Did I ever mention that apart from rust, I really like the look of solid brickwork?
Tight crop in a tight space. Overhead welding using a TIG machine.
After I took these shots we swapped places and I finished the weld while Peter tried to come at terms with the D3.

-
Interesting comparison Fons. Much warmer tones with the Df. And the AF 180mm is a very delicate lens.
-
I find the cooler tones more true, didnt change the wb, portrait mode in ps, desaturated a little bit.
-
Yes, that is true. I standard reset the tint of the whitebalance in the Df +10-20 to the violet as there usually is a green overcast.

Wb adjustment within Photoshop? i understand.
-
Yes, WB adjustment via Camera Profile in ACR - Disadvantage -- It needs fine tuning per photo. The green overcast is not a flexible one, it occurs more in heavy light. At least with my Df.

Love your entry, Kristina!

-
wow, great action shot!
-
#30. Simply stunning!
-
Pure stupid luck ;)
I personally like the 2nd photo in post #29 a lot better and am a bit ashamed of my mediocre performance today. Both of Kristinas photos use the frame a lot better then mine, and don't even get me started on picking my background.
Still, thank you for the kind words. The photo has some good aspects as well. I caught all of Amy as well as the frisbee in the frame. Also picked a favorable framing to get the sand in the focal plane, preventing this typical "my dog is flying high" look. Also managed to leave a bit of room in the direction of movement. It also helps the image, but I'm just not a fan of the full silhouette look. The image might have benefitted (a lot) had I moved 5 meters to the right, picking Amy in a 1/4 frontal angle. That would have resulted in an image with some serious 3D pop to it.
:)
(I'm quite critical on my own photos. That kind of is the fun in having a partner who is also a talented photographer. I measure my photos against Kristinas and find the good aspects of hers, compare those with the bad aspects of mine and already I found a thousand ways to improve my photography. I like the challenge in this)

I'll promise to do better tomorrow (today?)...

September 5th 2016 Sunny, warmer weather approaching.
Acacia gives a feeling of Spring, with it's warm fresh green colour. Background is the former (and only) Reformed Church in the extremely catholic Tilburg around 1800-1970. It was built in particular for the workers from the province of Holland at the National Railway and maintenance factory.

I prefer the second one, Fons. The first one looks too much underexposed in some way.

the first interpretation was a nod to 18th century painting
-
Fons, I really prefer the first one of those two. In part it did remind me of classic painting which often used a bark backdrop for a still-life (o how easy it is to act smart after all the facts have been revealed ;) )
But also because the OoF rendering is much more prominent and accentuated in that photo.
-
the first interpretation was a nod to 18th century painting

One of them, yes. Once I passed the easy ones, all welds are tested by means of x-ray to ensure they are as clean and free of faults internally as they appear to be externally. I still have 3-4 tests to go to get to the highly coveted 6G test. I should be able to get there within the next 4 weeks. That is also the time left until ourdaughter will/should be born so I'd better make it because I want to spend time in the hospital and at home then rather then spend time doing welding tests. :)

Top 3 pokeweed shot :) ... I like that pokeweed red.
Thanks Lars. It is a special red indeed.
"The berries, according to Terreil (Comptes Rendus, 1880), contain phytolaccic acid, which is gummy, non-deliquescent, soluble in water and alcohol with acid reaction, hardly soluble in ether. Haverland (Dissert., 1892) likewise obtained it, with small quantities of acetic, citric, and tartaric acids. W. Cramer (Amer. Jour. Pharm., 1881, p. 598) found the juice of the berries to contain gum, sugar, malic acid, and coloring matter. The coloring matter was isolated in comparatively pure form by Herman Harms (Amer. Jour. Pharm., 1893, p. 1) as a purplish-red powder insoluble in absolute alcohol, ether, and chloroform, but readily soluble in water. It is destroyed by ferric chloride, chlorine water, hydrogen sulphide, etc. It reduces Fehling's solution direct. Alkalies dissolve it with yellow color which is turned red by acids. Phytolaccin is an indifferent crystallizable principle isolated by Edo Claassen (New Remedies, 1879, p. 326) from the seeds of phytolacca berries; it is soluble in chloroform and alcohol, slightly soluble in water. It was also obtained by Harms (loc. cit.) and analyzed by Haverland (1892), who found it to be free from nitrogen and related to the tannins."

