Title: So, what cameras are you using nowadays?
Post by: Jan Anne on June 15, 2015, 00:17:11
Just curious what cameras you guys and girls are using nowadays?

Though I still consider myself a Nikon shooter my only camera at the moment is the Sony a7S which serves my current needs as a travel / hiking camera perfectly with its small size, high ISO low pixel sensor, electronic first curtain (I shoot a lot at slow shutter speeds) and the capability to use lenses with several lens mounts which currently includes Nikon F, Canon EF, Leica M and LTM, Contax G, Sony FE, etc but I plan to thin the herd a bit in the coming months.

So, what are you using these days?

After quite a lot of Nikon gear, I kept the D3x and settled for the Df as my everyday camera. My old collection of MF lenses is seing a lot of use, amid some AF's ones !

My photography covers many fields so camera and gear are diversified a lot.

Plus far too many lenses, most of which are in Nikon F mount and CPU-enabled.

Maybe I should list a lens house or two?

Df. Sometimes D800 if I need better AF (coverage) or anticipate heavy cropping (birding).

And when on travel (like now) OM-D E-M1.

I'm using the Nikon D300s as my main camera, but I also use an FM2n and an F6 when I get a chance to use film.  I have quite a bit in the refrigerator.
I also have a Rolleiflex 3.5 F that I pull out once in a while to keep the shutter going.  I had a Yashica TLR, but the shutter froze up from lack of use.
I also have two Sony point and shoot digital cameras that I carried yesterday to a car outing in our neighborhood.  The older one even has a small viewfinder that zooms with the lens.

List: D600 D3 X100T Sinar P2 with D600 as digiback D600 with Absolute Pano Adapter with 800Megapixel of 360°x180°, some lenses for the Nikons and the Sinar.

Comment: The better I get along with the D600 the less I use the D3. The old workhorse still has an ergonomic advantage but that is it. As I do not use Zooms my AF performance is not as fast as it could be with Zooms. With AFS primes I feel the D600 to be in the lead (not with screwdriver). IQ is significantly better also LowLightPerformance. Sometimes I thought why not replace the two with 2xD750 but no. I have the Absolute so I am destined to keep the 600 plus the 24G anyway. Plus the limits to my photography are not on the equipment side. Professionally my ability to conduct business and health issues are limiting, I actively  work on both. Artistically I learn everyday also in the technical domain I advance my knowledge all the time.

I really wish for a silent camera with a longer lens to accompain the X100T which is great for unintrusive shooting. The Nikons are huge and a tad bullying.

I have a D810 and two D3X, they are used for both personal and paid work - the D3X is still my favourite camera. I also use an RX100 for aerial photography from my Bumble-Bee (DJI Phantom 2).  I am more interested in lenses than cameras at the moment...

Mostly D800, but when the light is good I still prefer my D2Xs, especially with the longer lenses.

My D300 has been passed on to my son who is making good use of it, while my D70 has been passed on to my 13yr old daughter.

Still own a F90, 601, F2 and F3 cameras, with the F2 and F3 still being used for the odd B&W film. I would love to still get my hands on a F and F4 to complete my film camera collection.

On the lens side I use a 50 f1.8, 105 f2.8, 16-28 f2.8 Tamron, 24-70 f2.8 Nikkor, 70-200 f2.8 VR1 Nikkor, 300 f2.8 AFI lenses mostly, while on the film cameras I have a 50 f2, 135 f2.8 Nikkors, as well as some Soligor teles.

I currently have the D810 and D3X. The D810 is my favorite, I like it a great deal and there isn't a lot that I would change in it. The D3X I use in the studio and as a backup for the rest. Next year I will probably add a third camera.

Ideally I would like a Df with a larger autofocus point spread (otherwise I like the Df a lot), but in the absence of such a model I will look at what Nikon offers next year and decide based on that.

Nikon D3X is my basic work camera used for Architecture Product and Event photography I like it since it gets the job done no matter what.
When I need higher resolution or field of view I stitch with PTGui
Lovely images from this work horse, only real issue is the lack of really low ISO performance so I might add a Df to the camera pool...

The back up is a D7000 also nice for long lens work.

For discrete, travel and everyday shooting I use a Leica M9 very similar quality, look and feel to the D3X so can be used in tandem.

I have an old Nikon D200 that has an Lifepixel IR filter installed, a lot of fun :)

D40X for what ever or whoever needs to borrow a camera.

Nikon F5 for nostalgic reasons :)

Nobody mentioned owning a D750, why is that?

I've played with one on the Photokina and it seems like a very capable camera.

The feature set of the D750 is very nice but  I find it uncomfortable to hold (the grip is very thin and deep and I just can't seem to fit my right hand around it). I think it's designed for a different shape and size of hands than mine, which is fine, after all photographers come in all sizes and shapes and it is good that there is corresponding variety in camera shapes and sizes.  A second issue is the sound - I do quite a lot of concert photography and would prefer the camera to be quieter. Finally a third issue is that it doesn't have EFCS which I find very useful for telephoto landscape and close-up photography on the D810. I think 24MP is certainly enough resolution to be able to take advantage of EFCS.  Perhaps there are some problems with EFCS that Nikon knows about but doesn't want to discuss publicly, and that's why only the D810 has the full implementation so far. I recall reading a Nikon web page document that noted that with PC-E lenses the exposure can be uneven if EFCS is used with the lens in tilted or shifted position. I haven't noticed any such problems. Some have commented that EFCS can lead to (rolling shutter?) problems with moving subjects but to be honest with the current implementation tied to M-UP it would not cross my mind to attempt photography of a moving subject with EFCS.   :)

Andreas (afx) recently switche from D700 to D750.  He may chime in in the meantime...

As for me, I returned to D7000 after some different brands and models.  Some of which are higher-end models, but I ended up loving the user interface and the image character of D7000.  The AF is one of weak points of D7000, but my sample has been calibrated at Nikon service and focuses fairly accurately.  My most used lens is AF-S DX 35/1.8G which is also very good for stitching.  For closeups, I use Nikkor-O 55/1.2 and an enigmatic Nikkor 50/1.4 without aperture and focus mechanism.

