1/May/16: from a long series of flower shots to check out detail rendering and color consistency of the D500 with 1.4/24mm.
First ist developed from a Standard Style JPEG
Second and Third come via calibrated Photo Ninja and Photoshop
Verdict: I get better tonality and fine details from the RAW. The files handle differently from the ones I am used to (D3, X100T, D600) ... I have to get acquainted to their qualities

This lens is indeed a little gem ! Although I don't get infinity with it (you might get it if you stop down) I love it ! :)
Very sharp !
Tinier than its Russian copy, it haven't the preset ring, tough.
I will bring both to Scotland, so, you can try them. ;)

2. Mai 2016. Testing very low light levels, like 1.4/30th@20.000ISO, with the D500. I could neither focus by hand, not see colors with my bare eyes at that light level. The D500 focusses and delivers very nice color.

Great colors John. And you have this Angenieux ... I always wanted to try it. What do you think of it?
-
Thanks Anirban and Bruno
The Angenieux 35-70/2.5-3.3 is a marvellous lens, in colours, light and bokeh unique. Has some drawbacks (but easily corrected in PP) and takes a bit of time to master it. And some luck to find a good sample in the Nikon-mouth.
An example here, with hardly any daylight.
-
That's what I heard about it indeed. Your pictures demonstrate its quality and your mastering of it.

Ta, John !
By the way, I told you something wrong about the Zeiss biotar : It has actually a preset aperture ring ! Both aperture ring and preset ring are so thin and so close each others that I thought they were the same ring... ::)
Contrary to the Nikkors, its aperture ring is on the front lens and the focus ring at the rear lens. (see below).
-
Yes, Francis. The same system also applies for the Zeiss Triotar 135/4 The Nikkor 28/4 PC has the same set up, with aperture and pre-aperture-selection at the front of the lens, by the way.

Thanks! John. It must be a dead slow worm. They are common in the area and it is not rare to find them dead and flat - they are hard to see and slow so people tend to step on them.
Those tulips you found have a special deep red color.

This morning I somehow looked back at material things, possessions that have guided me for these past few years. (I also made breakfast). One of the reasons to remenisce on such topics is that I am about to move once more.
In my mind the list grew shorter and shorter as the years accumulated. In the end there were two items that really stood out. A frying pan and a Nikon FM2, both came into my possession used in 1996. Both are still there, even if the Nikon FM2 now belongs to Kristina, my girlfriend. Both have some brassing to show for it.

-
So do i still like the afd 80-200/2.8, Buddy, nice round touch.
The AF-D 80-200 f2,8 most certainly is a nice lens. Even at T*3,4 it renders very pleasing OoF backgrounds, has pretty decent sharpness even wide open. I often wish the actual light transmission of the lens was closer to f3 then f3,5 but even the way it is the lens is more then usable for a PJ approach to things and when maximizing effect it can hold it's own against the newer f2,8 zooms in most cases.
I might replace it with a Sigma 120-300 f2,8 in the future and I might regret that decision. Still, the need for speed is calling
-
I have the non-D version of the 80-200/2.8, which should be optically the same as the D. It's a bit large to walk-around for PJ approach. I usually take the 105/1.8 or the 85/1.8 K instead. For longer reach the AF 180/2.8 is far more better than the zoom.
-
These planes are huge
Edit: Even on the wrong side :) Can't edit it on the phone.
-
Yesterday - May 8. Like Bruno I went for white flowers .. a lot of them. My neighbours Magnolia tree.

It should indeed be optically identical, including the ED element. My girlfriend uses the 180mm f2,8 AF-D a lot and it is indeed worlds better then the 80-200. The 80-200 balances well on my D3 where the 180 f2,8 feels a bit small. I would like to buy an 80-200 f4 as walk around tele for the D3 but I am not certain how much use it will see with the 105 f2,5, 135 f2,8 and 85 f1,4 also in my bag. Lot's of duplicates there, and the main reason the zoom is still here is because of the flexibility it adds
-
Yes, I understand completely ;) Zooms have their own quality. The 80-200/4.5 C is my preferred one at the moment for longer reach as it has a special 'vintage' look, a bit hard to explain why.
-
I do know what you mean. The 135mm f3,5 Nikkor-Q.C gives me the same. The 5cm f2 Nikkor-S is also good at looking "vintage" at close distance. From what others have shown me the 5,8cm f1,4 is the king of vintage under the F mount Nikkors. Would love to play around with a copy of that lens at some point. Not sure if I would like it's rendering enough to give it a permanent place in my bag
-
Thanks for explaining. Hadn't heard about the 5.8/1.4 but have an old 50/1.4, but pretty useless for street photography wide open, especially against the sun ;)
Another daily Photo with a special lens: Not really vintage, more French cinema-style, sharpness combined with softness, great colour rendering and light-transmission, ability with close focus and gorgeous bokeh; and that is perhaps why I like the Angelieux 35-70/2.5 so much

