The petite Cooke Speed Panchro series 1 1" f/2 lens on my black Nikon Z fc. Seen in IR, which discloses the focusing adapter and Arca plate reflect a lot in IR, but not the lens itself. I'll paint the inside of the mounting disc with flat black later. The Z fc is IR-dark except for the top dials.

This seems to be an intriguing technique which has resulted like a pressed paper sculpture?
What did you start with? And do tell us what you then did with it to get this subtle effect.

Probably something like:

Plus any steps required afterwards

Hi Ann, Birna taught me the technique, and it is as she indicates.

I tried my trinity of 28 1.4e, 58 1.4g and 105 1.4e in the Z50 II, all with excellent results. Yesterday night I tried the 300 2.8 vrII. At night the camera hunted a bit to get the moon, rising in deep red in my corner of the woods. Here, a sooc image. Not even cropped.
I also tried the same combination to get some video while the moon was rising.

Seems you really like the Z30 + 24/1.7 combo? Is it plasticky like the kit lens for the Nikon DX/Z system?
Birna the lens haptics is very good on the Z30. I have a small bag where the Z30 & 24mm incl lens hood fit just. I don't even put a lens cover and so I'm always ready when the situation unfolds. The material is similar to the kit lens.
-
Good handling is always a big advantage for any gear combination. Mainly due to the lack of a view finder, I find myself using the Z30 mainly with wide or very wide angle lenses. On the Z fc these would mainly be Viltrox 13mm or 23mm, both f/1.4 designs, but they don't work well on the Z30. Again handling is the biggest issue. The lack of a viewfinder throws a spanner in the workings of the ultrawide Laowas like 9mm f/5.6 or 11mm f/4.5, as contrary to common myths about the large depth-of-field of wide lenses, they both need critical focusing to deliver their best. And a rear display in sunshine isn't the preferred approach to put it mildly.
The Voigt 15mm f/4.5 is just about perfect on the Z30 -- for me. Easy to do zone focusing by the handy focusing lever which is click-stopped at 1 and 0.5m setting; perfect for discreet shooting. One gets the feeling for the coverage and if doubt a quick look through the optical finder will help. The lens also adds some heft to the camera thus improves hand-holding it.
The kit lens 16-50 is optically speaking quite good, but hardly looks like it can take a beating in the field. I use it occasionally when nothing special is on my my mind.

Using Z30 in harsh sunlight feels like a "Kodachrome" moment.

Frank's recent visit made a dent in my banking account due to the allure of the Voigtländer 50mm f/1 Nokton lens, and flat-lined my car battery ... not sure how he managed that or was he innocent? All specimens in a perfect condition without traces of any slugs arriving before she did. I doubt she had walked more than 200m away before finding this culinary treasure.

My son is the young naturalist who told me about it. He is very excited to learn that several insects could be responsible and wants to dissect one of the galls.
Thank you, Birna :)
He'll probaby find eggs or already hatched grubs inside. If he rears the stuff in an enclosure, the true identity will eventually be revealed.
Apparently, the Solidago species are greedly devoured by a high number of insects and fungi. Some are just predators, others are leaf miners or gall makers.
The "standard" European site for plant parasites compiles a very long list,
https://bladmineerders.nl/host-plants/plantae/spermatopsida/angiosperma/eudicots/superasterids/asterids/campanulids/asterales/asteraceae/asteroideae/astereae/solidagininae/solidago/genus-solidago/
Poor plants. They don't stand a chance.

Nice one. I have the old Leica version in M39

I had that one as well, but sold it off. Just kept the Voigt 15mm f/4.5 SL in F-mount since it looked nice.

Plant galls are everywhere. Zillions of hungry insect grubs are ready to use leaves first as a home and shelter, then a place to have a feast. In doing so, the poor host responds by making a gall in response to the chemically-induced "hacking protocol" between the attacker and the host. The first tries to persuade the host of its innocence and tells it only wants a friendly place to live, it won't start late-night parties, and it won't be a bother. The latter, being suspicious by its very nature of a stationary existence, raise its hackles and starts to build protective walls around the point of intrusion. Some gall-inducing insects only hatch in the gall then exit to the outside and fly away, while others devour the leaf to a large extent, making the plant exude more chemicals in an attempt to make the intruder go away. It is a micro-scale war surging back and forth.
An example, the galls of the insect Euura proxima on leaves of the Crack Willow Salix x fragilis. I collected the galled foliage on my current trip, as I recalled Ian Watson's earlier post, and made a quick snapshot of the galls. The tiny grubs inside looked pretty and blue under my 14X hand loupe, but are too small for my 105mm MC to make anything sensible portrait, so I'll bring them back to the studio when I return from my trip. If they survive and haven't shrivelled up.

Hi Frank, I'm sure you've already noticed: unfortunately it's the bridge of the glasses and not the eyes. Aperture 1.0 seems to be very challenging.

in the viewfinder the focus was on her left eyball. later I noticed, that the diopter correction was wrong. In the following example the diopter correction was right and I could get nearly both eyes into focus at f/1

The Stanley Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the winner of the National Hockey League play-offs. "National" covers both the U.S. and Canada. "Hockey" means ice hockey here.
The Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Cup in 1967 and have shown no sign of repeating the feat during my twenty-five years in Canada. Nevertheless, loyal fans keep telling themselves, "Next year...."
The T-shirt on the left is misusing their logo to poke fun. The juxtaposition with the T-shirt on the right is icing on the cake.

A very "classical" photo in a monochrome/duplex style. But without your info I could not recognize the name or age or focal length or brand of the lens.

True, which is one one the important points to be drawn from the example.

For users of the Heligon/Rayxar lenses, here is something to lust for: a bespoke adapter for these massive "X-ray" type lenses to the Nikon Z series (except Z50, Z fc, Zf due to the finder overhang of these models). I convinced RAFCamera to build a prototype after my own measurements and received it today.
Z6/7/8/9 cameras will focus to infinity with most "X-ray" optics, if the rear part isn't conflicting with the film gate. Thus most Rayxars will not go to infinity on the Z30, whilst the Rodenstock TV-Heligon does it with ease.
The adapter is very affordably price (approx. USD 44,-) and nicely machined and finished. I'll try the adapters for a while to learn whether improvements are required. See https://rafcamera.com/adapter-m80x1f-to-nikon-z
-
For users of the Heligon/Rayxar lenses,
Do want to get pictoresque and poetic pictures with these lenses?
-
Most lenses can help in achieving that. It's the photographer who is the important factor in this "equation".

Nikon Z5 (full spectrum), Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 SE, Kolari 720nm clip-in filter.
(whilst the clip-in filter solves a lot of practical problems concerning adding bandpass filters to most lenses, it also tends to create its own issues in particular for wide-angles. Read: colour shifts away from centre of the frame. Still better than not having any filtration options, I think)

As usual, my local squirrel is a willing test subject when new equipment arrives. ;)

Are you sure his willingness to pose results from the excitement of the new gear rather than the food he gets :) :)
The Nikkor 500mm f/5.6 is a very nice lens, though. With or without squirrels.

Thanks, no human-sourced feeding occurred. :) the willingness was all about the nice cached cones he was peeling. (Feeding wildlife beyond what results from bird feeding is illegal in Alaska.)
While the 500PF for sure is a nice lens, I have had it for quite a wile now, so the test was not specific to that lens. ;)
