A saying that epitomises the Norwegian spirit, and culture, is 'ut på tur, aldri sur'. This is nearly impossible to translate and yet keep the intended meaning, which might be something like 'a trip is good for your mood'.
Anyway, the kids learn the essentials already at an early age in the kindergarten, as shown in the snapshot below. Also illustrates another equally ubiquitous Norwegian adage: 'det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær'. Literally 'there no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing'. Obviously another practical lesson for the small ones :)

My home town, Sapporo, Hokkaido, is not as cold as in your area in the winter, but I am emotionally touched to the season of winter and snow. Love the scene!

The uncomplicated array of furniture, accentuated by a lone figure and the great lighting that keeps the attention gently focused in the frame. I love it!

Thank you, Ian. When I saw the scene, it was a "gotcha" moment.
The timing you captured was perfect and fitting for NG!

I like the fresh colors and snow Birna - here it's also getting colder and first snow can be seen on the surrounding mountains

Ordinarily this would be a typical 'photo club' cliché using carefully arranged autumn foliage .... however, we had a heavy snowfall that morning followed by strong winds thus the deciduous trees all shed their foliage at once. It was just a matter of traipsing around to find pleasing juxtapositions of snow and leaves. I have a handful of such shots, but selected this one for NG.
By the way, the dark blotches on the leaves are infestations by the parasitic fungus Rhytisma acerinum. The spots now are irregular in shape and lighter in colours than in the first stages of infection, which means the ascii (sporangia) have shed their spores already, ready to infect new host trees. The cycle of life spins again.

To celebrate that the site is up again and I am finally able to log in (password resets emails ended up in spam folder), here is my very first attempt and edit at Jupiter this season with the moons Europa and Io in a single video stack.
(Nikon 300mm f/4 PF with stacked TC-14E+TC-20E III on ZWO ASI678 astrocam, Stack of the 10% best of 60000 frames, 3x drizzle, resized down slightly) Jupiter is close to opposition these days and appears very large!
Edit: replaced with a less noisy version based on 20% of the frames and better alignment on Europa and Io.
-
Akira and John, thank you for the kind words.

The chemists pretty much stole the show during the science centre's open day. Here they are demonstrating the Meissner Effect. This is the expulsion of a magnetic field from a superconductor that has been cooled enough to enter the superconducting state.

Øivind, I'm enjoying your ever being improved images of stars and planets. This Jupiter image accompanied by the major satellites is impressive!
-
I totally concur with Akira. And 60.000 frames… waow …
-
Thanks Akira and Bruno, I was very pleased to find that I could resolve details in Jupiter with the moons showing in a single take. Previously I had to combine different exposures for the same. Getting weather to cooperate at the time when the Great Red Spot is showing and Jupiter is in accessible position is also a bit of a challenge this season. Transparency was below average, but sometimes it seems that seeing is more acceptable during those occasions. I have more captures to process...
BTW, love your physics experiments, Bruno. Could you point us to where in the frame that the expulsed magnetic field is visualized?
Akira, it looks like somewhat limited transparency in your capture enhanced the display of the prominent stars by diffusing them a little.

Look in the polystyrene cup. There is a small white object floating above a black base. A 35mm lens was not ideal; the modern 105mm Micro-Nikkor is making its way onto my wish list.

Thank you Ian

Thanks Ian, yes I see it now - like in the Avatar movie ;D

Thank you for the details. How long did it take to stack 60000 frames in your computer? That's beyond my thought!
The Orion image was heavily manipulated with the contrast, black, highlight, clarity and dehaze sliders in the Photoshop PP. The stars are diffused with the filter mentioned in my original post. It makes the difference of the colors of each star more clearly. I'm trying to capture the starry sky as landscape images rather than the astrophotography.
Kenko recently offered a combined light pollution eliminating / light diffusing filter. The reduction of the light pollution with the filter may make the post-process a bit easier.
-
For a batch of 4 different percentages of best frames it can take hours to stack a single Jupiter take of that length (maximum of about 3 minutes length to avoid rotation blur), depending on how large the imaging area has been set. I can just start it before going to sleep or let it work in the background while doing other things. BTW I replaced it with another stack of the same take with less noise and better alignment on the moons.
-
Thank you, again, for the details. That it took hours is not really surprising. I'm looking for more to come!
-
My museum work begins to show ... here is a part of what I have done the last months. Each herbarium box contains up to 200 collection sheets of pressed material, and each sheet therein has to be checked and verified.

