Post by: Birna Rørslett on March 01, 2023, 08:51:47
Post your "blog" contributions here  No theme (other than what the passage of time creates), no contest implied, a maximum of one picture per day in the actual month for NG Supporters and no more than 8 images per month for NG members.  Enjoy!

Those are some of my students. We were celebrating "Andalucia´s day" at school and had some time on our hands. The image layout and theme was proposed by them, I just choose the spot.

Swedish ski tourists waiting for their return train back to Gothenburg.

Nikon Z5, Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 SE Z, IR 72 filter. This tiny lens is quite good in IR. A weak hot spot can be seen on occasion, but using a lens hood (not following the lens, by the way -- Nikon takes a penny-pinching attitude to this low-end lens?) ought to help. Not bothersome for this capture anyway.

Yesterday I purchased a Z30 with the Nikkor 28/2.8 SE Z (retro design). The reason for the 28 SE was to have an alternative wide lens for IR, the usefulness of which was confirmed, and for the Z30? A host for the Rodenstocks of course. I'm getting tired of cleaning the scratched sensor of my Z9, Z6, etc. when experimenting with the adaptations of these 50/0.75 speed monsters. A cheap Z30 would ease my mind and for a bargain price, not putting too much pressure on my wallet as well :)

My Mk.2 version of the Rodenstock adapter fits even the Z30 -- the fit is pretty tight though as the new version of the adapter is seated close to the camera body.  Using the 1:1 format (16x16mm) on the Z30 makes for an image without any dark or very smeared corners. Infinity focus is feasible too.

Not so much users and/or love for the versatile Z 24-200mm here on NG it seems. I like this lens, for my photography it's very much ok.

Here's an image shot at 200mm which is supposed to be the weakest performing focal length.

I very much like the 24/70mm if this compares, it should be a useful range for travel, walking around and such. What is your intended use?

The Z30 appears mighty to be able to handle such invention. Always looking forward for the images you create with your tinkering investigations

Nice work Birna.

I wonder if you should add an NC controlled lathe and a mill-drill to your shopping list and a 3-D printer to keep them company?  ;D

I reckon that you would really love such weaponry when you are making your adapters and the like.

Nothing compares to the "excitement" of a hand-held Dremel :)

Whilst the Z30 indeed works well with the Rodenstock, it is a consumer camera and has 1/4000 sec fastest shutter speed. Meaning it is virtually impossible to use the combination in broad daylight !!! The lowest ISO setting is 100 and that is just too much. Even the Z9 can max out its 1/32000 sec top speed unless I drop the ISO setting to Low 2 meaning roughly ISO 32 equivalent.

Sadly my hands are now too unsteady to do justice to my Dremels.  I have certainly seen Dremels attached to the cross slides of lathes with great success for fine drilling and grinding.

Ruth keeps an angel hanging above our dining table to remind there are immaterial sides to life. I use it for my Z30 with the Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75. Each to their own, I guess.

This time I used the entire (DX) frame of the Z30. Early morning light thus I just managed to keep exposure without exceeding the max. 1/4000 speed of the Z30 :) I now have added filter threads to the lens so as to use a polariser or neutral filter in daylight to keep exposures "safe". Weird.

I'm slowly coming to grips with the Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75 on the tiny Nikon Z30. The key is thinking *simplicity*, not *speed* or *bokeh*. The latter follows on its own anyway.

It may well be. As per the edit challenge, I was at lost about how to process the scene. I have made quite a few versions from the same day, different files. I was struck by the original view, a reminder of illustrations of future and alien constructions in classical science fiction comics. Here I tried to keep it as close to the original as possible: deep blacks, high contrast with the reflections on the metal at around 13:00 hours in south Spain. Color also very close to the original.

   Thanks for commenting

Oslo, down town in the older areas.