I also use and love my humble Panasonic GF5 and Samyang 7.5mm/f3.5 fisheye combo.

Current Lineup:
D750 with the D700 as a backup.
D300 is used by the wife for PJ shots.
D200 went to my mom.

D70, 2*F100, 2*F801s and F601 where used in the past.

For me the D750 has a bit smallish buffer, a slightly annoying AF button placement (I tend to touch the AF selector disk with the side of by thumb) and misses the built in viewfinder cover, but apart from that it is a seriously nice camera.
The small buffer issue can be mitigated a bit by switching to 12bit lossy compression, which still delivers more than 14 bits on the D700 and one really has to push the files hard to see the difference. I use the U1/U2 settings to switch between regular shooting at 14bits and action at 12bits (the also switches the initial AF settings).
In contrast to the D700 silent enough to shoot A Capella concerts (http://images.afximages.com/Concerts/Sixte-ajout%C3%A9e-Haar-2015-1/), and a significantly higher DR than what I was used to from the D700, so pulling up shadows is extremely easy.
Shooting concerts at ISO3200 still allows me to pull up shadows a bit with noise that is manageable or at least not to painful too look at.
Works with my large hands (but as usual I need a grip, third party in this case as Nikon took half a year to deliver). The deeper grip actually makes it easer to have it hanging loosely in my hand compared to the wider grip of the D700. Still mulling over getting a hand strip as a regular camera strip is often a burden.

Thanks to some silly circumstances I am still not using the D750 as much as I should ;--(

cheers
afx

I mentioned the D750 twice and that I did not replace my currents because of the accompaining infrastructure. I hope more for a 24MP ... D5 which will then degrade the D600 to a panorama only machine.

After slogging around Myanmar in 2013 with 2 FF bodies and an assortment of lenses, I came back with a backache and sold it all and bought an Oly OMD-5 and 4 wonderful lenses - panasonic 12-25, 35-70, Oly 20 and Oly 45. Plenty of everything for what I shoot - which doesn't require the hi-IQ that most of you love.  Lately I bought a Sony A7 Mark II with a 24-70 which I love.

Planning to add another body and the Sony Zeiss 55 if the A7 S II proves its merit.

Could you elaborate on the reasons to get rid of the D7200? I am still tempted to get a DX-Body, but currently I am happy with what I have. thank you.

Firstly, the D7200 is an excellent DX camera, but it just wasn't for me. I purchased the D7200 for "reach"  for my birding duties, but it didn't work out as once you get into the higher ISO's, say above 800-1600, noise became an issue for me. When birding, I would be using my 400 either bare - 600mm with 1.5x crop, with the 1.4x TCIII = 560mm - 840mm with 1.5x crop, or the 1.7x TCII = 680mm - 1020mm with 1.5x crop, or the 2x TCIII = 800mm - 1200mm with 1.5x crop. When you are using it at these longer focal lengths, especially when crop factor is taken into account, then you need to ramp up the shutter speed to stop the bird's movement - VR only works to stop camera movement - and once you ramp up the shutter speed, then you are also having to ramp up ISO's and this is where it starts to all fall apart. In good light I may get away with it, but most smaller birds like to lurk in the shadows and hence the problem. The thing is, the IQ from the D810 is so damned good even at high ISO and cropped to DX, it is better than the D7200 or at worst just as good, therefore there was no advantage in using the D7200. Another thing is that I would have to keep changing cameras between the D810 and the D7200 out in the field all the time and I may miss opportunities whilst doing this.

If I were to use the 400 bare and were in good light, then a DX camera like the D7200 makes sense, it's just when you get to these extra long focal lengths that things start to fall apart with the crop sensor idea, IMO. The D810 is still best IMO for these extra long focal lengths.

D800E, D800, Fujifilm XE-1.
I miss the 'last forever' battery and all-info external displays of the D3.
I may change to the D810 when budget allows, for the reduced vibration.  Hopefully Nikon has fixed the 'mystery shifting diopter adjustment' on the D800/E that I experience.
I'll be looking at the Mk. 2 version of the Sony A7s, mainly for the video.
The Fujifilm XE1's EVF is dim in bright sunlight and the camera has responsiveness issues.
That is all.

I use a mix of Canon and Nikon cameras and lenses. My wife/mentor's employer-issued Nikon D300s was what caused me to become interested in SLR shooting, but for budgetary reasons, I started with a bag of fortuitously-available Canon kit that included a "Rebel" body with a quite decent Tokina macro lens and a Canon 580EX Speedlite flash. I added an inexpensive pre-owned Canon 40D camera, to take advantage of the nice lens and flash.

Today, my "on-duty" cameras are a pair of the 7D Mark II, with an older 7D as a spare. I own these cameras, and use them for forensic/evidentiary images at crime scenes and hospitals*. During personal time, I will use a telephoto lens on these Canons, for birds and such.

I use Nikon D700 cameras for most of my personal shooting. Until recently, I used mostly compact prime lenses on Nikon cameras, but added a 24-70/2.8G and 14-24/2.8G last month.

I do not know if the trend will persist, over time, but it seems I am following two paths, cropped-frame Canon, and FX Nikon.

My wife uses D7000 and Df cameras.

*I do not claim to be a "professional" photographer. I do strive to deliver good images, but my salary is not affected by my added duty, other than receiving compensatory time when my work continues beyond normal duty hours. I remain, primarily, a first-responder.

Panda Df for me.
The Df loves my old Nikkor-H 85mm f1.8, 105mm f2.5 (with f32) and the Nikkor-H-C 24 f2.8. These lenses were all purchased in 1974 through 1978 when I was in university! I wish I kept my 55mm f1.2......  So, I use the 50 f1.8 kit lens.

The Fuji G-Series is great and it is easy to get all sorts of film for it.

