Post your "blog" contributions here No theme (other than what the passage of time creates), no contest implied, a maximum of one picture per day in the actual month and no more than 4 images per month for NG members, up to 31 for Supporters. You can distribute the contributions as once per week if you so prefer. Enjoy!
This is the final month of the year so let us make it special, perhaps in a better way than the year 2020 itself :)

The landscape in my neighbourhood is dotted with ancient artefacts dating back to the Iron Age or older. There are hundreds of burial mounds, some of them very prominent in the landscape if they have survived the razing vandalism done in the last century. Here is a nice example, around 1500 years old, situated smack in the middle of the school yard of the local primary school. The developers had planned for the mound to be razed -- of course -- but their designs were overthrown. Instead the new school got its name from the mound ('Haugtun' == ' [burial] mound in the [farm, school] yard') and the pupils might see something different and older than their IPads (perhaps).
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 S-Line Z lens on my PrimaLuce Z5, IR though the Hoya R720 filter. Undoubtedly this lens is an excellent performer also for IR, at least as far as sharpness is concerned.

The City Theatre is closed, the Christmas decoration is red, this year
Z6 55/1.2 Ai
I like the atmosphere.
Does the red color mean something?
Interestingly, the snowflakes on the far right and the far left looks sharper. I wonder if it is due to the field curvature.
-
Thanks Fons and Akira.
Red has no specific meaning, a romantic Christmas perhaps ;)
I guess the perceived sharpness can relate to the colour luminance which may be different at the edges of this fast lens.

Likely the residual aberrations of coma etc. act to give the blur circles a mere defined outline, thus making an illusion of increased "sharpness".

Thank you, John, for taking time to investigate and share the results. These would prove how the residual aberrations make the images characteristic and interesting.

and, possibly, the effect of vignetting (similar to stopping down, however anisotropic) on the reduction of spherical aberration ?

Wrap your books, and other paper related material in plastic and put them into the freezer.
These creatures hide behind paintings also!

They steal out in the dark and eat your paintings ....
-
Our local Southern California micro climate (≈3.5 km inland from the ocean) is too dry to support these primitive insects in most parts of the house, except in area of the bathroom. Since they don't carry disease and their population seems to remain small and stable, I don't worry about having to kill them, and consider them co-habitants. No evidence yet that they eat Epson inkjet prints!
-
The silverfish are very common in Australia and New Zealand and are a dammed nuisance - especially with respect to books and fabrics - as already noted below.

Yes.
I just followed the nomenclature on Roland's Website where the Serial-number 198831 is part of the Ai-s*. Of course, with no aperture connection, it is fully manual :)
On a complementary note: the image was taken from the car, so the front-screen is an extra kind of filter...

Interesting result. Does the increased spectral range also result into higher exposure values ? Is there any significant loss in sharpness when not filtering away the IR spectrum ?

Not really different exposure compared to visible alone. The actual lens (24/1.8Z) seems to be very well corrected for chromatic errors thus sharpness survives also into the IR range.

I have received today a few images of a rehearsal of Therese and myself in a duet by Ramón Oller. The photographer is Ferran Sanchez, now in Belgium. He is scanning the film and has been so kind as to share it with the company. Were taken November 8th 1999 witha Nikon F90x and a 35-70mm, at f4 and 1/50th. The film was Tmax 3200 developed D76 at 21º for 18 minutes -I´ve got this from the photographer- In the image, Therese and myself in a rehearsal space close to Sans train station, Barcelona.

Signs of life. Japanese persimmons are the brightest spot in the yard this time of year, still clinging to branches as the leaves have fallen. This year we had a large crop - they seem to happen in alternate years - too much for us to eat them all and pandemics make it harder to give them away. So this year I’m making vinegar. This is about 5l of persimmons mashed up and dosed with a bit of sake kasu- the lees of sake production. After a slow start it has begun a vigorous fermentation. I may draw off some of the liquid prior to the secondary fermentation which converts the alcohol to vinegar.

These days of late have been simply awful: dark, extremely mild nowhere near or below the freezing point one should expect at the season, wet, bleak, negligible snow, sky is livid (in the alternate meaning of 'livid' as we use in botany, ie. lead-coloured) and blankets everything in a gloomy mood. Depression runs rampant in the community. No wonder the photography is afflicted as well.
The Cosina-Voigtländer 25mm f/4 Skopar S (Nikon RF mount) is a little gem and is perfectly and unobtrusively seated onto my PrimaLuce Z5. This scene on the parking lot when I went shopping today is typical for the current circumstances; all the wetness and gloom one might *not* wish for, all cars are grey or electric or both, and people are all masked-up. Yours truly included, which makes a hassle for shooting by the way.

Santa fallen from the sky
Df, 28mm f/1.4E
Santa Claus is not a Dutch tradition its foreign, we have sinterklaas, although christianized, has pagan roots and is about 3 wks earlier in the month. Also the character is quite different, for you astrologers sinterklaas is within the archer, santa falls at wintersolstice and so is waterhorse or goat. (sagittarius vs capricorn)!

