---Interestingly, the snowflakes on the far right and the far left looks sharper. I wonder if it is due to the field curvature.

The results between f/2 and f/1.2 of the Nikkor 55mm f/1.2 Ai on the 'Christmas lights'
Likely the residual aberrations of coma etc. act to give the blur circles a mere defined outline, thus making an illusion of increased "sharpness".
and, possibly, the effect of vignetting (similar to stopping down, however anisotropic) on the reduction of spherical aberration ?
