LED Lights - Using lenses to focus and dampen
« on: November 03, 2020, 12:39:55 »
So I got a fun little project ;)
Using lenses to focus and dampen light from LED lights - I have found asome really nice build quality LED Lights
And then I have adapted them for 39mm LTM Leica Thread Mount  :o

Current setup is with EL-Nikkor 50mm f/2.8 and Voigtlander 90mm f/3.5
So pin-spot on the statue and a wider beam on the top gold part.

Thinking about making a flashlight version for light-painting - Wouldn't it be great to be able to focus and dampen for the night scenes, with your lens of choice,,,  8)

Think about the same technology combined with a 400-600mm lens ... would create a pin-point spotlight :)

Amazing already.

can you post a "how to" ?

Thx! They actually need very little work to accept the mounts - They are extruded alloy housings, so one giant heat-sink ;)
Pretty waterproof with soft rubber seal IP65
I'll see if I take them apart - but it's really easy to do ;)
EUROLITE LED IP PST-10W 6400K Pinspot
They are like 50€  ;) the comparative ones for outdoor use is ten times that

The 'Erikian LED' concept might be great for UV LEDs. All the [UV] illumination in the world precisely focused onto the poor subject  and no heat issue :)

Yes that's one more application that would benefit for sure! ;)

BTW it could just as well be an Nikon F-mount that is used

Quite interesting - maybe, I can use such a system for my outdoor bird photo studio.

I like this idea - then you could also easily put an old zoom lens in front.

Great idea and, as always, modification work!

I wonder if lenses like XR Heligon would minimize the loss of light?   :o :o :o

They lend themselves to experimental work and modications, thus why not? I don't know if Erik has any such optic available to him although wouldn't be surprised if he had ...

The Lenses, optics behave similar to when used for photographic work - I would say that this is sort of the opposite of using Projection lenses for Photography  :o ;)
The LED element is clearly depicted/projected when you focus the lens, crisp and sharp.

The lens lets more light out the faster it is, so yes if you need high beam so to say you open up, if you want diffused and dampened you stop down.

Currently I have no super fast lenses in mount but could be great fun to try ;)

Sure zooms work as expected and yes for a focused light for a bird hide out studio as well - For this application an old Visoflex lens with mirror box on a tripod, would be very handy, you could focus the lens via the reflex mirror, then shift it open and fire up the LED though the lens  8)
