Post by: Birna Rørslett on July 01, 2024, 08:46:05
July has arrived :)

Post your "blog" contributions here. No theme (other than what the passage of time creates), no contest implied, a maximum of one picture per day in the actual month for NG Supporters and no more than 8 images per month for NG members. Enjoy!

Endive and chicories are slightly different from a botanical point of view—endive are annuals and chicories are perennials—but for cooking purposes it's useful to lump all of them (endive, radicchio, treviso, frisee, escarole, etc.) together.

A bad day today :( First, I was detained and interrogated by Lithuanian secret police for nearly an hour. Apparently because in today's search for the free-floating aquatic plant, Water Violet Hottonia palustris, I had by misfortune got too close to the perimeter of a huge power station. With a war raging in Europe that's not the best thing to do. The guys had the typical dead-pan look and attitude, and of course had well-worn guns slung by their side. Also they did not understand a word of English. I have spent better hours than this one, for sure :)

Later the same day, on another potential site for the Water Violet, I tripped and fell into a thicket of thorny brambles. Now my legs sting and bleed like hell.

No Water Violets were found here either, so my search returned nothing. I have had better days. Oh well.

Freedom is always on the other side.

Abandoned houses are not a rare sight in Lithuania, although most are seen in the countryside. This quite modern house was left in an overgrown park-like setting on the perimeter of Kaunas, the second-largest city of the country. All window panes had long gone and deterioration and rot reigned on the inside.

Due to the large maple trees surrounding the dwelling, getting a clear view was impossible so I ended up with the following snapshot,

The Lithuanian Lake Kaunas had a surprise show this evening. Any turtle venturing into this lake would turn out blue,  but perhaps that wasn't what Sting dreamt of in 'The dream of the blue turtles' ?

Cyanobacteria are an ancient life form predating man by hundreds of millions of years. Algal blooms like this make the waters highly toxic and smell foul at the same time.

Around here they are not a bug, they are a feature. (Sorry  ;D)

Insecticides keep them from wrecking potato crops.

This is bizarre!  It looks as if someone threw blue paint into the lake...

It smells worse ... like some out-of-date old and wet paint, but many orders of magnitude worse.

The algae, or technically speaking, cyanobacteria, had of course been there all the time, but the tiny organisms were evenly distributed in the water column and thus not directly visible. Days of extreme heat (to us Nordic people, at least), in conjunction with persistent strong winds and waves brought on a mass bloom and concentrated the cyanobacteria along the shoreline. I've seen algal blooms many times in my days as an aquatic scientist, but never amassed like this. It was spectacular. The "painted" zone stretched up to 50 m wide.

Thank you for the details, Birna.  From the city whose temperature is approaching 40 degree (Celsius) sounds as cool as the color shown by the cyanobacteria...

Many thanks Luc and Hugh. This lens has some magic.
And I wonder if the new Z 35mm f/1.4 has some of this too...
It may not be as clinically sharp as the Z 35mm f/1.8 but maybe with more character - TBC

Yes, it is. And suits the Zf quite well, too, despite it  being heavy.

I often shoot with it at f/2 to make close-ups more dream-like. The depth of field is a thin slice, but details are incredible inside that section.

Doubly envy requires double berries :)

First, Vaccinium vitis-idea ('cowberry') has a slightly tart taste, but will keep for many months after collection. We mix it with sweeteners into juice or jams.  Perfect for veal or deer meat. Very traditional Norwegian cousine.

Second, Vaccinium myrtillus ('hill berry', but called 'blueberries' in Norwegian), has a quite sweet taste on its own. Teeming with anti-oxidants too. Perfect for jams, juice, or dessert. We fill the freezers every autumn.

Both are extremely common and abundant and can be collected just outside our dwelling.

These are known as "wimberries" in the northwest of England. They are a great addition to apple pies.

Related, but not the same. The commercial product is Vaccinium melanocarpus, which is not native to Europe. The berries are light-coloured inside in contrast to the 'wimberry'. which is blue-red to black all through. Compared to "our" berries, these are more bland, but bigger.

Related, but not the same. The commercial product is Vaccinium melanocarpus, which is not native to Europe. The berries are light-coloured inside in contrast to the 'wimberry'. which is blue-red to black all through. Compared to "our" berries, these are more bland, but bigger.

In North America, Vaccinium corymbosum is found natively in the east and available commercially across Canada and the US. These are more bland, too.

Our friends in western Canada and nearby States will have Amelanchier alnifolia. Known to me as Saskatoon berries but also known as western or Pacific serviceberries. I wish that I could get them in Ontario.

Our farmers' market featured this lady, who grows edible mushrooms. We plan to find a few recipes for the "pink oyster" variety. She swears that it tastes a bit like bacon. It is the very pink one close to my daughter.

The one that is being shown is "blue oyster."

PTGui usually is very robust in its stitching, however in this case it choked miserably on my IR images taken with Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75 on my Z5. I do have used the Rodenstock for stitching before, so don't quite understand why PTGui failed. However, in its twisted reality the outcome was at the very least unusual, thus I kept it.

