Title: [Theme] In search of spring, 2016
Post by: BW on March 08, 2016, 16:11:29
While waiting for a doctors appointment today a scrolled thru NG and saw Akiras pictures of the blooming Ume tree. I decided to kill some time and go down to the beach to see if spring had arrived here on my latitude (63 degrees north). Even though the weather was fine there was no sign of the first spring flowers. But apparently the water temperature was fine. The downside of living far north is that one hardly can keep up with the change of seasons. Suddenly spring is here, then its over. It would have been nice to se pictures of the succession of spring from you, living in the northern hemisphere. Maybe give and get some inspiration from each other?

My pictures from today was even checked by military police to see if I had photographed some boats they were using. How secret kan a inflatable boat be? Anyway, a first time experience for me :o

Børge, this is a really contrasting images of "spring", especially the last one.   :o

We used to have four seasons of roughly equal lengths, but the spring and the autumn have become shorter and shorter, and now both last only a couple of weeks.  So, the change of seasons are more and more abrupt here.  I'm not sure if it is the effect of the global warming.

You would scream a little (or more), but feel invigorated and having an adrenaline jolt ....

I would fear Jakov's scream could be the last noise he would make.  The same should go with me...

Title: Re: In search of spring
Post by: BW on March 08, 2016, 19:34:04
Akira, the weather has become more unpredictable and change between the seasons have become blurry. No doubt this an effect of climate change. But this time of year really brings out the contrasts. Melting during the days and freezing at night. Hopefully within the next month we get some flowers to brighten up the scenery.

Peter, its white, fluffy and gives you the most amazing skiing, even though the moose long for less browsing and more grazing.

Now, keep those contrasting images coming :)

I guessed so. I am on the brink of buying this lens, because it is not practical to bring my monorail into the field. In Germany these are sold new for 1700€ but it is possible to get them for 1500€ slightly used.

After spending a few days at the cabin, where winter still holds an iron grip, the search for spring continues. The bees startet buzzing today, the creek is open and the hazel have started to put some new color into the greywhitebrown color of transition into spring.

Very nice rendered and composed picture of the female hazel catkin. The latter are inconspicuous and one really need to get up close to appreciate their beauty.

The underwater bubble vortex is amazing. Is this some kind of water jet going into a larger water body?

Post by: BW on March 23, 2016, 17:02:29
The creek is entering an underground stone ditch where it crosses the fields. A nice place for the toads and the water shrew to spend the winter.
I used a reversed lens to capture the hazel flower. The Laowa 15 mm. I'm not that impressed by the resolving power of that lens. It clearly has it issues.

Spring seem like a abrupt consept in the US, while here in scandinavia its a longer transition process. No wonder the people differ in character?

Today I was out looking for the Pacific loon (Gavia pacifica), a 2nd observation in norway. I left the twichers with the unsuccessful watching and concentrated on finding clues of the coming spring. My second and third flowering plant observation this season was the Anemone hepatica and the Saxifrage oppositifolia. They were scarce, but snap worthy. I also discovered that the Nikkor O Auto 35mm f2 combined with the Nikon PK-12 made a nice setup for photographing flowers. Both pictures are taken at f16.

Bruno, this is a pleasant image.  I'm really curious about the origin of the name of the butterfly.
Thanks Akira. I didn't know but was also intrigued and had to look.  It was already known under this name in 1762. Apparently, the name comes from its color. In middle age, this mix of colors was called the color of the "devil with a cold". The wild wing shape was also said to be cut "devil's way". It was then associated with another devil connection: the name of a 13th century legendary hero, Robert le diable.

Today I found my neighbourhood totally engulfed in dense, wet fog. So I shot this damp, dreary harbinger of spring from my actual work station, without leaving the chair. Perfect conditions for a nature photographer, if I might say so.

As the house has triple-glazed window panes, it is well-nigh impossible to avoid reflections. But at least I can hint at what lens was used ....

Matthew,
this is a very nice result. Do you have a pic how your setup looks like?

It's a pretty simple rig.  It's a former Konica microscope adapter with a Nikon flange transplanted (note the hand made arrow for mounting), into which one can put basically anything that fits.  The lenses in this case are from a multi-lens turret used for typesetting.  The lenses vary in focal length and F stop but the less powerful ones can be used hand held.  The one used for this is one of the smallest, giving about 1:1.3 magnification, with an f stop I'd estimate at something around 6.

