With 8.5cm (85mm) and 13.5cm (135mm) lenses already in their rangefinder lineup, The Nikkor-P 10.5cm (105mm) was a natural fit between the two, 100mm would have been a bit close to 85mm. The same focal lengths then translated to the F mount and have continued ever since...

The f1.8 version of the 105mm never caught on like the f/2.5 models. Bigger and heavier than its less wide-eyed sibling, but still an excellent performer.

Df, 105/1.8, just after sunset. "Blue is the warmest colour"

One needs as many 105mm lenses as necessary :D

For me, that is a pretty substantial number :D

Most of them are 105/2.5 versions (S- and F-mount), plus various f/2.8 and f/4 Micro-Nikkors, Bellows-Nikkors, the tiny 10.5cm f/4 T, the mighty 105/1.4 AFS, and of course the 105/4.5 UV-Nikkors.

The Df is synergetic with the 105/2.5 (AI). My girl friend Ruth in her kitchen, very low light level in winter.

It's a great focal lenght and serves more purposes.   I use now the Nikkors 1.8 Ai-S,  2.0 DC, 2.5  Sonnar and Gauss versions,  Micro 2.8 Ai-S  and AF-D  and 4.0 Ai-S   (and the 100mm Rodenstock Heligon f/1.6  and Carl Zeiss Visionar f/1.6  come close)

This is with the Sonnar version (from 1969)