For me film is over for the time being. Large Format is with the Sinar and D600 as Digiback (might be a Fuji or Sony in the future) OR: With my ABSOLUTE Pano adapter which gives me 800 Megapixels from one roundtrip 360°x180°

The inevitable question... always fun to reply and read other replies.

I have sold all my Nikon stuff except for a few MF lenses that I have chipped myself, which I might use again in the future. No AF Nikkors remain in my cabinet.
The only system camera I have is aFuji X-T1 with several Fuji lenses, plus a RX100 (Mk I) for casual shots and video, and (rarely) underwater photography with an underwater enclosure.

Well the route for me was
- Olympus Trip (1975)
- Cosina (1977)
- Various Pentax in 1980's, finishing with
Pentax LX (I never owned a film Nikon, but the LX was my favourite ever body)
   And a Pentax 6x7
- Long pause when children got in the way
- Minolta A1
- Nikon D50 (2005)
- Nikon D300 (2008 till present)

There's no sign that I will move to another camera body at the moment.
But hey, who knows what the future might bring?

A couple of Olympus OM-D E-M5 bodies for event and PJ work.

For my street work, I am still shooting my Panasonic GF-1.  In the very near future, I will be adding a Panasonic GX-7 for the street stuff.

And a bunch of micro 4/3 lenses to fit all the cameras.

Nobody mentioned owning a D750, why is that?

I've played with one on the Photokina and it seems like a very capable camera.

A D750 is my only DSLR. I bought a Fuji X-T1 and used that for a while. Impressive camera in many ways but I couldn't come to terms with the AF performance, particularly not C-AF. Perhaps the announced new firmware would change that but it's too late. I sold my Fuji gear and bought a D750 which I quite like. I'm impressed by the performance compared to the D700 which I owned before.

For snapshots, both still and video, I use my iPhone 6.

D4
D7100 with grip
X100T

D4 is my favorite, D7100 gets taken out often and X100t goes with me when traveling out of town.

The X100t will go with us on our upcoming bicycling vacation in the coastal part of Tuscany.

Fuji X-T1 but I still need to learn how to use it decently.
And Nikon 1 V1 for IR although I don't use it much currently. It should see more use during the summer when I have time to experiment again.

D700's

D200 & D80  (Back up and lenscompatability of D200)

Sony NEX-5-R  just acquired for the price of an adapter. Interesting to use with all kind of lenses (The flange focal distance and the APS-C sensor can be used as an advantage here). Interacts nicely with Sony's Xperia Z.

In the meanwile on the look for D810 or a future higher resolution camera which handles best with mostly Nikkor lenses.

Nikon D810, Df and D7200 which will be sold tomorrow (more or less for the same reasons Lance explained).
Nikon 1 V1, V2 and V1 IR converted.

A couple of years back I had a nice collection of AI-s lenses (all chipped by Dr. Lens).
When I upgraded from D700 to D800E I sold them all as I was not able to MF with the D800E.
Now with the Df I regret that sell-off and I will get a few MF lenses again. Never too old to learn.  :'(

Just curious what cameras you guys and girls are using nowadays?

Though I still consider myself a Nikon shooter my only camera at the moment is the Sony a7S which serves my current needs as a travel / hiking camera perfectly with it small size, high ISO low pixel sensor, electronic first curtain (I shoot a lot at slow shutter speeds) and the capability to use lenses with several lens mounts which currently includes Nikon F, Canon EF, Leica M and LTM, Contax G, Sony FE, etc but I plan to thin the herd a bit in the coming months.

So, what are you using these days?

Hmmm . . . I've slowly graduated to having multiple cameras across multiple formats, and multiple brands.

FX:  Currently D800, but an A7RII is on the way.  D800 is great for tripod and AF work, but terrible with my manual focus glass.  Also, bulky and heavy.  Trying to make the A7RII the light weight kit by getting 15/4.5III & 40/1.4 Voigts. (both M mounts) and using my 90/3.5 APO CV and 180/4 APO CV in f-mount - pretty wide to pretty long in 4 lenses and a small-ish camera.  Likely use on of my 16/3.5 AI's along with this setup just to get that 170 deg. FOV.

m43:  Panasonic GX7 and Olympus EM-1.  Love the UI and external ergonomics of the GX7, but it can't focus my 150/2 Oly to save itself nor my 135/2 APO Zeiss due to lack of full-time IBIS.  BUT, the GX7 is my go to lens to use with my other m43 lenses.  Hate the EM-1  UI and external ergonomics, but the PDAF is great and full time IBIS is excellent.  I have a Pany G5 for my daughter and a Pany GH3 I bought for remote video for work purposes.

Need highest DR, AF, or tripod work:  D800
Need light weight and on-the go FX:  A7RII
Need more casual shots/vidoe with excellent m43 primes:  GX7
Need to focus 43 lenses or longer primes:  EM-1

I'm hoping the GX8 comes out with full time IBIS and can focus 43 lenses much better than the GX7 - then I can sell the EM-1 and pare things down a bit.

And I do realize I'm spoiled (equipment-wise) compared to most photographers, but I find I really like having the right tool for the situation and am willing to spend some cash on it.  I have very few other "toys" otherwise :)

D300: Main DSLR

D200: IR Converted (720)

Coolpix A: Compact tag along or wide angle second body.

Coolpix AW100: For wet situations.

FE2: Family snapshots (usually mounted is a 28mm f/3.5 Type K)

L35AF: Compact for film snapshots.

FM2: Not used as often as the FE2, but I intend to start using this one more often if I can ween myself off of autoexposure.

The beauty of photography is that it makes time stand still - so yer D700 is more than up to the stilling task 😊

Currently I use a Fuji X-E1 with the XF 18-55/2.8 - a really nice combo imo. A somewhat slow camera, but I mostly shoot static subjects so it's just fine for my use. I find the post processing of X-Trans raw files a bit challenging at times, but overall I like the output I can obtain.

