Received my IR-converted Panasonic GF1 yesterday. Looks nice and as shown below, it can use the EL-Nikkor 50mm f/.8 enlarger lens with focus from near 1:1 to infinity. Plus a plethora of other odd lenses of course.
Already tested that the EL-Nikkor 50/2.8 has no IR hotspot.

How much can one of those creatures cost with IR conversion?

I paid 150 GP for the camera + conversion with internal 720nm filter. The seller did a good job as far as I can ascertain. The camera was hardly used and looks like new. Quick delivery across the North Sea as well :)

Spring has arrived at the local wetlands. A luxuriant stand of Yellow Flag Iris pseudacorus is rendered vere bright in IR. The invasive floating liverwort Ricciocarpos natans already blankets open water areas - it's invasive dispersal over the last years has been staggering in my region.

Obviously you have used the camera today. And you created an image with an apocalyptic touch.
-
Why do I think this is interesting?
Because
a) ALDI did not advertize at all for decades
b) ALDI sends a kind of "sociopolitical message" here stating they care for all which means they care for the poor
c) they do not go for an official billboard here but book a semilegal service to gain "street credibility"
d) Albert-Heijn-aesthetics copied
all very unusual

The meaning of "DOF".
There is just a single plane of focus and everything else is an illusion of rendered details. The object is a rear lens cap, of yellow colour. Thus the crescent shape of the background is for real.

On the other side, why not? The focusing likely is very slow, like in the older days, and that might, just might, make taking the photo more enjoyable??
Besides, enlarger lenses tend to be quite affordable items.

How do
I * Frank permanently get rid of bracken?
Repeated removal of new stems and sections of rhizome will weaken and eventually eradicate bracken. Position your fork at the base of the stems to minimise soil disturbance. Cut or crush stems – damage fronds by cutting them back or crushing them while shoots are still young and tender.
*I happen to like Bracken in all its subspecific variability

I found the tiny Kyoei W.Acall 35mm f/3.5 M39 hidden in a cupboard. I vague recalled it was useless for UV (the M42 version is very fine for this), so many years ago I was about to throw the lens away but didn't. Apparently it likes IR if nothing else.
-
On the other side, why not? The focusing likely is very slow, like in the older days, and that might, just might, make taking the photo more enjoyable??
It has been good fun adapting the lens and trying to use it. The hardest part of focusing on a moving subject (my son will not hold still :) ) is the narrow ring on the helicoid that is right up against the camera body.
Besides, enlarger lenses tend to be quite affordable items.
I'm going to need a bigger cupboard :o

I wonder if the AOV looks too wide for an equivalent of 70mm?
It's an image in portrait mode and lots of vanishing lines. So appears perhaps wider than expected? The 35mm Kyoei behaves like any 35mm and covers nicely FX. It was designed and made in an era without the horrible illusion of "crop factors", thankfully. When I used 8x10" camera back then, the 120mm was superwide !! On my 4x5" view camera, the Schneider 58mm lens acted in a similar fashion and its very short draw necessitated a sunken lens board and special bellows for wide-angle. The 65mm f/4 Nikkor was just barely tolerable (in terms of operation, pictorial results were excellent),
By the way, I was listening to "Vanishing Blue" before posting and hence decided the image should have an appropriate colour scheme (originally, it was red, black, and yellow).

Thank you for the details. The pseudo-wideangle effect would be the part of the optical illusion. :)

The EL-Nikkor 50mm f/2.8 can also do close-up ... hand-hold captures can be quite satisfactory in terms of composition. perhaps not so much in traditional terms of image sharpness etc. However, who cares? The maxim "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept” trumps all other criteria any time.

All staff of the Botanical Museum today were occupied generating a makeshift collection of surplus samples for the big "Flooding Disaster" test tomorrow. The samples will be flooded to various degree and the staff trained to sort quickly what can be saved or not. Like a war-time triage.
On a scale of severity, fire ranks highest, then flooding (or more likely, a burst water pipe or roof leaks), and the third danger is insect attack. They have very good control of the latter, whilst the two higher up on the scale requires training and realistic tests. However, like most museums world-wide in which paper-based collections are stored, in the case of a fire a large part if not all of the valuable collections may be destroyed. If the fire is rapidly brought under control, however, water damage needs to be mitigated and thus the triage training is required.
Some of the younger girls brought their kids who were extremely happy to dunk old books into water-filled buckets.