Yes, Fons, especially the Angenieux 35-70mm 2.5-3.3. Built according to Leitz specs, but Leitz decided to collaborate with Minolta, so Angenieux released it under the own name. A very remarkable zoom, in many ways.

This is the very first SLR I bought. I bought the MD-12 later and when I bought the camera it came with a 50mm f2 Ai. The 55mm f3,5 was added later as well.Purchased new in 1978 at Foto Daniels in Maastricht. They took it back from the original owner in 1995, CLA'd the camera after which I bought it. The Foto Daniels sticker is still on the inside of the the film door.

Thanks, Thomas. Actually, it was for a hamburger :). I leave the GPS info on by default on the smartphone as I use it a lot to document biodiversity. I thought in this case the only harm that could happen is drive people to this cool place where a group of young people have started an innovative good quality hamburger restaurant.

Fons - great shot. What caught my attention is the layers as you say and especially the tree/power pole.
These are from yesterday evening - may 20. I was trying to grab some shots of the skies while the sun was going down but my AF refused to lock on the sky so I tried manual ... not a success though.
I continued to try and figure out why the AF refused to lock and found an area with more contrast ... and suddenly I realised the air was filled with tiny flies hovering and enjoying the sun going down just like me .. lesson learned :D

Yes Frank, that is my girlfriend. As far as models go, we will bring one of our 2 dogs. We can leave one of them at home for the day, but we have to bring the younger of the two. As far as I know Maastricht that should not prove to be a problem though.

Frank, I'm so terribly sorry for mixing you and Bruno up. I scrolled back and was already quite certain I addressed the right person.
The Orchids & Mannequin shot was quite a spontanious shot. I was making dinner, had a quick glimpse at the aquarium and the orchid was right beside it with quite nice and soft available light coming in through a window. I positioned the mannequin who normally makes sure our CD's do not fall down from the stereo and went to pick up my camera. Made about 10 exposures but this was the 3rd one and came out best.
I always liked my 24mm on my D300 but hardly ever use it on the D3. I seem to prefer the 20mm UD Nikkor on the D3. Not yet quite certain why that is. Which 85mm f1,8 will you bring? The AF-S version or the Nikkor-H?

Today, May 28. - a nice sunny day with a blue sky and drifting clouds.
I went out to catch some bright yellow Rape fields on a location I've photographed often. It has a small forest on a slope/hill and I was hoping for bright yellow Rape field, lush green forest and a blue sky with drifting clouds.. but as I suspected I was too late and the Rape flowers was almost gone.
A few other impressions from the country side - an old parsonage, a big old chestnut tree and the view over the country side.

It is soon time for peonies and for some of the red colored species I've always struggled to get a result that comes close to what I see - no real success yet. Probably lack of post processing skills for my part, but it seems rather tricky.
I photographed some wild orchids recently and they also have a tricky colour - maybe I should get a better colour reference card to at least have a more precise reference.

Thanks Lars. There is a whole story behind the Beehive. The beekeeper got it as a present from a retired beekeeper, he had worked for the railway-company, and apparently it was built from old rail- wood. I think they are now working on the restoration of it. Below a pic when he got the beehive.

Orchids remind me of insects. Very great shot. Are the colors
realistic or doctored?

Impressive Buddy and Lars.

John, lovely capture.
These smoke generators,- do you have a more detailed shot perhaps?
As a small boy I found them faszinating, there were some who had a spring driven fan in them.
Think about disassembling an old fashioned alarm clock and the seeing something more... useful 8)
Do these use bellows to blow the smoke at the bees?
Thanks Thomas. I will ask the Beekeeper, I see him on a short notice. And ask for a photo :) I know he has a lot of stuff. Unfortunately I have no more details than the shot I just posted.
This is the beekeeper by the way.