Nikon Z5, Viltrrox 23mm f/1.4, IR. This lens does quite well in IR and a weak hot spot only develop when the lens is stopped fully down. So eminently useable despite the reduced file size as the 23mm is a DX lens and Z5 an FX model.

There are many prehistoric sites here, burial mounds etc
The scenery and lighting were stunning on the day I visited, with many sets of thick clouds moving quickly to reveal bright sunshine & blue skies, then repeat.

Still a long way from spring, here is one of my latest aurora captures i Fairbanks. I added some contrast and saturation, but WB was kept at my standard manual daylight for astro captures, so no artificial color cast was added.

Breathtaking.  The faint red part of the aurora makes it special to me.

Thanks Akira, the reds are certainly much sought after, often present if aurora occurs at lower latitudes, but not that frequent at higher latitudes.  It is often best to try for the weaker auroras then where the greens do not overwhelm other colors. But the eye is not very sensitive to these red wavelength at low light intensities; it will look very gray. So one will use the camera as ones eye to explore.

Kind of, I think.

The magnolias in John's image looks more like those I saw in New Orleans.  According to Wiki, the scientific name of the ones commonly seen in Japan is Magnolia liliiflora.

I concur. Some old lenses really encounter a new spring with modern cameras like the D850 or Z9. Their lower contrast can easily be rectified in post processing as the fine details have been captured by today's high-resolving sensors.

The main culprit might be axial colour aberration which sometimes can be quite pesky to get rid of or reduce to acceptable levels. Thus it is beneficial that the lens has low levels of such aberrations in the first place. This is where the old ED non-IF designs can shine again.

To add to the previous post, even the much maligned Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75 can deliver excellent results if properly handled. Here it is on the Z30. I had problems with overexposure despite the light levels weren't bright as the shutter speed of the Z30 maxes out at 1/4000sec. Tomorrow I'll pick up a ND16X (=4 stops) filter for the Rodenstock to help overcome such "issues" :) The Z9 is easier as it goes all the way to 1/32000 sec plus can be set to low ISO equivalent of 32.

This is the entire frame (1:1 format) on the Z30 and the depth of field at a distance of approx. 6m is vanishingly thin.

The use of a long lens created a special 'look' much favoured for a time. One might say it was 'fashionable'.

I had this lens as a loaner from the national Nikon dealer in the '70s and it was hard to get as production ws low and the lens much in demand. Plus at that time, as a budding scientist, I couldn't afford it :( Thuds reluctantly I had to let it go. Many years later I acquired a very nice sample of the Ai'd K-type.

That looks very promising, Akira!! I would have tweaked the image a bit further to make it more "IR-like" in contrast etc., but that's just me.

The old Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 is utterly reliable and well worth many times its current low asking price on the second-hand market :)

Action-shooting with the massive Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75 on the tiny Z30 is a lot of fun -- sort of. The lens is glacially slow in its manual focusing as the focusing threads have a fine pitch, thus unless you have pre-focused to the approximate distance one is apt to miss the action.

I continue to be amazed of the optical performance of this 50+ year old design at an effective f/0.75. Since the shutter speed of the Z30 maxes out at 1/4000sec, I now use an ND8X filter on the lens for daylight use. This just barely makes the shutter speeds to fall in the available range :)

Using an ND8X filter is absolutely necessary even though there was no sunshine this morning ... f/0.75 is *fast* and without the dense ND filter, the top 1/4000sec of the Z30  is way too slow (!) to prevent massive overexposure even on this dull day. A new world of experiences for sure. The lens itself continues to endear itself  by the nicely rounded yet sharp rendition of distant motifs.

That learns it was very popular at that time.  Was the 300/4.5 ED non-if also in strong demand in those days ?

If that was the case, I missed it. Only remember the 300 didn't have an IR focusing dot unlike other Nikkors.