I have a collection of old MF Minolta lenses from the film days - with an adapter they work nicely with the Fuji.

Prior to the Fuji I had a Nikon D7000 for a very short while. I still have a D40 that works well, but I hardly ever use it.

Film gear: two Minolta X-700 and a srT101. Shot some film last summer just for fun.

Medium size Mirrorless - Sony NEX-7, considering a move to Fuji XT-1. or maybe Sony A-6000 to take advantage of lenses I have.

Small - Sony Rx-100 (mk 1), iphone 5s   ;-)

Thanks,

Two D800 bodies, sometime also use a D3 but mainly the D800 does it (sailing and yacht photography) - its just great to have this dynamic range avail in the post processing. For the kids though I mainly use the D3 - there are times when the "800" is too slow.

I used one of those many years ago. Attached is a self-portrait to show the camera in action. I decided after some weeks that a technical view camera would suit me better, so switched over to an Arca-Swiss F-line 6x9 system instead that I had for many years and added 4x5" bellows and holders to as well. Plus I could do panormas in-camera using a 6x12 roll film holder.

A younger - and not so fierce - bear in a favourite habitat. This is "my" local river, by the way. Thus if you fell into it, not a far distance back to home and dry clothing.

Aaahhh, the beauty and the beast fishing.

I had thought about 4x5 and also about something more compact like Hasselblad ... but decided the GWX with its movements and all its accessories was a good compromise between the two. I haven't used it enough to decide if the compromise was a good choice or not. I am not a landscape shooter ... but dream of being one some day. How did a not-so-fierce bear get along with the GWX and what deficiencies did you discover which made you dump the camera?

As latter years septagenerian, carry weight increasingly becomes an issue, so I've downsized from a D700 to a d750 and that's my principal body for domestic travel and shooting (there have been sporadic NAS attacks in between [a D80, D200, D300 and D610, all now long gone]), where I'll usually have the benefit of my car as transport and I can easily accomodate a tripod and a small handful of nikkors.  For out-of-country travel, where I have generally avoided personal driving and, instead, accomodated myself and budget to rail and air transport, a few years ago I moved to Panasonic M43 gear, at present the GX7 with the "old"14-45 kit lens and the 15mm f/1.7 Summicron, the second of which, by the way, I brought as my sole body and lens on a three-week Paris and Ireland at this time last year, and never missed a longer lens or a lens assortment.

When I purchased my D750, I did make the choice between the Df and the 750, and the 750 won at the margin based on budget and, more narrowly on ergonomics.  I must write, however, that if the Df had offered a "conventional" old school ground glass screen, I would made that choice instead.  As a really old timer and former Nikon Ftn, Nikon S3 and Leica Ms 2 and 3 user who never used an autofocus lens until I picked up my first digital camera, I'd be really happy with a digital Nikon F, but I know that there'd not be a commercial market for the few of us that would enjoy and use such a gem, with the hybrid benefit of Lightroom post processing.

As a lad, my dad had several F3's and two Fe's and two Hasselblads. Unfortunately, typically boy, I squandered a lot of learning opportunities, and the photography bug only really bit about 5 years ago.

Started with a D100 and 28-105AF-D. In 2012 I bought a D7000 and 80-400 AF-D as a wedding present for "us".
Now I have upgraded to the D750.

Lenses have of course been multiplying all the time, as I am a hoarder. Current line-up, in focal length order:
Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 VC
Nikkor 18-70mm AF-S Dx
Nikkor 24mm f2.8 AI-S
Nikkor 24-120mm f4 VR
Nikkor 28-105mm AF-D
Nikkor 50mm f2 AI-S
Nikkor 55mm f2.8 Micro AI-S
Nikkor 80-200mm f4.5 AI-S
Nikkor 80-400 AF-D
Nikkor 105mm f4 Micro AI-S
Sigma 180mm f3.5 macro
Nikkor 300mm f4 AF-S
Nikkor 500mm f4 AF-S VR
Nikkor TC1.4EII

I tend to have a Nikon Df and Contax G2 with me when I am doing the "day job". I am using a pair of D810s for a couple of long term projects. If I just want to go and have some fun I pick up my Hasselblad 503c/x.  I just traded my D300 for a D7200 for when I want a little more reach and don't want to use a TC. Kicking around and not used as much as they deserve are Contax G1, Fuji GX680III, Fuji GA645Zi, Linhof Technikardan S 45, Nikon F5 and Nikon D70i converted to 720 IR all of which get taken out 4-6 times a year.

I have also been know to take the odd snap with my mobile phone.

Just got a D7200.
Big excellent surprise, it looks like  it makes a jump up in quantum efficiency. (And also read noise is lower than previous models),  I would not have thought either of this is still possible.

I heavily use D7100 and D800 . A D7000 is still in use. Also got a Sony Rx 100 III , a 1" shirt pocket camera with built in EVF.
The "always with me" waterproof Pentax W20  is pushed out by the iPhone on dry ground.

D750.  I've always been a one tool kinda man so I get rid of anything but my one favorite tool.  Having always shot with only a 50mm, it was easy to switch systems whenever I felt like it.  Started with a D70 w/50mm 1.8d, moved to a Minolta 7D w/Sigma 30mm 1.4 for the IS and wider FOV, then to a Canon 5D w/Nikkor 50mm 1.2 ai-s for better low light/thinner DOF/bigger VF and now, after a hiatus, the D750 with the Nikkor 50mm 1.2 ai-s again.  I am now, for the first time, trying things other than a 50mm.  So, I guess I am setting down roots with Nikon finally.  The performance of the D750 is just so satisfactory that I can't see switching brands again.  It can only get better . . . I hope!

I couldn't see myself buying a new body unless this one craps out completely, a film era sized VF makes it onto a DSLR (had a Pentax MX that puts every DSLR I've seen to utter shame in this department   :'( ), Nikon gets IBIS or a hybrid optical/evf, or DR and ISO gets improved by 3+ stops.

Completely missed that transition Akira, an interesting and brave move.

