breakfast style place which was very nice and quiet, Crows Nest at the beachfront in Walvis Bay.

Jakov. Wonderful dance shot. Should be in "dancing", as black, gold and skin are not "monochrome". Please.
Paco: Wonderful still of this combination, still black & red are not "monochrome" together.
-
Thanks, Frank.
All images in this thread have black + another color...
-
Variations -gradations of one color from the lightest to the darkest is monochrome, I think. Ready to be wrong again :)
-
Ok. If we extend the rule to one color plus black I want to make sure we do not
extend to color key shots.
What about gold black and skin then? I feel not.
-
No black here and not totally mono either but close enough I hope.

Dear Frank,
Tolerance is a good thing.
It's not my fault that the dancer is not African but Caucasian :)
Or are there also levels of blackness when it comes to skin tones?
Besides, Paco and I were having a laugh and enjoying our posted inspirational images.
Please stop moderating threads on NG and telling people where they should or should not post, even if you have started the thread.
It's offensive and it is not your job.
We are all here to learn more about photography, and please excuse our ignorance if we see monochrome images differently than you do.
If you only wanted to point out your opinion, but I just understood it too harshly, I apologize.
I am looking forward to finally meeting you in person in Scotland and matching your face with your words.
I always fear of ill communication because I don't see people's faces, their expressions and gestures...
I am certain we will have great fun over good food and good wine.
Yours, Jakov

Well indeed there was a discussion on this matter in the beginning, where i mentioned this point, but was removed.
All best wishes from the b/w thread that has been on for awhile, but has largely been ignored, makes you think doesnt it.
-
Fons, in the themed topics the majority of the posted images comes from existing images and not newly created content. So after a while the content to post dries up when new ones aren't being made. At least this is how it goes with me, pretty much posted all the images I had uploaded on my Flickr account in the last decade or so.
And there is a clear distinction between monochrome images (can be any colour) and images that are made into black and white, some images in the former category might look like b&w due to the lack of colour but thats because there was no colour to be captured. Those images can of course be posted in both topics but of all the images posted here only includes a handful.
-

Dear Fons.
As I was asked NOT to moderate this thread I just hint back to the original idea:
Monochrome scenes, so all shades of green, all shades of blue, all shades of yellow, all shades of brown, all shades of grey. The last one could LOOK like it was BW, but it is in fact not, all others do not even look like a BW
A BW picture can be created from any color photo, a scene that is monochrome is rare.

Frank

A really long lens produces a compressed aerial perspective of the spring birches of the Northern Øyern Delta, Norway. The view encompasses about 5 km front to back. Just before the leafing, the birches take on a very special brownish red colour as the sap rises.

I still own the 10 OP and the 360-1200, but have sold off the 300/2 ....
I know, and you keep the elusive TC-14C, right?
By the way, all rare lenses I mentioned came from a collection of a famous Nikon aficionado who passed away more than 20 years ago that included Reflex Nikkor 2000/11 and Fisheye 6/2.8. The 360-1200 zoom is complete with the focusing lever and now elusive 122mm L39c protection/UV-cut filter.
-
Yes, I have the TC-14C. Now with a CPU of course.
My 360-1200 is a "K" and according to Roland Vink's page of serial numbers, less than 100 were made of the K + AI taken together. I have it complete with the four focusing levers, HN-17 hood, and 122 mm filters. It has a "G" type CPU to make it compatible with all modern Nikons. It is even possible to hook up the tiny 1 Nikons through the FT-1 adapter. Must snap a picture of that funny combination some time.

greater context somewhere?
Will do. It will take some time because I´m very busy. Thanks for the interest

Death Descends Swift As A Razor Blade
Bjorn,
A very strong image, especially when you consider the hazards of being a bird in a modern world.
-
Amazing shot, Bjørn, not only the theme but also that beautiful oranges. Assume you used a long lens for this composition?
-
It was taken with the 200/2 AFS and a D2X. I and my field assistant spent several hours at the location, a hot-spot on the migratory bird routes to Norway, while the sun set and made the open landscape and sky awash in rich warm colours.
I am familiar with the scenery and knew the sun would set over the sea, so the the shots obtained the afternoon were just an exercise of patient waiting. After all the main subject was pretty stationary.
Although much of the landscape here is a Nature Preserve because of the migratory birds, in true Norwegian style a huge aluminium melter works has been put straight into the location leading to power lines criss-crossing the locality. This probably to maximise profit and collateral damage to birdlife, I suppose.

Not on the original. Lots of ripples in the sand. When such an image is downscaled, you'll get beat patterns sooner or later.

This scene, captured a few days ago, could be posted in any of the following threads: Minimalistic images, In wait for the spring, Pictorial UV, Monochrome, ...
I choose to show it here. This is the onset of ice break-up on 'my' local river, on a section where water flow is sluggish.

A classic scene from a very happy (for most of us) shoot in Copenhagen. Jakov played the model, Erik managed the studio light and released the cans, and I tried to snap the picture at the optimum point in time.