September 12. Today I visited a museum with an interesting collection of Danish historic and prehistoric items.
Below
- a skeleton of an Aurochs that dates back to approx. 8000 BC.
- a grave from early Viking age - this one is unique because it is a woman having a weapon (spear) at her side. She might have been a sorceress or priestess. The stones placed on her body is to avoid revenance... :o
-
Interesting, Lars.
Perhaps she just looked like a man and was a good fighter, who can tell ;)

Good point John! - she was probably a Valkyrie. She also had a her slave in the grave .. he had been hanged and then put beside her.

I am happy to use the cool morning for work. Yet now I am starting
to get tired from all the words I wrote and review and edit.
my brain needs sleep to digest all that, put it into a better, clearer
order and make it easily digestable for the readers.

When I saw this composition I instantly knew that it would fit very well in the "monochrome but not B&W images" thread
I find the scene colors depressing.
good geometry though. So I suggest to remix that in
more appealing black and white.

John, glad you discovered for yourself that the 20mm f3,5 UD Nikkor is all kinds of amazing.
For special effects, try pointing it into the sun :)

Impressive mouth opener of the courgette Frank.
Yes Buddy, tried all of Nikon's 20mm's, all have their drawbacks, compared to the 17-35. The 20 UD seems to bring something special. I like it.
Oh, the sun shot, yes, impressive :D

One day we all gonna die, some sooner, some later. The older we are the sooner we probably die. I see people on a scientific diet dying early and people smoking, doing drugs, alcohol and any other "health sin" live long and happy. Getting up in the morning is a risk, staying in bed its a risk...
In my world a day without fun or being nice and forgiving and loveable to myself and to other people is a waste, many such days mean an early grave and possibly a bad "life before death" ... so, Fons, where is your point?

Not sure about the Voigt, but I had the Nikkor 20/3.5 AI, 20/4 AI and the 20/2.8 AIS and for me the UD is the clear winner with regard to colour, bokeh, distant, has less distortion and is therefore useful for a lot of applications and subjects. But these are of course personal preferences. perhaps Buddy has experiences with the other lenses?

September 15. Today I went to a location I've been planning to visit for a while. It's a spot that was photographed by a Danish landscape photographer, Janne Klerk, and was included in one of two books with photos of the Danish coast line (7500 km). My understanding is that it was a project that took her three years to complete. The location is part of the west coast of Sjælland (Zealand).

I took 20 photos today, but both films still need to be developed, so nothing show for today
John, I see you are enjoying that UD Nikkor. That's one of the lenses I used today

I completely missed this post. Will try to make good on that now.
In a non-scientifical comparison between the 20mm f3,5, the 20mm f4, the 20mm f2,8 Ai-S and the 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD the results showed that between the copies tested:
The 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD has the highest centerresolution and sharpness
The 20mm f3,5 Ai has the highest flare resistance
The 20mm f2,8 Ai-S has the highest corner sharpness
The focal plane of the 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD is strongly curved. When used well you can get images with a sharp foreground, a sharp subject and sharp corners wide open.
The 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD has light falloff towards the corners, but less then the 20mm f3,5 Ai and the 20mm f4 Ai and less then the 20mm f3,5 Voigtlander.
The voigtlander comes closest to the performance of the 20mm f2,8 with the exception that it suffers more from CA and has quite a color cast towardswarm/red/orange.
The 20mm f3,5 and 20mm f4 Ai suffer strongest from barrel distortion. I believe the 20mm f2,8 Ai-S was slightly ahead of the 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD in this regard. The Voigtlander 20mm f3,5 is quite bad in barrel distortion as well.
Now on to first hand experience, I owned the 14-24 f2,8 AF-S zoom Nikkor. Bought the 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD to save space when I didn't need 14mm and here are my personal findings:
The 14-24mm f2,8 AF-S Zoom Nikkor is better from 14-19mm and better again from 21-24mm. It also performs better then the UD Nikkor between f2,8 and f3,4.
But at 20mm and f3,5 it only beats the UD Nikkor in light falloff.
I couldn't find any flaws in regards to sharpness in the UD Nikkor on the 36 Mpix D800. The center is sharp and the lens appears to outresolve the D800 sensor there with ease.
Stopping down does little to increase the center sharpness. But stopped down to f8 the edges and corners sharpen up considerably.
After 6 months of using the UD Nikkor I sold my 14-24mm zoom. The one wide angle Nikkor that positively appears sharper then the UD Nikkor (sharper then sharp) is the 16mm f3,5 Fisheye Nikkor.
-
Thanks for the clarification, Buddy.