And the main question of course is if all is well in Olly land?

Jan, I'm pretty happy with the move.  Actually E-M5 Mk II was the very first Oly digital that made me interested.  Nothing is perfect, so I woudn't say that "all" is well in Oly land.  But I've found more things I like here: lesser bulk, more opportunity to take out, very fast and accurate auto focus that reduces the frustration of focus error, excellent magnifying function of the viewfinder for MF, way-better-than-expected IBIS which significantly reduces the need to raise the ISO, sharp standard (25/1.8 ) lens that only need to stop down to f2.8 to achieve corner-to-corner sharpness, etc.

Until Panasonic GF5 released in 2012, the AF struggled in dim conditions (like in the restaurants), but I haven't had any problem of low light AF with E-M5 Mk II so far, which is a pleasant surprise.

Also, I have been big fan of 4:3 format since I had used Fuji GW680.  There are a lot of more stuff to explore, especially the focus bracketing function newly added by the firmware 2.0.

That said, nothing is perfect, of course.  The m4/3 system totally lacks small superwide primes.  CV and Kowa offers lenses in this category but they are bulky MF lenses.  Also, it would be less suitable for the extensive action photography like sports and wildlife which I'm not into for myself, although I enjoy the posts of this kind by other members like you here.

FWIW, all my images of Tokyo meet up posted here are taken exclusively with the E-M5 Mk II and 25/1.8 combo:

A number of reasons.  I should first mention that my primary supporting reason to get a good camera again was that our band has things we need one for, and that I have bandmates who are not interested in photography that use it here and there.  While I do love photography, I would not have been able to justify the expense (and boy are cameras expensive!) if it didn't serve the band.

Better AF - I never use AF, but my bandmates need it.  Which is why I have an AF zoom that I never touch personally.  The D750 AF is especially better in low light, where live shows and band things tend to happen a lot.

Control - I started on a D70, so the traditional control scheme is anything but familiar to me.

Video - We will be using it for music videos.  Which I should be figuring video out for, but rarely even remember it does video to be honest.

ISO/DR - While the Df technically has less noise, I find them to be equal when down-sampling is brought into the picture.  Combined with the ability to lift the shadows more on the D750, the D750 can be pushed an extra stop in low light venues without falling behind in IQ.  An extra stop means a lot between iso 8000 and 16000.

Grip - It's not uncommon for me to be holding my camera when a crowd of sweaty people suddenly slams into me, so having a deep and secure grip really feels nice.  Frankly, I'd be scared of the Df flying out of my hands sometimes.

My only experience with a traditional camera design was a Pentax MX which was really nice to hold, and I would switch to such a design quickly if it's capabilities met my needs and the viewfinder was that good.  Sadly, no DSLRs is, and I don't see that happening with AF being the standard.

Akira, Tristin: Thank you very much for your enlighting contributions.

For me the Olympus system is interesting on the long end. The 1.8/75mm and the 2.8/40-150mm Pro are the lenses that would complement my Nikon Wide to Midrange well.

Currently I do not feel any urge to shoot tele, But with 2 x EM1 and the 40-150mm I would feel safe to shoot sports.

You are welcome, Frank.  However, you would need to keep it in mind that mirrorless cameras are not suitable for the action like sports if you do bursts.

Switched from a D300s to an Olympus OM-D EM1 (paired with mostly the 12-40 2.8, Samyang 7.5mm fisheye).

While I still own the D300s, I have not touched it for nearly a year (have had the EM1 for just over 1.5 years). Main reason for the switch was due to wanting to reduce weight. The recent addition of the electronic shutter with the new firmware update has been good too!

Nikon d750, recently added the grip. Much better for low light photography than the d700 that I still keep and use with grip and en-el4 batteries. On top of the low light and the ability for much better recovery and push in post, the 750 has a significantly lower shutter noise, a big plus for theaters. Wifi file transfer -I didn´t know I would ever actually use it, but I did- I´m very happy. Was only 1666 € new around feb this year.

My first DSLR was D70 which helped me to  switch gradually from Nikon film cameras and medium format. Currently I have the D3 and the D800 (no grip to keep it light and small) for my jobs. Beside that I have the Df  as a walk around/travel/fun/back up camera. I also have the Ricoh GR when going really light or just keep it in B&W mode.

Since writing this I added a refurbished D7100 body (at $499, the next lowest cost of my camera bodies!) to the family of cameras. I got the RRS L-bracket for it (first time I tried an L-bracket) that is pretty well designed and to my surprise slightly improves the balance; I expected the opposite. If CNX2 had been supporting the follower I might have gotten that, but that together with the price point made it for me. A better focusing screen is on the way.

  • Nikon D5100 is my main body. Looking for DX alternative with better viewfinder in near future. I am currently getting along with it due to the installed Katzeye all matte screen.
  • Nikon 1 AW1 for underwater/snorkling use and fun around/at water. It is also carried along with the main body on most trips for quick access shots/"my point and shoot" and when large depth of field is required. Further used for exploration with FT-1 and my manual focus lenses for narrow angle of view.
  • IR body : D40x with Lifepixel IR-720nm conversion and Katzeye all matte screen.
  • I still keep my D200 with Katzeye all matte screen for backup/special use.
  • Underwater - scuba diving (sadly not much active these days) body is still my Nikon F4 with action finder in its state of the art Subal Procase housing.
  • Still keeping my Nikon F2.

D3s - main and favourite
D800E - good for landscape/macro/detail
V1 - A silly joke
V1 IR converted - A less silly joke, some good results, but lenses not so good in IR
F100 - A film body that can use all my Nikon lenses
Mamiya RZ67 Pro II - Big film when I hang out with film friends

D810
D3S
OM-D E-M1
Df

Just sold my roll film scanner, microscope and lenses, some macro lenses, most of my Ais-Nikkors and found out where my money has gone over the years. Also noticed that no one can use this many camera bodies so one of them has to go also. The D810 has the most use, no one wants to pay anything decent for the excellent D3s, the E-M1 is very handy, so the very little used black Df body will have to go. Sigh.