Doubts about this one, is it Monochrome enough?
-
On my opinion, John, #94, 95, 96 all fit perfectly into the realm of the opening post.
We had one discussion on whether skin plus black plus white plus one color fits.
I am still unsure if "skin" is a color at all and not a huge set of colors.
I really like to see a "monochrome nude" (skin only) to be better able to judge this.

Methane, the harbinger of global climate change.
Please tell us more about this magnificent shot, Bjørn. Is that Methane stuck in ice?
-
Yes. A common sight on productive water bodies when the ice is "black", ie. fresh and thin with no snow on top. Always a conflict between getting the shot and not crashing through the delicate ice sheet.
You can actually, by punching a small hole, set the escaping methane gas afire.
-

As long as one manages to stay on the ice and not being under it, I agree. Unfortunately, the latter scenario has occurred to me more times than I like to remember. Being trapped under ice is not a pleasant experience.
The "grass" by the way is Common Cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium), which of course is not a grass at all :D
I was submersed into a bog with particle-laden water trickling through it, hence the illusion of moving water. In reality, there was an ice layer on top with cracks through which snow fell. Exposure time probably around 2 minutes.

They are not that difficult to tell apart ... Not at all.
I know, just cracking jokes about botanists. My botany education is a few years old but I try to keep it afloat by using "Lids flora" now and then.
-
One of the landmarks in my vicinity is the "King's Oak", a free-standing cluster of summer oaks on open fields adjacent to my local lake (Maridalsvannet, Oslo). These oaks grow slowly partly because the soils are not very productive at their location, and partly because the microclimate is on the cold side for this species. Written sources from the 16th century tell the trees were already large at that time, so they must be between 500 and 1000 years old by now.
The characteristic profile is often seen in advertising and serves as a frond for weddings and similar events. Hikers and cyclists camp beneath the boughs in the summer season.
Over the centuries, man's impact on the immediate surroundings no longer can be ignored, as cable runs and telephone poles encircle the tree grove. Thus , as a photographer, one has to decide how to include these artefacts into the composition, because avoiding them is impossible and retouching later really makes a false impression of the scenery.
I have photographed these trees for more than 40 years and still am able to come up with new interpretations. So much for a scene being "done" in photographic terms. ...
This is an illustration to show a winter moonrise over the oaks.
-
Wow! Many beautiful photos i have found here! :)

The road to Hamningberg in Arctic Norway is one of the most photogenic ever seen. The geology is simply fantastic and the scenery is literally from another planet. In this case, I went off-road where the rocks were less acutely sharp and allowed passage on foot.

In the same district of Arctic Norway, there is a Memorial Museum for the tragic Witch Trials of the 16th Century that took place in the city of Vardø. The Museum is located on the same headland where the convicted 'witches' were burnt on a stake.

Here is the background that I was talking about and the barbarea vulgaris (i like the vulgaris part).
Initially I wanted to make this as a double exposure and show the vulgar part with the huge cable rolls that have been lying there for months, nicely stacked in front of the puddle. Usually I see seagulls playing around but never had the urgency to get off my bicycle. It must the combination of Df + 45P that got me taking photos this time :)
-
'Vulgaris' just means 'common'. Thus nothing vulgar about the epithet at all..
-
Thank you Bjørn, excuse my ignorance. I didn't know that it means "common" in Latin. I am so vulgar :)

OK, let me begin appreciating the photos!
One of great qualities that I have learned from over the years, that simplicity and scenes that look quite ordinary, if framed properly can make a great image, just like his waves :)
Pink of Armando is gentle and tender, just like flowers should be.
Harald's bird is so cute, probably my favorite of the lost.
Thomas' tree is nice just like John's statue. Amazed how you guys see these things

I suppose this also qualifies as monochrome
-
Joost, that's' beautiful. What is it?
-
"Joost, that's' beautiful. What is it?"
thank you. It is the (dried) outer skin of a red onion, put flat on a transparant board, and backlit by flash from the underside.
-
Nice! Composition works and I would have guessed some kind of insect wing. It proves that anything goes as a motiv.
-
Really nice, Joost.

It does, that great red stuff!

I had the same impression. It definitely works!

From today's shoot (D5300, AFS 28-300 Nikkor).

Landscape rarely gets more monochrome than winter. Ottawa's west end and former high-tech powerhouse. Newbridge Networks is down there. It really did look like this. I converted the NEF to JPG and left it at that.
-
Thank you Frank...with delay.
This one is goes from total white to total black with only greys in between. I guess it qualifies as well.

This is a very interesting thread. I'll have to look through my recent shots, but I don't think I have any monochromatic ones. However, I do have at least one monochromatic image from years ago.
Kodachrome 64, Canon A-1, Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror:
Here's another that's almost monochromatic. Also a Kodachrome 64 slide but a crop of a small portion of it. The Camera was a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens.
By the way, I duped the slides using a NEX 7 and a rig I cobbled together, which includes a Nikon 55mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor at its core.
I'll look to see if I have more.
-
Okay, I guess this is sort of a no-brainer. A shot of the (almost) full moon. I took this a few nights ago. It's a full RGB image. You can see a slight green fringing on the edge of the disk.