The Nikon Z fc now has a bigger sibling, the Z f. In this photo, the latter seems even taller, however that impression is mostly due to it being fitted with an L-bracket which the Z fc lacks.
I 'recycled' a Markins L-bracket (designed for the Z6/7) to fit the Z f, as the new Foolography Unleashed 22'M device needs some additional protection on the left hand side of the camera.

I 'recycled' a Markins L-bracket (designed for the Z6/7) to fit the Z f, as the new Foolography Unleashed 22'M device needs some additional protection on the left hand side of the camera.
Sisters in Arms
How did you adapt the 2.2/28 to the Zf? There is no FTZ there
-
It's the native Z version, Frank :) That is, Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 SE Z. Not provided with the "S-Line" stamp by Nikon, but a nice performer anyway. I got it mainly for IR, which it can do passably, but these days it is often used on the Z f as well. If you are curious about the bigger lens on the Z fc, that is the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 65mm f/2, also in native Z mount.
The FTZ often upsets the handling of an F lens badly because the placement of lens collars and weight distribution are all wrong -- at least for my hands. On the heavy and bulky Z9 the adapted lens fares a bit better though, but not on the small Z models. Thus I have added more lenses in native Z mount than I initially had planned.

The Rayqual adapter is much more svelte. However, there is no escaping the feeling that the lens is too far forward. It is the price to pay for using F-mount lenses on a Z-mount camera.

Well, it was bound to happen. I disagree ;D I love the files from the Z6, detailed, flexible in post and very good size/quality ratio. For me, of course. Now much better with af than at launch. Can be silent. Z mount. What's not to like?

Ambient temperatures have crept above zero for the first time in many weeks. So instead of freezing snow we have ice-cold rain and strong winds. Not sure the change is for the better, though.
Nikon Zf with the über-wide Laowa 9mm f/5.6. This is not an easy lens to utilise on a full-frame camera.

Brussels, today 22/11. Judy Blue Eyes.
This is my first shot with the Nokton 50/1.0 on the Zf. Wide open, which you may have guessed. That lens is pretty sharp wide open but above all very contrasty, reminding the Noct. The blacks are quite black already, when in focus of course. At 1.4, sharpness increases significantly and color saturation rises a bit. Rendering reminds Summilux R 50/1.4. Vignetting is strong: "clipped corners" (see also 50/1.2 AIS), so cropping to 4:3 would be a reasonable way to handle it uniformly. Low barrel distortion. Low focus breathing. Focus plane is not flat, the corners are bent towards the rear (much less at short focusing distances, apparently). CA not worth mentioning, LoCA is there but not outrageous, same with coma as far as I could check (at daytime).
Physically it is a massive lens with reasonable dimensions (62mm filters), and shorter than most Z lenses. No plastic parts. The focus ring action is perfect. The aperture ring is in the front, à la Zuiko, and provides 1/3 stop clicks. Metal shade was fortunately provided in the box (beware of not losing it: expensive replacement).
-
The lens piqued my interest so I'm curious to learn more about it. I've seen photos and the design externally follows that of my Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 65mm f/2, which is a superb performer. I wouldn't expect the same level of performance from any f/1 lens of course.

It's a pity, the AF of the AF-S stopped working. It already had some problems, but re-attaching the lens to the camera usually helped. Looks like a loose contact somewhere.

Daniel never missed so many shots with a camera like today, wrong setup, so there
is a learning curve!
You really need to use the grip that came with the Zf, personally i find the af-on button rather too small!
The camera itself feels heavy in the hand!
After the 'negative is out of the way' time to enjoy this wellbuilt camera!
Best used with a choice of excellent lenses!