Sometimes, the graininess induced by high ISO (and inclement weather) is not that bad. In fact, for IR rendered as black-and-white, it can add to the overall image impact.
Taken with the AFS 24mm f/1.4 Nikkor and the B+w 093 IR filter on the PrimaLuce Z5, this scene reminds *me* eerily of the ancient psychothriller film "Pond of the Dead" which to my generation of Norwegians at least is very familiar. Fog hung almost to the ground and everything everywhere was dripping wet.
I would set the range of ISO for which noise is very acceptable to 100-1600, with possible excursions to 3200 ISO or even higher. Thus a camera not as ISO-compliant as the Z6/Z6.2, but more than sufficiently capable for most requirements.
Among Norwegian nature photographers, the ever-present occurrence of power lines along any inland water body is an insider joke. You can probably see the presence here is as expected, too. One tends not to see this issue during the actual shoot, but surely expects to see the "law" in action later on during image processing.
-
Nice one. Your IR shots combine high sharpness in the focus area with that "glowy / fuzzy" look that was the trademark of IR in film times - not enough glow to pass for film IR, but the atmosphere gets nearer.
You should encourage software editors to create a poser-line-removal plugin, I guess. These are easily detected.
-
Yes, we photographers are sure to detect those power lines -- however, later.
As the foreground structure is obviously man-made, I saw no reason to clone out those cables. In fact, they should always be visible if they exist within the frame just to remind us that "unspoilt" or "untouched" Nature is rare as hen's teeth. Even in my country only 11% of the area can be (dubiously) classified as "pristine" and that is a technical definition based upon the distance to the nearest road. Power lines don't count ....

A few days ago passed away one of my most beloved ilustrators: Richard Corben. He gave me many hours of pleasure through his worlds and adventures, many memorable characters and a way of seeing action, sinuous and sensual lines, composition and an intense and bold use of color. Here is a little tribute.
Rest in peace and thank you!

John, how is the manual focusing of the 85mm 1.4D on the Z6? The 80-200 2.8D is pretty hard for me.
Not easy. It's doable like any other fast lens with the focus zoom in action, but it doesn't operate very quickly. A pity actually. My AF-S 80-200 works very fast on the Z6, can imagine that the D version also is hard working.

Can you at least perform publicly ? here, the few professional musicians and actors I know are unnerved by the continuing impossibility to get on stage even at 1/4 capacity, while for some "reason" priests can still invite worshippers to mass (and, since churches have mostly become oversized, the capacity reduction is not even reducing attendance).

Yes. The live houses and concert halls offer live performances at 1/2 of their capacities or with the enough amount of social distances. Temples and shrines advise the public to visit there for the beginning of the year as sporadically as possible.

Ordered (on a whim, admittedly) months ago, the 11mm f/4.5 Laowa FF II C-Dreamer in native Z-mount arrived today. As it was raining outside and the lens has an impressive 126(!) degrees view, the first test shots were conducted indoors.
I used the Laowa on my PrimaLuce Z5 and it turned out quite nice results. In fact, better than anticipated as least as central image sharpness is concerned. Apparently the optical design is sophisticated enough to avoid most of the nasty chromatic aberrations so often found with wide-angle lenses. There is vignetting wide open, as expected, and peripheral sharpness does decline substantially. However, with judicious use such shortcomings might not be too significant. On the positive merit side, the lens is very small, almost too tiny to be handled by large hands. Erik my Danish friend would be in troubles ... The field curvature is surprisingly low and geometric distortion (at distance) is negligible as well. Occasionally, "moustache" distortion is visible. For close-ups, to a near limit at 19cm, barrel distortion creeps in however.
Used for "selfie"-style shots, the Laowa renders a "lobster claw" view as one's hands become excessively large due to the huge angle of view and the rectilinear projection. So, unless you are into test shooting, don't do like what I did for the shot below :) Slow shutter speed at 1/5 sec and no focusing provided just bearable (sic) image definition...
(colours are of course way off, as the PrimaLuce Z5 is full-spectrum and I used no corrective filtration. However, my hair and dress colours came out with acceptable likeness).

As the Laowa certainly delivered better than I had expected, after all the lens is not *that* expensive, I might write up a review of it. My main reason for getting it, apart from weighting what use such extreme wide-angle lenses might provide for my IR camera, was the curiosity of the optical products Chinese makers now bring to the market. I already have the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra-Macro and the 100mm f/2.8 2X macro lens. In particular the former has seen very extensive use in my aquatic macrophyte study the last years. The Laowa lenses so far seem to be very good value, very well built, and have adequate to excellent handling of colour issues. Unfortunately they come without a CPU chip and thus the EXIF data is incomplete. I do have managed to get a CPU in the 25/2.8 ultra-Macro and if the Covid situation improves, in the future will ask Erik in Copenhagen to help me adapt the 100/2.8 for CPU as well. The 11mm in Z mount would require an entirely different CPU design, and I'm not willing to invest resources into getting a new solution for the Z mounts.