Yes. The 36mp files with the UD are amazing.
The 17-35 comes close with comparable sharpness but it has an ugly distortion at 20mm with soft corners as well. The rendering of the UD is sweeter and the colours are better (and bokeh).
-
Thanks Bud for the explanations, remains the 20/1.8g for the equation.
i have to be happy with the voigt 20/3.5, nikkors 20/1.8g, 17-35/2.8 and 14-24/2.8 (or the 18/4). ;D
-
Fons. The 184.1 does not only feature eye popping superb IQ but also a very fine spun
Compostion.
-
John, the 20mm f3,5 UD Nikkor bokeh is pleasant indeed.
Fons, I personally tried the Voigtlander 20mm f3,5 a few times when I saw one in camera stores, but I never liked what it gave me enough to buy one. And then I found my UD Nikkor for which I paid 27 Euros. That kind of solved my dilemma of wanting a small wide angle lens that would fit in a coat pocket. (the Voigtlander is considerably smaller though, but the UD Nikkor fit the bill close enoug)
I also own a 24mm f2,8 Nikkor-N.C which is another, even smaller, perfectly sharp wide angle lens. It is fairly well corrected as well, but wasn'treally wide on the D300 I was using back then.
It appears you are set up well enough in the 20mm FL to be happy with whatyou have :)
The only argument I could bring up is:

Vegetables and fruit are healthy, but with fruit dental hygiene is very important because of the combination of sugars and acids.
Life creeping is a photo I like a lot. Can't quite put my finger on it. Possible it is the combination and arrangement of shapes and colors. Well seen!
Yes, 27 Euros. I got a good deal on it, and the glass is just as perfect as it comes. The body, as you can see, shows a little wear. Since it is my most used rectilinear wide I do not feel particularly guilty
-
Like that life creeping shot a lot too. The colours, the structure, the memory of childhood before too tidy family members demolished it all.....
That was a good deal, Buddy. Well I searched nearly two years for my copy, first owner, photographer, immaculate glass, factory Ai'd and of course, signs of usage on the barrel ;) By the way, the price of the UD in 1971 was 1.200 Dutch Gulders, about 1.200 DM, and two month salaries.
-
Thank you for the life creeping comments.

What a remarkable and emotional story, Frank. I can imagine you were moved.
-
Thank you Frank for sharing your story. What does "discontinued" mean?
Do they not keep graves older than 26 years then?
Although I am not a fan of having a person buried - I prefer cremation - I am extremely respectful of graves in existence. I do not visit graves of those I knew as I find it too painful - but I do photograph old graves. Even that has a huge affect on me.
-
A grave is something like a piece of land you rent from your city.
You pay for something like an "initial resting period" can be 25 to 30 years.
Then the family receive a letter asking if they want to keep the grave and pay for another 5 to 30 years or the grave will be discontinued, plants and stone removed and marked as "free". After some years someone else might be buried there. The rent can be several hundreds of Euros per year.
Mother and father of Kristian might still be alive and his brother and sisters too. So I wonder why the grve is discontinued. Maybe they do not want to remember?