As the Rodenstock TV-Heligon is an 'X-ray' (sic) lens (it's not of course, only used for recording the X-ray output), it should be able to see straight through persons? Tested on one of my transgender friends and perhaps there is a grain of truth here as well? In a twisted manner, though :)

Rare Scanner lenses from the Israelian Company Scitex which made high quality scanners.

They come in three: The Rodenstock Scitex 67mm f/4.9,  89mm f/5.0, and 110mm f/5.0.  Based on the serial number they were manufactured in 1993.
On the Z's they all go to infinity. On the F mount the 89mm and the 110 will reach infinity. 39mm  mouth.  The first impression, extremely sharp and detailed, with no traces of loca. I can open a separate topic..

The 105 MC is doing good service for you again, Fons :)

I just completed my modification of the iShoot ZMC105 tripod collar for the 105 MC so it can rotate +-90 degrees off horizontal. This works with all my Z cameras except for the Z9, because the protruding battery compartment lip on the latter prevents the collar to fit. If the rumours of the upcoming Z8 are to be trusted (sic!), that model would allow the tripod collar for the 105.  If Z8 has 60+ MPix too that would be perfect for the Rodenstock TV-Heligon. We'll see in due time what Nikon releases for us.

It's surprisingly easy. Just use a Dremel and cut out a grove on the inside. A 15min. job plus some extra sanding to smooth out the grove afterwards. My job is of course nothing compared to what Erik would have achieved, but it works!! The ugliness of the modification is hidden on the inside .... and I just let the collar sit permanently on the 105MC.

Resistance is futile :) At my dealer's, I just lifted the featherweight 400 and rattled off a few shots at 1/10sec  -- all were amazingly sharp. A no-brainer. Managed to push the price as well.

I probably would not attempt it because it's not clear where goes the grove and what the grove does. I imagine it allows you to turn the lens. I will admire y ours, but probably continue to reorient my L-Bracket. LOL. Thank You.

I took this image of a spectrum from a prism on this sunny day. It reminded me that despite what we do to Earth, the light from the Sun, as shown by the spectrum, is pristine.

Yes, the lens can be turned at will with the modified collar in place. The original concept did keep the sliders for A/M and the focus delimiter visible, hence you couldn't twist the lens + camera off the landscape orientation. Set the sliders at the beginning of the shoot and there is no problem. In fact, I could probably lock these sliders with epoxy glue, like I've done on other lenses such as the AFS 200/2.

Nice idea - kudos Birna.

Having now seen what is required, it is a shame that the manufacturer did not already have these grooves included in the collar - not a very hard or costly machining operation with todays NC equipment.

Edit:  An even bigger shame that Nikon did not design a mount for the lens in the first place!

Oh well...

My thoughts exactly -- initially. However, they might already have realised that the Z9, not official at that time the 105MC was designed, would conflict due to its shape. As the Z9 is hefty and robust, adding the lightweight 105MC reduces the necessity of a lens tripod collar *for that combination only*. Nikon should instead have delivered something like the iShoot device, but made it rotating in both directions. Due to the protruding camera grip of many modern Nikons only one direction would be feasible for switching from landscape to portrait mode with the 105MC. On the Z fc, either direction is attainable.

The other approach could have been along the lines of the changes from the first to the current version of the FTZ adapter, with a lens mount to suit the Z9.

Magnolia stellata (?) in a public garden in Lille. Z6ii, Novoflex adapter, Canon FD macro 100/4 @5.6. No correction in PP, but +2/3 EV.
That second-hand macro lens joined my inventary around 2007. The lens formula is rather simple, inspired from a Cooke triplet (see https://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/fdmacro/100macro.htm (https://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/fdmacro/100macro.htm). It has a good reputation for being a capable allrounder, also suitable for distant shots, and delivering good bokeh (by the way, the background is essentially composed of other flowers from the same tree). I used it a lot, much more than the 85/1.8, and somewhat more than the "specialized" 135/2.

The magnolia flowers appear to feel a bit cold in the atmosphere of Lille.