The rather tiny, yet ultra-wide 11mm f/4.5 Laowa (in native Z-mount!) is a pleasant surprise. Despite its enormous 126 degr. angle of view, it delivers crisp and clear images with almost no detectable colour fringing, and a flat field as well -- amazing. OK, there is severe light fall-off to the periphery when you shoot it wide open, which at f/4.5 lens "speed" happens a lot in winter in my part of the world. Focusing this tiny lens is challenging as well. As it is so sharp, one has to do precise focusing and cannot rely on zone focusing for optimal results.
Towards the near limit of 19cm, the lens shade and photographer's shade tend to interfere, so getting shadow-free results is not always easy. Here is a snapshot from my regular hang-out, where I'm enjoying excellent cappucino (and waffles) while reading the news paper.

No bearing (sic) to the 360-1200 lens serviced by Richard -- I think I have had my 360-1200 sample for at least 12 years by now :)
The 360-1200 is not a commonly seen lens, however. The early K/AI version totalled below 100 units, and the AIS following them perhaps a little more. So we're talking about a population of 250 or less.

The new "Greener Future" is upon us already. No snow in sight anywhere in my neighbourhood. At this time of the year one would expect almost 1m of that cold, fluffy white stuff blanketing the landscape :( instead this month apparently is set to be the hottest on record ever. Sigh. Climate changes are upon us.
The sordid view from Ruth's apartment indicates the grim reality facing us now. Taken with the 11mm f/4.5 LAOWA ultra-wide lens on the Z50. A nice combination, by the way. Everything post done on Linux, which is another step forward.
-
What's your Linux PP software, by the way ?
-
Photo Ninja & Irfanview, in this case. Both install and run flawlessly under Linux Mint 19.3, using the Windows setup file(s). Darktable or RawTherapee might be alternatives and the laptop carries both as native Linux programs. Then there is the "GIMP" if one can stomach it.
The nice aspect about photo Ninja is that it can deal with RAW files from cameras unknown to it; there is no colour accuracy, but making a profile for the given camera can put things straight. Or at least, make acceptable results.
The LAOWA lens here is at the near limit, 19cm, and even at f/11 there is insufficient depth of field to create an illusion of sharpness in the background. One has to be critically precise with the placement of focus since the lens in itself is very sharp. A bit like the 24/2 Nikkor in fact, which also "suffers"from the same problem.

Pork belly (Norwegian: svineribbe, ribbe) is the most common traditional cuisine for Christmas here in my country. It is enjoyed by at least 60% of the population. Such popularity leads to numerous articles and manuals on 'how-to' do it correctly, of course. In later years, a 'ribbe'-dedicated slow-TV channel is devoted to the process. In real time whilst carols are played (via an old-fashioned record player) and there is an endless spate of 'ribbe'-dedicated insights and tid-bits for the enthusiast. For example, what happens to the proteins of the fleshy parts at various temperatures. There is real time update on temperatures and a graphic presentation of the temperature-time curve. And there is a camera inside the oven to provide the viewers with the current appearance of the dish.
How Norwegian. Merry Christmas to everyone out there, whether or not you enjoy this peculiar dish :)
I did a snapshot of the TV screen with my newly acquired Df (#2) and the Voigtländer 58mm f/1.4 lens.

Last sun set seen in a long while. Daytime in my neck of the woods is getting extremely short now and we can only hope for brighter days and a better future ahead.
Df, CV 40mm f/2 SL.2.
(my "spare" extra Nikon Df has been shuttling to and fro Norway-Japan for a month or so. Norwegian Customs tossed it out immediately, after 1 hr (!), apparently for no reason, so the camera was sent back to Japan, where it did the rounds, then shipped anew to me. After a month, I finally got a super-clean sample of a black Df to join the others. Norwegian Customs this time forgot all about import duty and VAT. Good on me).

This is Hellios 44-2 on D750 in the same mood as previous nice contributions!

I don’t usually photoshop huge red bows onto my photos, but when I do, it is usually Christmas.

We had another snowy dusting - only temporarily it seems. Nothing apparently lasts this winter :(

It snowed a lot then rained a lot then got warm then froze. Nothing much lasting around here.

Some street art, for a change, not evoking winter or bad weather - today was stormy, by the way. Found on an outdoors electric cabinet. Df, Helios 44 @f/4.5.

Close to the beach. Very sunny Spain, even in the winter days.

The Fuji S5 Pro is still a very fine camera, and works with all the Nikon glass. Here with the AF-S 50/1.4 Love that rendering ;) ISO 320 f/1.4 1/30s
I found a near mint Fuji FinePix S2 Pro, looking forward to those results...

Winter is playing some kind of hide-and-seek, or a teasing game. Now you see it, now you don't.

did it happen in your neigbourhoud? First I thougth it is one of your genious IR colour pictures, but then I saw the carbonized timber...

A dwelling in my neighbourhood, yes. Every house here is made of wood :(
The fire started at Christmas Eve. This is the less impacted rear side of the building, the front with the roof burnt and caved in was inaccessible at present.

I hope no people hurt these days ---
Use of candlesticks may have caused the blaze. Four people rescued by the firefighters, one sent to hospital, all survived. They were immigrants and had no house insurance, so lost everything. Bad Christmas.

Bubbled house
Two days ago, a fierce storm hit my town.
Window panes were covered with water drops; each drop was acting as a sort of fisheye on the house facing my own house.
