Interesting. I can imagine originally the supporting arch was built from wood and in later times replaced with concrete?
The Romans used concrete - in fact the mixture they used is stronger than modern concrete and strengthens over time due to chemical reactions - so that may be original rather than a later addition - the walls don't look deep enough to stand even with a wooden support.
