Apparently Jony Ive isn't involved anymore in the product designs including the latest MacBooks:

This $300 "Designed by Apple" photo book should be seen as a testament of the former head of design:

An unboxing and hookup vid of the new 5K screen, looks like a very nice and clean setup with the new MBP.

And the need to attach just one cable for the screen and power is very cool  :)

Yeah, it's a quite nice setup. It worries me a bit that they have dropped out of the display business and now also the router and time machine business.

Can you elaborate please, as it's still supported by Sierra

It is Time Capsule which is (probably) being discontinued.  This is a wireless router with a hard drive attached.  I had one once, and it was good, but when it ran out of hard drive space I did not replace it with another.  I use a router from my ISP and a separate hard drive for my time machine backups.

Apple appears to be getting out of the router business, so it is logical that Time Capsule would be dropped (although it is still on sale in the Apple UK store).

Here is an article explaining a little more.  http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-airport-time-capsule-routers-discontinued-2016-11?r=US&IR=T

I expect that this is a sensible business decision with no wider implications.

Thanks Anthony.
I still have my time capsule working, it's now 10 years old, but have changed drives inside often, thought.

It worries me a bit that they have dropped out of the display business and now also the router and time machine business.
The Cinema displays and TimeCapsule were invented in a time without very little competition, now others have better solutions at lower prices so Apple lost its differentiator to justify their premium products for premium prices strategy. I remember the first time I saw the 30" Cinema display more than a decade ago, I was simply stunned that one could edit images at full resolution with leftover space for the menus. Now every vendor has these big screens for a lot less money.

TimeCapsule was invented in an era when Internet providers only provided a modem and one had to by their own wifi router, now the wifi routers with builtin modem comes standard with an Internet subscription. Also a TimeMachine compatible NAS is now a much better and resilient storage solution for a little more money.

For the same reasons other companies like IBM and Sony decided to sell their entire laptop devisions, Samsung who pushed these brands out of the business will undergo the same faith soon as well. In a few years we'll only have Apple MacOS and Lenovo Windows laptops.
Cheers,
Jan Anne