I use my d810 for about 90% of my photography. after trying a lot of other gear, I always come back to it as the most well rounded camera with the best image quality.

I still have a soft spot for a few Fuji lenses, and still have an x-e2, but have been in the process of divesting myself of that system. It was an interesting experiment!

A Nikon J4 gets used occasionally, and of course the iPhone (6s)

Thinking about adding a d5500 for occasions when the flippy touch screen, a bit less weight, and the "crop factor" might be useful.

These days, as opposed to those days?
Film cameras. Only Nikon manual focus film cameras.
SLRs: motorized, meterless F, motorized F2AS,motorized F3P, motorized FM-2, and motorized FA, plus a small mountain of Nikon, and third-party manual focus lenses.
Rangefinders: Nikon S3s, SP, and CV R2S Bessa, plus a small mountain of Nikon and CV lenses.
I remember reading about some new image capturing system about twenty years ago: Digi..something or other. Is it still around?

I've had the D800 for more than 3 years and have also built a Fuji system in parallel.
Both systems are built around 5 primes each, covering the FF equivalent of 20mm to 85mm.
In day to day shooting I've used the Fuji system more. The D800 will be traded with a new D750 tomorrow.
I'm really looking forward to this move as I expect better AF performance and suitability for event photography.

I think for me too!  I have a love - hate relationship with the Df, mostly love. I have never found the external controls easy to operate, I always take the camera down, push the little lock buttons, and move the knobs. I love the images and love the size/weight of the camera and I love the sensor... so overall amazing!!  I haven't handled a D750 yet.

The D750 and I had an instantaneous disagreement. My hands could not handle the narrow grip well.  It is very different from the bigger D3/D4-class models in terms of handling. I just deleted the model from my short list and never looked back.

The monocoque design started with D5500 significantly changed the body design which made the grip much narrower and deeper, compared to the previous models.  Some like the new grip and some don't.

The D750 is a very good camera but it falls in the 'almost' camera for me just like the D7100 and its' buffer.  It probably doesn't matter to most people but why in the heck have 1/4000 vs 1/8000 but when I am shooting 1/4000 at iso 400! Why in the heck can I not have more speed.  Sure, I would like the 51pts cover more area but I can live with that.  The 39 vs 51 is my only real complaint about the Df.  It is all about Nikons business strategy .
The Sony a7II is fun with adapted lenses, great MF aids and rarely get an unsharp image but the D750 is a better all rounder for what, and how, I shoot  :).
Just my wee moan  ;)

Yeah, I *really* wish the D750 grip wasn't so narrow.  The D750 feels like it was made for small, slender hands . . . not mine.  If only I could mix some of Canon's ergonomics (and rotary wheel) into a Nikon body.  A man can dream.

Yes it is not a D3/D4 class. The battery grip however makes a big difference, to a greater extent that the d700 with or without grip. It is good to have alternatives. I´m of course talking from the point that this particular camera model hits a sweet spot for my main kind of shooting so take it acordanly.

My primary camera is a Nikon D800. I use the AF-ON button for auto focus and the camera is always in AF-C focus mode. I use the AE-L/AF-L button for FV Lock (Flash Value for run and gun) and the Function Button for selecting non-CPU, manual focus lenses and for exposure lock. I've kept almost all of the lenses I bought from 1978 to date. I sold all those I bought from 1970 to 1976 as most were single coated. A camera like the D750 as good as it is lacks a dedicated AF-ON button so it's one button short and not the camera for me. I use shutter speeds above 1/4,000 and I'm spoiled by cameras with a 1/8,000. I still have my D300s and use it occasionally. The interface is almost the same as the D800 but the D800 is a bit better. I'd like a D4s image sensor and electronics in a D810 sized body, say a D810H.

I have a glut of 35mm film cameras. I wouldn't mind shooting a little ISO 400 B&W from time to time but my darkroom no longer has a sewer line. I'd also like to shoot a little 4x5 B&W. I can't see a day where I'll ever shoot color film again.

Anyway most of the time I'm using a D800.

Dave

Some enterprising designer in China (or legendary DIY sort, from proximately more northwesterly enviorns  ;) )should jump on the opportunity to introduce an after-market solution to the expressed ergonomic constraints. It could effectively follow how Nikon managed its own in house solution around the FG; that venerable, diminutive street fighter of the film age. Some liked its auxiliary grip, some could live without it. And did! Which was rather the appeal of having an option. But less I be accused of preaching to the choir, I'm sure we all can site our own contemporary examples wherein similar or innovative OEM and third party solutions are currently available for the many wafer thin "smart this" or "i-that" and the illogically mismatched mirrorless [sic] lightweights supporting gargantuan lenses (not designed for them). C'mon kids! Get out the Crayolas and design something! (And with that, I imagine hearing the whirring of Dremel™ tools as they put the finishing touches on a 3D printer's rendering.)

Nikon D810 whenever possible. I specialize in garden photography and plant portraits. The D810 ist great for that.
Nikon D4 when light is difficult. Since I use a 5K display for developing the RAW files I sometimes regret the D4 not having more pixels. There is hardly any leeway for cropping without your picture getting smaller than your display at 1:1.
The weight is not so much of a problem when photographing in gardens but it is when traveling.

I think that the hand grip section of the camera should be interchangeable, maybe even posdible to custom manufacture or custom mold, like some pistol grips. As it is now, each and every camera model is "one size fits all".

Well, the problem of Nikon bodies is that there is ususally a space for the battery or the capacitor for the integrated flash in the grip.  The latter is about the size of an AA or AAA battery which is pretty large.  It should be difficult to make the grip to be interchangeable.

I love this camera and haven't used my D800 & D700 since I started using the Df.
The Df feels very natural to me and reminds me of a cross between my old F3 and F4 in handling.
I'm sure I'll be using both of the d800 & d700 again, but for now I'm really enjoying the Df along with some sillky smooth AI & AI-S lenses!
Thanks Bjørn for bringing me back to basics!