There's no focus adjustment, of course, so one just moves the camera, but the rig is so light and easily swung around that it's surprisingly easy to work in decent light, or with the built in flash when reflection is not a problem.

Although we had a mild winter (resulting in an over abundance of certain bug life) the spring here has been cooler than normal.  Consequently, we are just now seeing some of the blooming that in other years would have already peaked and declined.

A trip around the RV park pond found only a few plants in bloom.

The pond lilies are breaking out and responded to the full daylight sun and then re-furl by mid afternoon.

I call them 'snow white' because they are the last of the daffodils to bloom when the frost is gone and their whiteness reminds of the barely passed winter.

I do love rhododendrons. The blooms are exquisite, but plants themselves can look malnourished - it seems that they exhaust themselves in the effort of blooming.

Very much intentional. I made certain to have the sun point right at the lens instead of being blocked by the beams and stopped down to f11 to get the nice sunstar in there.
The 28mm f3,5 PC Nikkor makes beautiful sunstars! Just as lovely as the ones the 16mm f3,5 Fish-eye Nikkor makes :D

Even though the last few days have been dominated by sleet, snow and rain, it seems like spring inevitably is transferred into summer. The leaves are unfolding, flowers pop up everywhere and most of the birds are starting to nest. This is going the way it is suppose to :)

Very Nice Børge. Like the first one especially.

In the garden the golden rain tree (Laburnum wateri 'Vossii' to be precise) starts to bloom together with the Common Lilac now ;)

Very nice rendering of the golden rain. I have tried all angles and trick in the book on mine, but they never come out like yours. I guess the trick is to get in close. I will try when mine blossoms, which is after the 20. of june.

Thanks.  I tried a lot too.  ;)  It's a bit framed, the highlighted sky on the right side cut away.    A few tricks, I used 200mm (the first flowering parts are higher in the tree), no sun, just overcast to prevent over highlighted area's and used some leafs in the frame as a kind of green filter, also to temper the light as the shot was taken partly towards the sky.

One of the last things to decide it's spring, in fact so late we thought it was dead, was a hibiscus in the back yard (AKA Rosasharn for Steinbeck fans).  I guess it was just mostly dead.

Shallow depth of field and blur circles in the background create a lovely effect!
Title: Re: [Theme] In search of spring, 2016
Post by: the solitaire on May 22, 2016, 11:33:53
Thank you Jakov. The lens used is the 55mm f1,2 Nikkor-S.C. Used wide open nailing focus can be a bit tough but out of 60 pictures I took yesterday 12 were good enough to process with focus and framing the way I intended each shot. I hardly ever crop my shots in post processing because the 12 megapixel sensor on my camera requires me to frame as tight as possible already to preserve most of the detail. I believe none of the shots above was cropped in post. None of them were sharpened either. Most of what I did was raise the intensity of the greens a bit and bring back/tone down some highlights

Beautifully done, Buddy. Great effect.  I think the SC is even a bit 'softer' than the last Ai version of the 55/1.2
Title: Re: [Theme] In search of spring, 2016
Post by: the solitaire on May 22, 2016, 12:23:50
Thank you John. I do think sample variation plays a part there as well. At f1,2 there is just so much that can go "wrong" and that gives each copy of the lens a distinct and unique look. Personally I am very happy with my copy but always on the search for a 2nd copy because I really like this lens that much.

A few weeks ago Chris offered me a copy of the lens and in retrospect I should have taken him up on that offer.

Arend, how this calf shot is related to Spring. Yellow earmarks and Spring? I'm not challenging at all, just trying to understand. Terrific shot in any case.

Minneapolis, where 7 months are Scandinavian winter, Spring is the best and most welcoming season.

Akira & Jakov, thank you for your kind remarks.

The first and the third  were made with a samyang 8 mm f/3.5. I borrowed this lens from a friend as I wanted to play with a fisheye but didn't want to buy one  since it will not see enough use. As this lens does not cover full frame, some heavy cropping was needed.
The close up was made with an old sigma 300 mm f/4 af apo macro. Lousy af, but nice manual focus and attractive for close ups with a minimal distance of 120 cm and magnification 1:3

Joost, none of my lenses see enough use, but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't own them  ;)
In other words: given the lovely fish-eye photos that you have shown us, I find it a pity that you don't want to own one :)
