Kind of, I think.

The magnolias in John's image looks more like those I saw in New Orleans.  According to Wiki, the scientific name of the ones commonly seen in Japan is Magnolia liliiflora.

The early Magnolia stellate (white) and the Magnolia x soulangeana are mainly common here.  I think the Magnolia button on my photo is the last one.