I'm not sure I understand your concern, from an industrial design perspective. I'm not arguing for the removal or interchangeability of an existing grip. Rather for adding something to it to attain the desired result; ease of handling. If should be relatively simple to sheathe the grip in some manner, effectively making it thicker as needed.

If not for concerns regarding voiding warranties and such, I could handily solve this problem for myself. At the very least, there are any number of industrial grade adhesive-backed rubber strips that can be applied to add some girth to a grip. (Say that, five times fast!) In fact, I used to appropriate  ;) surplus rubber strips like those mentioned, from a factory I worked in, for the purpose of protecting the bottom plates on my F & F2 from the results of rough handling in the field. Worked at treat, too! They were flexible and easily cut; conformed to the contours of whatever apparatus they were applied; relatively impervious to the elements (they had a military "spec" rating) and could be removed cleanly if necessitated.

What I wouldn't want to do right off is risk sinking the bit of a Dremel™ tool into a fully charged capacitor, as I drill a hole, or two (I should live so long) into a camera for the purpose of affixing an auxiliary grip. Even drilling into an exhausted, or discharged, capacitor would be unwise if I had hope of maintaining a fully functioning camera. I wouldn't -- in fact I don't -- recommend anyone try it. Let Nikon think it through and come up with a better design scheme -- next time!

I shoot family events (portraits, some groups), birds in FL, and then a range of everything.

Has been: D300 with 50 f/1.8G for people and 300 f/4 for birds. (I've been pleased with the images.)

Now Sony A6000 with Sony/Zeiss 55mm or 24mm for people. (Size & weight advantage, composing on the flip-out screen is surprisingly handy, and 24MPx has been an eye-opener. Tough love ahead for the D300.)

Few days ago I mentioned that I will trade my D800 for a new D750. My major issue with the D800 was AF inaccuracy, specially under artificial lighting and generally with wide aperture primes. Being a prime only photographer this has bugged me for a long time.
My first impressions are that the D750 is a lot better in this respect. Also I like the handling overall. Looking forward to using the DSLR more again.

My current equipment
Nikon D750; AF-S 20mm f/1.8; AF-S 35mm f/1.8; AF-S 60mm f/2.8 Micro; AF-S 85mm f/1.4
Fuji X-E2; 14mm f/2.8; 16mm f/1.4; 23mm f/1.4; 35mm f/1.4; 56mm f/1.2

Both systems are almost equivalent in focal lengths. The next lens will be the Nikkor 24mm f/1.8. This will round out my D750 system.

We should accept the cameras one uses are expressions of usefulness for the individual not a confirmation of superiority of one choice over another.

After 2 years of heavy use, I still prefer the Df to most other options. Does that mean the Df is perfect? Of course not. Just that my response to the Df is synergetic in a manner many alternatives lack.

Another enjoyable camera is the Fuji S3 Pro (I have the 'Limited Edition' UVIR). Enjoyable despite the camera is quaint (nearly 10 years old), with a poor viewfinder, eats batteries, has the worst LiveView implementation ever, a dubious and trumped-up "12 MPix" resolution, and RAW files almost impossible to process with modern software. Still, I bond with the camera and have taken some of my best photographs ever with the Fuji.

My old and trusty FM-2 is only used for 1 roll per year. But I still love it's simplicity, compactness and build.
I've had it fully serviced by Nikon Switzerland two years ago and it's ready to serve many more years to come.

The Df certainly brings back some of the controls we used to have.
Should there be a next gen Df I'd like to see a hybrid optical / electronic viewfinder.
I'm not sure if this would be feasible with a reflex concept.

When organist Marcel Dupré was asked by US journalists what shoes he would use for playing the organ, his terse answer was "mine".

There is indeed a deeper meaning : not "mine" as a marker of property, but appropriation. Also applicable here.

Thanks for the link Tom,

A hybrid viewfinder would be the best of both worlds for me. It may add quite a bit to the cost tough.
Let's hope Nikon have some breakthrough products up their sleeves for the 100th anniversary in 2017.
This could well be the point in time to introduce a mirrorless system and new mount.
It certainly is a tricky one for Nikon who admirably preserved the F mount to this time.
So how can you introduce something new without pissing off millions of loyal users?
I'm sure this has robbed the sleep of engineers and marketeers alike.

Currently the D4S and D800E form the main pair of bodies, D4S when  weight and size does not matter and speed is needed, D800 E for everything that deserves high resolution but also for telephotography with quick switch option to DX mode. Still have the D700 in use for walkaround, and the D300 as a travel camera when I am not willing take much care. A modified D200 serves for UV/IR purposes.
A Df might take the D700s role soon.

D700's
Update. Second hand market in the Netherlands approved for selling the D700 compared to the beginning of 2015. Was able to sell them around the purchased price.
Replaced them by a nearly mint Nikon Df  and Nikon D800E which came on the market at attractive prices.

It's a very good combination to my idea; the versatility and flexibility of the  Df and the sharp, fast and high resolution D800E. And both being smaller than the D700 they fit perfectly in one bag.

Imho D800E is more lightweight than the D700 but not smaller
Df of course is

Thank you for the addition, I already sold the D700 before I got the D800E, so it must have been my feeling  ;)

Kodak DCS760, D300 and D700. The old Kodak beast still works well, but it is heavy and the battery packs needed for extended use makes it even worse.

DSLR- Nikon Df, I still keep a Nikon D1, Nikon E3, and Kodak DCS200ir all in working order.

digital RF- Leica M9, M Monochrom, and M8. The latter- always use in "Raw" mode with M8RAW2DNG.

Mirrorless- EPM1, EP2, and full-spectrum converted EP2.

After a lot of stray in the past months, I settled on an FX DSLR by switching back to Nikon.  Now my main all-round kit is D750 and AF-S50/1.8G.  Both are calibrated at Nikon Service, and the discrepancy between the AF module and the image plane that I had suffered when I used DSLRs last time (D7000 and D610) is finally gone now.

