I'm using Thinkpads. Not certain what you imply with "Fixed battery, fixed RAM, proprietary SSD" as the Thinkpads have none of these features. They really are excellent for tinkering to make the setup optimal for a specific use. Currently running them with 32 GB RAM and 1.5 - 2 TB TB SSD drives.

That is how I'm set up at home Thinkpad and Apple Cinema Display if that is what your asking, the Thinkpad has MiniDisplay port connection,,,

Problem is they don't sell the Retina Display yet, the LG 4K and 5K enroute are not Apple or oem, so not the same as the iMac4K or 5K,,,

Plus put the machine in a docking station and there is no end to all the possible connections you can enjoy ...

My Thinkpad Ultradock has at least one display port, just not mini. Buy an adapter if you need to connect to the mini-version.

I do not think it supports 4K resolution though.

Yes no 4K - They 'only' support up to 2560x1600 DVI-D

The solution for all connectivity problems? (in your own home office, not on the move)

Please feel free to rubbish this option  ;D

The dock is very cool. BUT it is not so portable.

I think this is what upsets me the most about the new MacBooks. I want more portability without a lot of hanging dongling thingies. (Oh LA!! This is making me laugh. But you know what I mean....I hope.)

It's bad enough that I forget I have an external hard drive dongled onto my MacBook and then pick up the laptop to move to a more comfortable place only to have a hard drive land on my toe.

Here is a riff on the need for dongle doodads. It is really kinda silly but after a while I had to laugh too.

From what I understand, Apple will not manufacture standalone monitors anymore: http://www.macrumors.com/2016/10/28/apple-out-of-display-business/

In other news, it's even more important now to get your configuration correct as even the SSD is now soldered onto the motherboard now, except for the Macbook Escape: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2016/11/touch-bar-mbp-teardown-soldered-ssd-cosmetic-speaker-holes-and-more/

They have also posted a review of the new touch bar models: http://arstechnica.com/video/2016/11/the-2016-13-and-15-inch-touch-bar-macbook-pros-reviewed/