Morning frost fog at Dombås, Central South Norway. (D500, 105/1.4E Nikkor). Fog is the great colour equaliser ...
For scenes like this, one really just has to rely on the AF and hope for the best. The fog was so thick I couldn't hardly see any detail, except for an indication of the sun, with the naked eye.

From this year's Scottish NG Event:
Loch Ness through a bottle of Laphroaig
(Nikon Df, 28-85/3.5-4.5 AIS Zoom-Nikkor)
It will look so awesome on a large print. I didn't realize Laphroaig has more than one use. :D
-
Scotch whisky is the "water of life" and has many uses. Sometimes it is best to plan such uses before the level is getting too low in the bottle :D
Laphroaig itself is probably an acquired taste. It happens to be the favourite of the NG Team and as such an required addition to our meet-ups.
-
Very conventional camera; less so with the "filter" :D
I wonder whether the "filter" is an optical one or software. An orange optical filter will make the image jaggy because of severe reduction of the blue/green channel info.
-
I liked the way the image turned out. And I love my Laphroaig.
Frankly, Loch Ness as such was a little disappointing - one had to apply a very generous amount of imagination to consider this Loch anything else than a very ordinary glacially carved fjord lake, i.e. the kind of lakes we have in droves back home. In this endeavour, Laphroaig certainly extended a helping "hand" as it were.
-
Just a few months ahead, after the dreary winter has left again;
(D200 IR, Nikkor 105 mm f/2.5 AI)
-
The shot was taken from the non-opening window seat (right hand side in this case) of a Cessna 172 at about 3000' altitude. Probably needless to state to any viewers I have but direction of shot is critical. Directly into the sun is great, 90 deg away is just another shot. The small photo was taken on the same flight and breaks your thread rule but a) illustrates this perfectly and b) is my "front yard" :-)
That is a superb city scape in my book. Taken from a plane or from a drone???

-
The profile of this mountain (Falketind => Falcon's Peak) should be familiar enough to anyone visiting the Jotunheimen range of Central Southern Norway. It is very popular amongst mountaineers.
As the weather tends to change rapidly here due to the proximity of the Western Coast, I simply waited until the peak was nearly hidden by a developing storm before pressing the shutter. Nothing magical at all just the weather change.

Andrew, a really nice portrait. Tell us more about the concept.
This was at an Ohayocan event last year. The event is a place for people that like video games, Anime and animation in general and you basic Japanophiles to come together and share their passion and cosplay.
This particular person decided that he would dress as Jack Skellington from the animated movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Many people were wanting this persons picture and most were looking to get the traditional portrait. I decided to get something a little less traditional. I lucked out and met him in a glassed in area of the convention center, so lighting was handled for me by the environment.

Cormorant blues - not quite monochrome but I think it qualifies. John
very nice shot, reminds me to take more cormorant shots in my neighbourhood. We gave Swans, Ducks, several Gull varieties and Cormorants and Egrets here fishing in the Rhine River...
-
Thanks Frank. This is cormorant time for me, when they're fishing around the Locks that connect Seattle's lakes to the sea. Dozens roost in the park nearby, but they'll thin out as the herons gather to nest in the same trees in a few weeks. They're very skillful at fishing, so much so that they sometimes end up feeding marauding gulls as well.

We were going to photograph birds, so all I needed was a long lens, at least that's what I thought.
Just before departure I decided to put the light 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AF in my backpack.
Came in handy for this shot, and I have to say, the humble oldtimer continues to amaze me.

I decided to try out monochromes on the Olympus E-M1 III with a couple of twists. I used the setting for a software "red filter" (which I thought might use just the red pixels). The resulting JPGs were in color which surprised me, but mainly red with a little yellow. So I guess the other pixels weren't entirely neglected in JPG processing. At the same time I used an actual red (25A) filter on the lens, an Olympus 40-150 f/2.8, to try to emphasize the red pixels.
In raw processing I still had to desaturate, but it was off a nearly monochrome image produced by a monochrome setting. So, I'm going to post in this thread since the camera setting said "monochrome". ;)

Birna: This is stunningly beautiful...the image looks compressed and, since you mention a Sachtler tripod, I anticipate that the lens was a fairly long Nikkor, right?

I think there are several, so it might be a trip with 3 x2 days in a nearby hotel of them, I remember best Arcos and Vejer. Here are proposals from a website, which is written in many languages, so people who are interested might have a look in their preferred language.

Agreed. As we already went with Birna to Conil, this tiime I'm planning to go to Vejer and down to coast to Barbate with the pine forest, wind fields and...I digress. There are several. Going inside all the way to Ronda can be very interesting.

I wondered if it was going to be enough to be noticed in web size. For me, that red spot rounds the image and gives the key to understand it.
Thank you for stopping by and for introducing me to Corot! :)

Yes, I thought with all the springtime blooms right now, a little ominosity might not hurt... ;) :)