Maybe Kristians parents thought a bit like I tend to. A persons memory is not kept alive by visiting graves. Of course I do respect that other people find consoleance in doing so, but I prefer to keep the memory alive by being inspired by peoples lives and not let that inspiration dissipate.
By wat you shared here, it seems to work that way for you. Black Dove? I own a few books by the Black Dog company :) Different thing maybe, but Wizards indeed.

John - just curious why the former buildings have been teared down. They don't seem particularly old. Simply renewal of the street maybe?
-
I think they were built in the 1920-30's, but they have been renovated a few times, and were excellent and cheap rental houses. There are very strange things going on in this country. These houses are just teared down to built new houses for the private market, and decreasing the stock of low-rate rental houses. City Hall calls it 'Renovation'...

A bit of a chaotic shopping centre, Frank. Is Bad Godesberg a vivid town? Chicken does look nice, however ;)
I feel all is dead since the diplomats moved to Berlin. Now we have a very crude mixture:
The UN people ... highly sophisticated and rich ... form their own closed shop
The private ex-staff of the rich diplomats stayed in Bonn and proliferated although they do not have any economic perspective, but grill some chicken and falafel and stuff...
The richies that have lived in Bad Godesberg before the government came hire security
The Saudi-Arabians are retreating but left some people calles "Salafists" who are very close to radical Islam ... a while ago there was a stabbing with a young radical killing a police woman
In the Arab owned streets no Germans want to live and the Arabs try to push the Germans out who are still left...
Then there are the rich medicine tourists from all over the world who come here to let their bodies mend and the people renting out to them, pushing poorer people around and out
To make a long story short: Bad Godesberg was a renowned Spa for Centuries, then the Diplomats came when Bonn was capital, the Diplomats went when Bonn returned to normal, the UN came, lots of IT and crazy startups in the wake of the Big Players "DHL / Deutsche Post" ... "Deutsche Telekom" .... "Postbank" and some other big and medium big players.
Bonn is quite consistent still: boring bourgoise, but the southern Part, Bad Godesberg is torn, confused, searching for a new identity.
The shopping centers, strange corners, all fallen out of time...

RFC
-
September 23rd Sunny, will be a warm weekend.
Well Frank, unpumped and natural should not be too difficult. ;) This is a completely unedited RAW from the Df. Resized in Bicubic - Smooth gradients to 1200.
The second one is edited to my liking ( at the moment)
-
Frank and John, which Picture Control do you use? I use "Flat" and with the sharpening set to "zero".
-
Picture control, Akira? That's the in-camera setting for jpg's, not? I took directly the NEF and loaded it into ACR 16 bit- (all settings to 0) and resized in CC.
-
John, if I understand correctly, the NEF itself is not affected by the Picture Control settings, but ACR will open and display the NEF according to the Picture Control settings.
-
John, if I understand correctly, the NEF itself is not affected by the Picture Control settings, but ACR will open and display the NEF according to the Picture Control settings.
I just found that my ACR has been set to "Adobe Standard" in the "Camera Profile" pull-down menu under the camera icon tab.
What is your settings in your camera and in ACR?
-
No, not really. That's actually impossible in ACR. It's probably overwritten by the camera-profile, I guess. Anyway, in-camera Profile I just have the Standard and sharpening set at 9.
-
ACR has Adobe Standard, but it's overwritten with camera settings, I think.
In ACR the file opens always with Color Space: ProPhoto RGB in 16 bits
-
I only use ACR through Lightroom, but camera profiles certainly do affect raw files. Normally when I import raw files recently in my case Fuji RAF files the camera profile is set to Adobe Standard! When I change to Provia Standard there is definitely a change on screen!
It has been quite a while since I imported an NEF file! so I can't remember how they were affected.
-
My NEF file seems to be opened under Adobe Standard, regardless of the camera setting, which I never noticed!
I think Mike is experiencing the same behavior of ACR...
-
Yes, so ACR opens neutrally without any In-Camera profiles, as it should. A Raw file cannot have any pre-settings which just apply to view in the camera.
-
Akira that is right, I haven't found a setting to open a file(s) using a camera setting so I have to change the profile whilst editing! Of course an in camera profile will only affect a jpeg file!
Just have to remember to change it while in edit mode!
-
Okay solved :)
A young yellow leaf of the lime tree (Linden)
-
If I open the same RAW in 3 different RAW convertes I get three different looks.
Some RAW converters allow for default presets and some even stick to them.
Soo. If I process JPEGs the in camera settings are important. Not in RAW.
But that is not my point. My point is the way our expectations changed over the years.
The first tomatoe shot is mixed to how it really looked to the bare eye.
The second tomatoe shot represents the current expectation of how a photographic representation should look like.
-
John and Frank, thanks for your input. I will just make it into a habit to make sure of the camera profile setting in ACR.
And, Mike, thanks for chiming in.
Sorry folks, for straying. Let's go back to the Daily Updates!

