Westfield Heritage Village is a large collection of restored heritage buildings set in a conservation area. The buildings themselves are only open on Sundays and holidays in the warmer weather, with costumed interpreters on hand. However, they also host special events, including educational trips for children. We went to one on Tuesday.
This is Laura explaining what farm life was like for settlers in the early nineteenth century. (She remembered us from when she gave us a tour of her maple farm two years ago!)
Nikon Zf, 35mm f/2 AI (wide open).
-
For once, a true spring day with sunshine and temperatures well above the freezing point :) The local restaurant did brisk business today, as witnessed by the overflow of register receipts :)
Laowa 9mm f/5.6 on the Z30. It is pretty difficult to manually focus such a wide, and dare I say, darkish optic on an EVF. Especially when there is no traditional finder and you have to rely on the rear monitor screen instead. Thus results are a bit hit or miss. No problem really as I experimented to find out how tricky focusing this combination might be. Thus, further use of the Laowa 9mm will be on another Z model.
-
I am in awe! The 35mm f/2 AI was hard enough, especially with a moving subject.

A sudden and very rapid rise in temperature led to a massive, virtually explosion-like, leafing of the decidous riparian forests of the Nordre Øyeren delta, the largest inland delta of Northern Europe. The landscape overnight changed from dull greys into a bright, blazing green. Most of the trees are birches (Downy and Silver Birch) and their initial spring colour is a luminous almost lime-green, as the first week or so after leafing the "skin" (cuticula) of the leaf surface isn't properly developed and thus the foliage won't reflect the sky blues. After the first weeks the forest colours are more muted and take on a dullish green tinged with blue.
The leafing and opening of the pollen-loaded birch catkins coincided this year, thus anyone with a pollen allergy now is sneezing and coughing, yours truly included.
A cross-section of the riparian forests captured with the Nikkor 400mm f/4.5Z + TC14Z on my Z9. The distance to the houses in the background is around 4 km and they definitively are way out of the zone of focus. It was windy so I gave up any idea of focus stacking. Taken around 20:00 in the evening thus still plenty of light, but solar elevation is quite low this time of the day. We haven't the summer scenario yet.

Glass was expensive and heavily taxed in the early nineteenth century. So the farmhouse had small windows on the north side and larger ones on the south side, where they would be of more use.

I can only guess that the Z 4.5/400mm S is a great lens. I did no really have the physical strength to properly test it and tomorrow it ships back to Nikon...
... taking a few snapshots on the way to church this morning tells me that if I should need a 400mm lens it would be a great choice
1) it is light weight
2) AF is super fast
3) MF is snappy due to high contrast rendering.

Mixed feelings here too. I definitely raised the shadows in the foreground, although these parts are not relevant (only the text is). Maybe I'm carrying that antiquated preference for "balanced" shots. On the other hand, Moriyama is not the youngest...

I was browsing through a set of files from my microscope cameras when I came across an unusual folder. Obviously I had tried a specific 5MPix camera for non-microscope use and had hooked up varous likewise non-miscroscope lenses to it. Among the test samples I found this, taken with the Ultra-Micro-Nikkor 28mm f/1.8 and according to the text notes accompanying the image, at f/4. I also found an excerpt from an old Kodak pamphlet that fitted into the overall concept as it were. Oh, how difficult it is to predict even the near future !!

Formally, today is Norway's Constitution Day -- however we look through that and call it National Day. Which is duly celebrated from sea level to the highest mountain tops -- and beyond (by parachuters and divers).
Nearly half a million people amassed in Oslo, the capital with 600.000 inhabitants, to watch the gigantic traditional children's parade with more than 40.000 children on the main street towards the Royal castle. Sun blazing from a cloudfree sky from early morning to near midnight meant scores of people got heat strokes, and new temperture records for May were established over large parts of the country.
I resorted to this dish, quite patriotic, and cooling as well.

It was time for us to give our dog another "spa day" at the groomers. I love seeing the dogs. There's always a great looking pup being given regal treatment. Keydra is the stylist/groomer here. She also does our dog Christie. She's excellent and has a great rapport with the dogs. Photo done with a Fuji X-Pro2 and Voigtlander 21mm ƒ/4 Color Skopar lens.

Who needs more than one bit color depth? really?
Do you remember Kodalith film?
Even for high-contrast b/w images we need a few bits to make greys and avoid the image being just a line drawing.
-
Nice scene and image. My wife grooms Yaiza our labradoodle herself every 4/5 weeks.
Thanks, Luc.
I used to do our previous Wheaten, Kiri, and I've done Christie in her (and my) younger days. However, my spinal condition doesn't allow me to stand long enough anymore to do a proper job. Keydra is the best groomer we've had but the shop charges a lot for the service. I guess our pets are worth it to us.
Kiri was a Wheaten who had curly hair and it was hard to comb, brush and keep trimmed. Christie has fine, straight hair and a better disposition for grooming. She's an obstinate little dog but she is miraculously easy going on the grooming table.

Walked around today with the D5300 ir deeper filter and the 70-300 vr. It works every time. Focusing with liveview is very easy and spot on, of course. Plenty of detail in the frame and no hotspots at f8 as seen here.

Still far too early for the spring flood in "my" river, however currents are definitively getting swifter in the last days. Anyone unfortunate enough to tumble into the river wouldn't last for long. It's a popular place to visit for suicidally inclined persons, by the way.

Oops -- should have checked the EXIF -- this image was taken with the Laowa 11mm f/4.5, not the viltrox 20/2.8. Not that this changes the image an iota, of course. Just indicates to me I should drink morning coffe before posting to NG!!

Is this similar to "Every cloud has a silver lining" Fons & Birna?
(language & cultural context makes a big difference for sayings like these)
A friend once changed this to "Every bad workman has a silver lining" but by now we are way off topic.....

I had a wonderful visit to the Abbey in Tewkesbury, UK yesterday.
I need to go back with my camera, but for now this phone-pic shows modern attempts to solve the problem of heating such a big space, alongside the grace and serenity

If one pushes the camera hard enough, even a stock Zf may record a tad of IR.
In this case, the Nikkor 40mm f/2 was used wide open and camera settings ISO3200 and 1/5 sec. filter is R72, which is the "mildest" one of the true IR filters. Camera was hand-held. Sharpness is quite good actually, proving that AF focusing and VR in-camera did help, but noise is on the high side for a modern sensor. Thus the stock camera does not really *like* IR, just pretending to be IR-capable. Oh well, I don't believe in its bragging and have modifed Z camera (Z5, Z6) for true IR purpose. Just a quick experiments during my morning coffee break anyway.
