After two-day consecutive tragic incidents in Japan, at least the dawn sky of the third day of 2024 was beautiful...

The updated forecast now warns of approaching low tempatures in the -25 to -30C range. Which is even for us bad news. I do my best to be prepared and hope my current bout of pneumonia has disappeared towards the Siberian encounter in a couple of days ahead. Sigh. Sunny Spain with Paco is a dream yet to come true.

Why not move to Spain? You are old enough to do silly things for your pleasure! You do not need to work anymore and the temperatures in Spain do comfort your health conditions

I don't need to relocate to Spain in order to do silly things, Frank :) Plus there are family matters to attend to as well.
However, later today I'm booking flight tickets to Cádiz so I can team up with my dear friend Paco again.

For those not familiar with Norwegian idiosyncrasies, the signs you now at this time of the years see everywhere with the text 'Rasfare' (literally, 'Danger of an avalanche') mean you should stay away from that area. Which nobody does. Thereby they are exposed to the real danger of being maimed by falling icicles, a fact of Nordic life seen every winter. However, the property owners and landlords can claim the general public has been warned :(

Once in a while we see some snow in the down town areas. Dumping snow into the harbour isn't permitted any more (pollution danger) thus there are temporary snow stacks here and there, waiting to be moved into the out-of-city snow depots. If we are to get a new snow-rich winter those depots can have snow depths > 100m, meaning they need many many months to thaw. Once in a while the snow isn't entirely gone by October/November when new snow arrives, thus the foundation for a new local 'glacier' is present. The scenery starkly reminds of the Planet Winter in Ursula LeGuin's famous novel 'The Left Hand Side of Darkness'.
Now, this pitiful small heap just reminds me the winter has arrived.

The whole "Central bus station" is in a very bad state. We as the governing coalition try to bring the administration to showing activity. Meanwhile, it's getting even colder around here. This night down to -31C, inland to -36C. Birna,
Agree with the ongoing eyesore of brutalist architecture. Here's the not-very-photogenic but daily view from my home. While Washington DC has a long list of brutalist-style buildings, this one has the informally claimed the title of ugliest of all. Hence the desire of many citizens to anticipate the first snowfall to add some charm to the urban scenery.

Total contrast John. Stablished and ethereal; nature and man-made; lineal and free-floating; dark and luminous...The limited palette giving some sense of unity. Then there is the asigned space in the composition to balance it out. Just lovely.

Snow is not an amorphous powder -- it has delicate structure and layering. It is also portrays the sequence of weather changes over time. Rather unexpectedly, IR photography can help illustrate these facts.

Very nice. The 40mm is a suitable companion to the Zf.

In a suddent twist of Nature. ambient temperatures shot up >20C in a few hours and snowfall threatens to come as rain instead. This has the dire consequence that all the snow on our porch would be wet *and heavy*, possibly weighings tonnes, so could damage the wooden structure due to the weight. Snow clearance was immediately required and Ruth bravely stepped forward. We managed to get her out the window, as the door was blocked by the snow pack, and she set to work immediately. A brave lady :)
IR with the Nikon Z5 and the Nikkor 40mm f/2 Z.

Interesting and houting result. Really pops the action and creates a whole ambiance
Thanks, Paco. It is quite a (dance) show when they pop out of the dark and rearrange themselves in the tree. There is plenty of space around but for reasons only known to egrets, they all want to be in this specific tree, bickering in silence for a few minutes till everyone agrees with an emerging arrangement.

Walking on an (almost) empty seafront, the weather being what it is these days, windy cold. Ambleteuse, Opal Coast, France.
It's a quick storytelling challenge I made for a Twitter photo community I follow: a story on a 3*3 BW square grid. All on iPhone and a free, but low-res, grid making app.
I liked the exercise.

Brussels, this evening. Under the railway viaduct, close to Brussel Zuid station. The street art was masked by the car which at first irritated me, but it being white facilitated this "ambiguous" shot.
Zf, 40/2 at f/4. Nice lens and terrific bargain, although the six times (ahem) more expensive Voigtländer 50/1.0 beats it in every respect (sharpness, contrast, LoCA...).

Hope the air is dry -- such cold air is unpleasant anyway, however. I would need a heat mask :(

Winter dawn. The full moon is up but scarcely visible in thelayers of pink-hued clouds. Strong winds the last days have cleared the trees of most snow, but make no mistake -- winter still reigns supreme.

Yes, quite dry when get to this time of the year, and the air cannot hold much humidity anyway at these temperatures as can be seen in the image. Air pollution can get pretty bad under this lid though.

During class.
A field trip with some students. Here, you can see them enjoying a guest class in Seville. I used the silent shutter. The light through the window is ok but I got heavy banding with the fluorescent lights. It took some time for me to realize and change to mechanical. That also brought up the question of what will happen in a situation like this with a electronic only shutter camera?

The lens was probably the Olympus OM 1.2/55mm or the 1.4/50mm of same make on the Z6 with Novoflex. I just found the picture yesterday. EXIF reads DateTime: 2021:06:04 09:29:51, ... If it was the Voigt it would read in the EXIF