The AF Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 is exactly what I had expected: almost painfully sharp, high contrast, colours are vividly and crisply rendered, bokeh of background is -- for a wide angle lens -- pretty smooth.

And by the way, it survived its first involuntarily drop to the ground.

Mainly Bidens ferulifolia. And f/8, which gets some much needed extra depth-of-field up close. Since it was late evening, light levels had dropped and I could just manage 1/30 sec at ISO 800. Not perfect when there was a breeze, but one has to make do with the cards dealt.

I like the combination of sharp details and painterly rendering offered by the Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75. Here on my Z6.

Up close the image quality rapidly declines measured by the usual yardsticks, however the lens still can provide pleasant outcomes. After all, it is horribly abused way outside its design settings.

At infinity the image quality is surprisingly good, although the circle of acceptable images performance shrinks a lot. Thus the Heligon is better used with high-density pixel cameras such as the Z9, or even the Z30. Both put about the same pixel number inside the acceptable image circle.

A current tangential interest, when I tire of writing up articles for submission and need a break, is just looking for tiny details in Nature. For example, mildewed foliage :) If these are magnified sufficiently, amazing structures appear.

Shown below is such an example, taken from wilting leaves of Norway Maple Acer platanoides. The image shows the cleistotechia (= sporangia with spore-filled sacks inside) and their adornment of twisted appendages. The number and shape of the appendages are important taxonomic characters. This particular species Sawadaea tulasnei has appendages with hook-shaped tips which sometimes are split in two.  Straight capture through my Aspen infinity focus microscope, 10 partial images stacked in Zerene Stacker.

D3 + Zeiss Milvus 50mm. Wonder how it would have turned out with a D4 or D5.

Very nice shot - however there seems to be a huge amount of dust on your sensor...

Dust aside, this is a nice graphical shot that probably would be no differnet on most FX cameras.

Had an annual visit to my doctor yesterday.  Everything is okay for an old man with a bad back.  Had to go to the lab for blood work and to sit around for a while, watching other people.  People are interesting, aren't they?  Almost everyone was absorbed in their telephones.  Used a Fuji X-Pro2 with an adapted Carl Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 Biogon lens (equivalent to about a 35mm focal length on 135 format).  I believe that lens is magical in its rendering in B&W.

Yes, I got that bit - I was the one who commented this to begin with.

The part I can't quite grasp is "...this is a nice graphical shot that probably would be no differnet on most FX cameras."

I can cope with the incorrect spelling etc. but I can't understand the point of mentioning it. This sort of comment can be applied to ANY image - why bother.

Meaning nearly any camera with FX format and a 50mm lens could deliver about the same result. The image is defined and rendered  by the photographer not the gear.

We should bother, because it runs opposite to what the industry wants to tell us - better photos come from better ameras/lenses (sic).

Incorrect spelling == dyslexia

I think Birna refers to Kasper‘s statement "Wonder how it would have turned out with a D4 or D5."

Agreed, lovely capture Kasper and the dust didn't spoil my enjoyment of it.

The D3 is a great camera. I still have lots of photos on my walls printed big that show: Even 12 MP which appear few today mean a lot of resolution if you work with good glass and technique!

In practical terms the 16 MP of my X100T, the 24 MP on diverse bodies and the 45 MP on the D850 do not make a huge difference.

For me the character of the sensor noise is interesting (D500 is my favourite, followed by the D3) and the rendering of the lenses

Nice camera in a nice setting, however where is the lens hood? Such contraptions have saved the day many times in my photographic career.

Very beautiful "bubbles" .. looks like the 2/200 bokehwise

The water surface was quite close, thus the bokeh balls didn't get much enlarged. However, the curved surface of the entrance pupil is evident, more so than with the 200/2 if memory serves. The image is cropped as I'm not a big fan of cat's eye bokeh.

In terms of image sharpness etc. the 400/4.5 is amazingly good. Its bokeh performance varies depending on the actual scene and the way you approach it photographically. Most of the time, the background is a very pleasant blur.

No cliché, just a beautiful image contrasting sharp, fine details & bokeh that seem to have turned into amoebas Birna
I must look out for coruscating water myself ;)

No worries Birna, you're absolutely right - I just took it out of the bag and put the hood on after the photo. It is important to shield the front lens from direct sun and mechanical damage.

I always hesitate to share--my ex telling me a good camera would be wasted on me is seared into me--but I notice differently and remember more while hiking with a camera, and I enjoy trying. This small moment was with a NIKKOR Z 180-600mm:

Again, the endearing narrow-gauge railway 'Tertitten', here represented by  the century-old locomotive 'Höland'  (name is written with the German 'ö' instead of the Norwegian 'ø', as the machine is made in Germany).

Nikon Z5, Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75, IR-filter B+W 093. The Heligon softens quite noticeably when used for IR, but that effect simply adds to the charm of using (or rather, abusing) this vintage X-ray lens.