File size is OK but try to use a lower pixel size ;)
Most viewers benefit by slightly lower pixel numbers, but better jpg rendition. Use 1500-2000 pix max on the long side and then jpg level 10-12 usually will keep the file storage size less than 2MB. We want better quality in the rendered web image, not bigger image sizes (pixel dimension) since the latter always will require more hash jpg compression.

Thanks Frank, but these are not water droplets, but actually the result of the out of focus bokeh/rendering of the particular industrial lens used. I’ve heard this remark before, but this a live picture: spraying would have scared this animal of! Love to hear that you like the end result though. Ran in to this lens because my, part NG community inflicted GAS, and as such became fascinated by odd lenses (thanks Birna!) Generates amazing resolution around 1:1 (which is was designed for). Can’t post that, but will be happy to share.
-
Here’s another one, shot with the same combination. Due to the large image circle of the printing-NIKKOR of 70 mm, putting this on A PB-4 bellows even allows tilting, allowing the entire animal body to be in the focus, even though its absolutely not parallel to the camera’s focus plane! Like I said: my fascination of the last year! Happy to share

Always traditionally being “teached” to avoid these kind of lightning conditions. But seen through the right eyes Paco, can deliver absolute masterpieces! This is certainly one.
-
Had to look up what you were talking about Frank: Freezer-Spray. I would personally consider the use of that in macro photography of insects as being unethical! The trick of doing this in the real world, free handed, without a tripod or focussing rail is a real sport. No way that you can focus, even your breathing prohibit this. but you can observe your subject continuously being in movement in and out focus for brief moments. You can, train yourself synchronizing the release of the shutter at the short moment your subject snaps in focus though. Admit this is a challenge but how these two shots were made. Takes a long time to train yourself, but eventually you can reach a “reasonable “ hit rate. Don’t have to explain the rewarding feeling when you start mastering this approach….

Jan! I am in awe.

Thanks Ian! The end results can be great, but the (mental) beauty is the photographic process though. A dragonfly tends to sit down on a fixed particular spot, stationary, which, makes these kind of pictures possible. Then suddenly they take off because they have spotted prey vertically above them (seen the different shape of the vertical and front vision fragmented eyes?) literally have seen them returning with prey within seconds and have seen (and took picures of) them devouring what they just catched. I Have developed this technique because it can completely take your mind away at the end of a mentally intensive day. And you can do all of this in your back garden….with bellows, a PB-4 even allowing Scheimphlug without tripod, and certainly, without, just learned, freezing spray (no offense Frank! Admiring your work!) regards, Jan

Love to hear that I did not offend you Frank! Indeed the D500 PF 300 combination is a wonderful macro combination. Personally still prefer the old AFS 300 f/4 with a TC14E II to create “distance” to avoid scaring living subjects. Using my approach you obviously can forget AF though, but with your photographic knowledge I would say: give it a try! Could not reproduce this technique with the early mirrorless like The Z6, purely because of the “lag” of an EVF as compared to the “speed of light” viewfinder feedback of a DSLR like the Df. You should be fine with the D500 in that respect though. The Zf is definitely an improvement in this respect, and will give you IBIS with “ whatever you Mount!”. Over the moon with the 2.0 firmware upgrade right now!
Again, love having joined this community and hope to become part of the discussions that makes this community special. Best, Jan

Attached you see my current setup and your suggested Zf setup, I call "STACK THEM GALORE"...

Yet, too early a praise: the TC-1 does not fit the TC-3 on the latter's female side...

I'm using an extension tube based on TC-14E.2 and there is no problem at all setting up like I suggested. Thus likely the problem is caused by the converted AF-I TC.
If Nikon had allowed their TC14Z be put to the rear on the FTZ/FTZ.2, we would have an easier setup. However, the Z TC models are clamped to a limited set of host lenses, and trying any other combination will not work at all. In fact, the camera might lock up.
However, there is a work-around as you can put an extension ring, like the ones made by Fotodiox, on say the 400/4.5Z, then add the TC14Z. This apparently works because the 400/4.5Z is an admissible lens for the TC14Z/TC20Z, and the extension allows for transmission of electronic information lens-camera.
A potentially better combination in the "direct-Z" case is adding the extension + TC-14/20Z to the 70-180/2.8 Z. Should work just fine. I have to do some field experiments.