Frank, I just now had time to catch up and read a few of the older posts. Your observation on changed expectations is indeed correct. What's mostly bothering me though is that photos tweaked to represent reality are, in many photo groups, not even considered worth a look where highly edited and colorized photos of otherwise mediocre quality are praised.
-
Buddy. The perception of quality content varies very much with the qualification of the participants in the forum. Many people like sunsets and many people like cats and dogs. Only very few can tell the difference between mediocre or exceptional design.
-
It's true perhaps perception of quality changed with the going-to-digital-process and even more important the growing importance of smartphone-images. There you obviously see a lot of oversaturated images corresponding the taste of the public. And fake vintage with created vignetting. This particulare taste translate itself also in the post-processing software-industry. One observation you can make is that black-and-white is still a minority, perhaps because light and framing (the basics of photography) are more important to have an impact.

September 24th 2016 - Sunny and relatively warm.
The old wool mill AaBe from early twentieth century is being rebuilt as a shopping mall. Half is now finished, they did a terrible job, in creating a normal shopping-centre look (except for the roof). It makes me sad (and angry) how this special architecture has been ruined by brainless 'architects' just focussing on money and standardization. Anyway... Two shots

That is very true, and in a dog forum or car forum I would expect readers to prefer photos of dogs and cars. But in photography groups I would expect people to primarily focus on the photography aspect. And that is where I make my first mistake. Expectations. I should just discard them ;)

Daily life: Rollerskates, Headscarfs and ?? I guess you mean those tattoo's?
Thanks Buddy and Frank.
Made a quick setup when receiving the lens yesterdag. Goal was to have the largest focus distance. The inner tube thread of the Leica is about 38,5mm, used a step-up ring from 39mm to 52mm and taped it to a cheap and thin BR-2 to get the Nikon mouth. So this is fixed now at about 1 meter.
There are two further options: connecting this with a moving helicoid in F-mouth, so that does allow focussing, but only get you closer.
But in the lens, there is room to shave some 1 to 1,5 cm to get directly to the back lens. If a different connection is made directly in the moving helicoid, and having the F-mouth, there should be more flexibility. It is a bit comparable with the solution Klaus uses as explained on his website.
Two photo's, one is compared with the Nikkor 28/3.5 AI to have an idea of the size ;)

Fons and John, excellent outdoor captures, but Frank. The light in that church. That is incredible! I would say it almost gives the mass an apocalyptic feel, or at least a feeling of transcendance, which, thinking of the wile of these old glass masons, will have been very intentional. Very well caught. Very well seen.
I saw a lot of similar light today, but I didn't feel the vibe, so any attempt to capture the light would have resulted in disappointment. In the end, nottrying was just as bad ;)

What a flare, Fons. ;) I use the HN-24 too, I guess this is the 50mm side? I loved the 50-135 on the D700, but I like it less on especially the D800 and also on the Df. (strange enough).
Thanks Lars, yes, the sun exaggerates a lot.
Here more shadow, and probably more of it's natural color...

Fons, maybe the hood was wrong mechanically, but the vignetting at the top corners concludes the white-blue gradation very well. So, it was photographically correct. :)
Fortunately today i found the original designated HK-10, somewhere in a drawer :).
