If I open the same RAW in 3 different RAW convertes I get three different looks.

Some RAW converters allow for default presets and some even stick to them.

Soo. If I process JPEGs the in camera settings are important. Not in RAW.

But that is not my point. My point is the way our expectations changed over the years.

The first tomatoe shot is mixed to how it really looked to the bare eye.

The second tomatoe shot represents the current expectation of how a photographic representation should look like.

Dirt on the sensor seems to be a constant with the D3. Should get out the swipes again.

Frank, I just now had time to catch up and read a few of the older posts. Your observation on changed expectations is indeed correct. What's mostly bothering me though is that photos tweaked to represent reality are, in many photo groups, not even considered worth a look where highly edited and colorized photos of otherwise mediocre quality are praised.

Buddy. The perception of quality content varies very much with the qualification of the participants in the forum. Many people like sunsets and many people like cats and dogs. Only very few can tell the difference between mediocre or exceptional design.

It's true perhaps perception of quality changed with the going-to-digital-process and even more important the growing importance of smartphone-images. There you obviously see a lot of oversaturated images corresponding the taste of the public. And fake vintage with created vignetting. This particulare taste translate itself also in the post-processing software-industry. One observation you can make is that black-and-white is still a minority, perhaps because light and framing (the basics of photography) are  more important to have an impact.

September 24th 2016 - Sunny and relatively warm.

The old wool mill  AaBe from early twentieth century is being rebuilt as a shopping mall. Half is now finished, they did a terrible job, in creating a normal shopping-centre look (except for the roof).  It makes me sad (and angry) how this special architecture has been ruined by brainless 'architects' just focussing on money and standardization.   Anyway...  Two shots