The Canon FD Macro seems to share the same optical formula of a Heliar type.  I realized that it has a unique mechanism to switch the rotation of the focus ring between heavy and light.  It would require more complicated internal mechanism but is smarter than the locking screw of Nikkor siblings.

A picture of my love; probably not the most extraordinary picture, with its restless background. But, for now, it’s the picture which is dear to my heart.

The casuality is a strong point with the unusual pose.

Lille, yesterday. Z6ii, 24-120S at 27.5mm and f/8. Some raising of the shadows in PP (using NX Studio). The sky is "real" (even though it evokes the effects of blown highlight recovery). What you do not see is the demonstration on the right, that's what some people are watching and photographing. The 24/120 is quite adequate for that purpose; the 24-200 probably even more so.

Thank you John. Used a borrowed D3 while walking the dog that a colleague is selling to see if I had any interest. I do not own any FX lenses so I used the 17-55 DX lens which of course is not ideal. A bit of vignetting at 30mm. Anyway, I will probably just stick with my D2Hs.

Akira,

There were three of these youngsters in a pen by the side of the road I was driving on, and I found them charming. I learned a young donkey is called either a foal or a filly just like a horse. I was hoping for something more unique and appealingly donkeyish when I looked it up, but once again the poor donkey gets the short end of the stick, this time with hand me down names. They deserve better, don't you think?

Looking out the window this morning reminds me why I'm now counting the days until I meet up with Paco in sunny Andalusia :) Snowfall has commenced again for the nth time this spring. Spain is just 6 days ahead !!

I'm also testing how to create panoramas with the Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50/0.75. Here is a first try, 17 frames on the hand-held Z30 in early morning light. So early in fact I didn't have to use the ND8X filter as exposures were within the permissible range of the Z30! There are a few stitching errors and other irregularities I just let slide by as this was more a proof of concept than production work. I hope to refine my approach later when using Paco's Sachtler tripod. Ruth doesn't like spiked tripods on her wooden floors.

In a split-second accident, Birna very nearly lost her left thumb today. Not good -- not at all. The gush went to the bone, literally. The surgeon of the Emergency Ward fixed it -- or at least I hope so. I'm left-handed :(

It suddenly became uncertain whether I can bring, not to speak of lift up, my Z9, on the forthcoming visit to Paco in Spain. Leaving in a few days. I probably have to rethink the photo challenges for my meet-up with him and might have to drop the Z9 and swap to lighter gear. We'll see over the weekend what mess that remains after the anaesthetic and painkillers have done their duty. The stitches, and more painkillers, will accompany me on the trip.

At least the Z30 + 28SE in my purse allowed for a few documentary snaps. For once having a lightweight camera with AF was beneficial. I also quick-tested whether the Z30 could fly on its own and survive the inevitable crash onto flagstones. It survived as the image below bears witness to. So did the lens but the HN-2 hood acquired some extra dings and scratches.

Birna, hope it will heal soon and it is not only a trick to smuggle surgical silk into the EU  :)
It is to be expected that nerves need a while to get back to work, so think about a head mounted GoPro and make a trip dokumentation in your style
Wish you a fast and full recovery

Oh, no, that's really painful, Birna.  Hope your right hand will get better soon...  (The image apparently shot with a phone seems to makes it left-right reversed, which confused me at first.)

Ouch! I hope that everything will be well. Rest, heal and let the Andalusian sunlight do you a power of good.

Get well soon, was the bad winter weather the reason for the mishap?

Ouch, Birna!  Hope you heal quickly.  At least cameras are made with right-side controls for the most part.

May your recovery be both fast and complete with no long term side effects.  Bad that it was your dominant hand.

Birna, I'm sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you have a speedy recovery! I can definitely relate - I also had a close call with a power tool this weekend and ended up needing 5 stitches on my left pinky finger. It's not a pleasant experience, but thankfully everything seems to be healing well and functioning properly.
