I'm surprised as well. This was wide-open at f/2.8. The frame is trimmed on either side, as you surmised.

Do note this is the AFS, not AF D, version. Paco had the latter and it behaved differently.

I see, yours is the very last "80"-200 version with the SW motor.

Optically the AF-S  is a great lens. Better than the previous versions. And according to some reviews sharper than the  later 70-200 VRI and VRII

The 70-200 zooms may have sacrificed the optical performance for the VR functions.

In preparation for a future shoot-out Zf vs. Df, I dug out one of the Df bodies, put in an SD card, and went for a walk in the nearby forrests. The Df makes pictures all on its own -- how nice is that?

Nikon D90 + AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D
On further examination, I think that this might actually be D. grandiflora rather than D. iridioides, although to be honest I'm a little confused now. :)
