Unfortunately, or perhaps the opposite, even IR photography cannot convey the smell :D

No worries.  I can easily compensate for the lack of the smell with my own experience.   ;)  (Except for surströmming!   :o :o :o )

Another view of my local lake, showing an incident of severe cold resulting in a wonderful display of ice crystal on the frozen surface.

This lake is conveniently located just a few hundred meters away from my living quarters. I'm over at the woods on the right hand side of the picture.