Thanks Frank. The colours are pretty realistic - I've only adjusted levels and contrast. The flowers of this species does resemble big insects with long legs .. as you probably know, several orchids mimic insects in their flowers to attract males of certain species that are hoping for some "romance" ;)
About your wine and coffee shot from yesterday .. is the coffe served in a cup from Utrecht or am I missing the point?
Impressive Buddy and Lars.
Thanks John .. really nice portrait of the bee keeper with raindrops etc. !

Thank you Frank. I happen to know a few very nice and not well known corners of Northrhine Westfalia where you just have to wait for the right light and press the shutter. Natures magic does most of the rest ;)

yesterday's green and purple (29-May-2016)
-
Rododendrons. May 30. Enough to choose from.
Akira - lovely blue hydrangeas. Nice detail with the BIF!
Fons and John - those shots makes me enjoy the sunny and warm weather we are having even more! ;)
Frank - I like those soft green-yellowish colour transitions - and the tropical mood of second shot.
-
Lars the first of the three is so soft and translucent
-
deep green of the day

Lovely #2, Lars, lighting darkness.
I like how the noise contribute to the structure of the inflorescence, Frank

Frank, Deep green really does it for me. As mentioned before, the noise does not distract but rather add to th eoveral image. And green is my favorite color ;)
Today I played around with post processing a bit, not really sure where to go with this image

Nice flowers Lars, I like the first one particularly.
For me is the noise in the green distracting, Frank. I like yesterday's purple-red more.
Cool reflection and colours, Bruno.
Great atmosphere Buddy, I first thought it was a street in Havana. You yellowed it a bit?

Buddy, you may disagree and I would not mind,
but I think while the PP trend is good and it almost works, maybe a bit more Buena Vista colors, think clearer blue hues, and shadows, which could fall in some more blackness?
It tends to follow the airy light and fine graduated tones of your nature shots, while I see this city could needs a touch of harshness.
Pleasant shot and framing beside that to present a nice car and the mood of the scene.

Today for me was hiking in the Lake District with friends :)

Nice blue colours. They are very early, here all is still in the button-phase. Warmer climate in Tokyo?

Alice and Mark, not pictured here and unknown to you, but still happy to oblige ;)

Thanks, John. Yes, I was attracted their nice rich blue. In Tokyo, it was very hot (not warm!) during the daytime. Actually since the end of April, there has been nothing to post to "In search of spring" thread anymore.
-
Ah thank you. That explains the full blooming hydrangeas. This blue is very soft indeed. The colours tend to be harsher here.

More then just a bit and more then just yellowing John. I made a lightroom preset that gives me a rough baseline in this direction. Sometimes I like to move away from color correction and instead try to process towards a certain painterly style or the look of old faded photographs.

Thomas, I will give that and a few other things a try. You just gave me the nudge that pointed me in a direction I could take with this photo, and one that I had not thought of yet.
Maybe I'm stuck in a routine again, because you aptly compare to my other photos where this certainly deserves a different approach.
Critisism is always welcome. I think change is the driving force for growth and growth is the direction for photography in my opinion. Never stop learning, always strive to improve, learn, try, fail and start over :)
-
I agree, Buddy. Continuous improvement never stops.
It's also refreshing (and a break in routine) trying and using other post-processing tools. (Apart from other tools like lenses (and camera's in a lesser extent))

I have to find a better way to mix that down. Colors looked much stronger in real life.

I can't imagine the sun, but I assume it is the steel sculpture that is rising..

The first one works best imo. - blueish and yellow .. nice use of complementary colours.
Fons - very soft rose! One can almost smell it.
Thanks Frank, Bruno and John .. for commenting on my Rododendron shots from yesterday.
May 31. The last spring shot. I have two big Laburnum trees just outside my bedroom windows. Lovely view these days - and nice scent when I open the windows. Sorry I didn't clean the windows..

I was at a data protection agency today. It's so "data protection" that even my reflection in the mirror is obfuscated.
Everything on the phone ...

Obfuscated Bruno. Magnificent.