This works and you can get beyond 1:1.
However, adding extension to a zoom lens makes focusing quite tricky as any change of focal length will throw the image out of focus and you have to start all over again. Thus I'll stick to the "naked" 70-180 just with the TC14Z added. Then I can get quite close to 1:1 and have a better working distance than with the 105/2.8Z MC,

My strategy is to go for a long focal legth like 400 optical plus extesion.
I know it is difficult to hold steady if I add a TC20 to the 400mm and make it 800 f/9
Plus I do need a bit of saving:
Z9 3500€ + 4.5/400S 2500€ + TC20 Z 500€ + Viltrox extension 60€ = all together 6.560€
Currently I am investing to make a lot of money in the future with some help of higher beings
so in 2027 I might probably be able to afford this kit as "means of production" for my next gen company

Do remember the longer the focal length is, the less impact will a given extension provide. Adding extension to long lenses basically means you lose infinity focus and gain a tad shorter nearer limit.
The reason the 300PF works well with extension is of course it isn't effective 300mm when you focus closer.

My current favorite macro setup. No AF, no VR, variable, but in practice fixed reproduction ratio, but, With fast EVF, IBIS, and, since firmware upgrade 2.0 instant zoom-in zoom-out capability. Since 2.0 even full lens description , aperture etc. In EXIF. PB-4 even enables Scheimpflug, very handy with the, per defenition, shallow DOF in macro. Used this set up to get the fly - and dragonfly pics that I posted. Hand held.
Love the discussion going on about the different set-ups and their in and outs!

Some time ago I bought a PB-4 in very good condition, and before it starts to collect dust, I'll follow your example and take it outside (when the sun shines again). An EL-Nikkor 135mm would probably be a suitable companion on the front.
However, the 400 Z is also a really interesting lens for close-ups. I have already taken some good dragonfly photos with it.

I can only compare the TC-20E III to the TC-301 that I used before it on the AF 300mm f4 and it is considerably better. The limitation of the 2x converters is the loss of 2 f-stops, thus I only use the combination of this converter and the 500PF for astro/planetary photography and occasional lunar/solar shots on the Z/F mount bodies. F/11 otherwise gets too limiting. Regarding your comment on the combination of the 1.4x converter with the Z 400 f/4.5, the consensus out there is that it is capable of high quality images, but if the purpose is birding where one is likely to use the TC the whole time, it is better to go for the Z 600mm or the economic alternative the 500PF. Z-mount lenses cannot be used with the asto cameras that I used for the solar capture, so my choice of the F-mount 500PF was an easy one for me beyond the economic aspects. Here is a 100% crop example of the TC-20 E III and the 300PF on D500 under less than ideal conditions. Focusing was very challenging. (TC-14E III works very well with both the 300 and the 500 PF lenses.)

Thanks, that region at the very upper left edge (more centered if you crop the image to 1/3 of an upper left square) is actually the returning AR4079. AR4099 is the one below it. AR4079 has not been (re)named on the map yet (https://www.spaceweather.com/images2025/26may25/hmi1898.gif (https://www.spaceweather.com/images2025/26may25/hmi1898.gif) ) , but will then likely be called 50xx 41xx then. It will soon rotate to face earth directly, but it was relatively quiet on the last round considering its monstrous size.
Edit: Added the crop
Edit 2, May 27: The AR4079 monster at the upper left has now been officially renamed to AR4100, a nice round number, https://www.spaceweather.com/images2025/27may25/hmi1898.gif (https://www.spaceweather.com/images2025/27may25/hmi1898.gif) (I missed that the second digit also can be incremented). I have seen a comment on Cloudy Nights that it is now doing its 3rd round across the sun.

I just got the Lumix pancake lens 14mm f/2.5 for my IR GF1 cameras. It's a good lens and does well in IR; hardly any hot spot can be detected. On the flip side the design has a lot of barrel distortion that becomes quite visible at middle to near distance. Most of the distortion disappears with judicious post processing and probably would have been taken care of in proprietary software or adequate lens profiles.
Anyway, so far I like it as a walk-around IR lens.

Hi Arturo,
maybe you may check the brightness setting of your display? It seems that the histogram of many of your photos is mainly on the left side. No offense meant.

I've been taking a lot of sunset photos lately. That one of the lemon was taken with almost no light, but I'll try to check the histogram. Thank you very much.

Yet another impressive image! The active region right above the AR4079 looks larger and stronger. It's a little bit of relief that it doesn't seem to face directly the earth. :o
Well "brace for impact", a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) from AR4100 happened yesterday and is on its way directly towards us, its effects (Kp7) predicted to hit May 1-2:

So if you still have dark skies, take a look with your camera outside in the coming nights, attached the NOAA prediction map (https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental (https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental) ) for the US.