Along with the versatile 50/1.8, I enjoy shooting with the venerable Nikkor-Q C 200mm/f4.0 tele and Ai Nikkor 20mm/4.0 superwide.  Both cope admirably with the 24MP FX sensor.  The "green dot" of the calibrated D750 is very reliable even with the 200mm lens.

So there is room for a 105/2.5 in your kit :)

Akira. Until we see real results from the D5 we can safely assume that the 24M sensor is the best horse in
Nikon's Stable. Great resolution and wonderful tonality.

An a7RII was added to the a7S, a bigger brother in every sense of the word; bigger body, bigger grip, bigger viewfinder, 30 more MP's, stabilized sensor, bigger AF spread with a couple hundred Phase Detect AF points, etc, etc.

Autofocus is so much faster compared to the a7S, which is no surprise as this was the main reason to buy the a7RII. With the 35/1.4 FE focus is instant and a lot more reliable in low light.

ISO performance seems to be very good at ISO6400 which should be enough for my intended use with the mentioned f/1.4 lens.

Retired and sold some old camera's and been looking around for a Nikon in the 5... or 7... class. After numerous checking and testing the conclusion was the D600. The ridiculous low price of a nearly mint D600 and it's very high IQ were the main reasons.

As I photograph many different subjects and in various ranges of the spectrum, I need and use many different cameras.

The Nikon Df is my main workhorse these last years, but for visible work I also employ D3X, D3S, D800, and there is the D500 on order hopefully allocated for delivery in the first batch in April. Much of the mundane product shot-for-web in studio is with a old and still fully functional D2H. For the unpredictable weather, 1 Nikon AW, for leisure 1 Nikon V1 or even a AW100 Coolpix. In UV, Panasonic GH-2 (mainly for UV video), Nikon D3200, D600, and Fuji S3 Pro; for IR, Fuji S3 Pro, Nikon D5300, D40x, D200, and the Panasonics.

I try to convince myself to like and accept a Sony A7 in order to deploy my dear old S-mount Nikkors but so far not with much success. The A7 also takes on some of the exotic lenses in my arsenal together with a NEX-3, Panasonic GF-1, GH-2, and some specially modified Panasonics and Nikon V1 (these with altered mount to M42 so I can put the strangest optical contraptions on them).

I guess the above indicates I have a very wide view of what constitutes a "good" [digital] camera for me. In the film days, the combination of Nikon F or F2 [Titan] plus a Nikon S3/SP was my preferred choice, unless I did large-format work with Arca F-Line view cameras. Also have Hasselblad Xpan, Bessa R2C, and if I search the premises, probably an ancient Leica or Contax.

Well, theoretically, yes.  Idealistically I would want an Ai-modified 9-blade Sonnar type.  (Do I require too much?!)

Yes, I think 24MP sensor is today's best compromise between resolution and low light performance. Also, it is not too demanding on the vintage lenses.

Sure the best bank for the buck currently. Some of these go for below 700 Euros ... and Nikon will replace the shutter unit free of charge if you ask them to ...

I am extremly happy with that cam. Only the AF-unit leaves a lot to wish for ... anyway. I use her with MF glass most of the time currently!

Perfect AF doesn't exist, perfect MF does ;)   Yes, I am positively surprised by it's speed, quality and versatility. The 24mp files are very clean. Comparing specs with the D750 it's not far off, DxO*  even rates it higher.       *for what's it worth...

Like and will keep all of them.

My workhorse is the Nikon D7100 that I use for all types of photography (nature, people, events, flash,...).
The Coolpix A is my compact camera and with a SB400 it is relatively flexible. I gave it a Panda outfit and while it looks very nice, it gets too much attention ruling it allmost out as a street camera.
The Sony A7 is my dedicated MF lens camera. It really shines with my Nikkors, Contax Zeiss and Zuiko lenses (sometimes still struggle getting the colours to my liking vs. my Nikons).
My recently acquired J5 will very likely become my street camera. Small, quick and unobtrusive.

A Fujifilm X-Pro2.

Still Fujifilm X-E1 but looking forward to read about Bob's and Gary's experiences with the X-pro2 sensor :)

It's going to take me a while to get used to a new camera, but so far the X-Pro2 is everything I was hoping for and I'm sure I'll like it. Since I've let a couple of generations go by before I added a body, some things I notice may already have been addressed in earlier models.

The write speed is about a light year ahead of the X-E1 as is the AF. The new sensor seems great with good dynamic range and crisp images. Color is great, but I'm not sure who to give credit: processor or sensor. I've been shooting a bunch of images around the house in available light at ISO 12,800 with pleasing results. 12,800, good grief.

The Electronic Shutter will be an interesting feature. I can see this as a godsend for candid shots, street, and quiet places. It makes me feel like a spy. Ha. The shutter sound (no doubt fabricated by human factors engineers) is pleasing.

The camera has a very solid feel, though it seems a bit blocky. The right hand grip is just enough to give confidence to my fingers. They seem to have found a balance between light weight and a totally solid product. It gives a sense of confidence that this is a serious tool.

I think a lot of people are going to be very happy with this camera. Maybe not everyone that tries it, but many will.

These are just my impressions, no pragmatic technical examinations, from a very short time of use and I haven't been able to get out much since the weather has been crappy and my wife is recovering from surgery. This camera may end up being the one I use most of the time.

I also have a few film cameras that I will post about one day because I like them all.

Many thanks Bob for sharing your first impressions. I'm primarily a raw shooter but do frequently use the camera JPG's of the X-E1 - especially if I'm lazy or the shot is of less importance. However, the JPG output from the new sensor/processor I would expect to have improved considerably compared to X-E1.
I don't know if it's too soon to say anything final about the X-Pro2 output when processing raw files outside camera - various raw conversion software might not yet support the camera.

Sorry to hear that about your wife - best wishes for her recovery!
