i like these period haulbridges, they are disappearing from our landscapes.
Before you saw them a lot and not only for light traffic, also known are double bridges of this type.

Fons, sad to know these bridges are disappearing.  They always reminds me of the drawings of Van Gogh.

The large ones have hauls on either side of the crossing, classic example is the famous "de Magere brug" across the Amstel in Amsterdam, must have a picture somewhere.

Thanks for the clarification, Fons.

In an area with little water, the few bridges have more impact.  However, travelling to Holland, the north-west part of the Netherlands, loads of water can be found. And very long bridges.  Like the Moerdijkbrug with a length of 1.040 meters. It connects the Province Brabant and Belgium with Rotterdam and the rest of Holland. In the background the chemical industry of Shell is visible.

The old churchyard at Risør, Norway has been "enhanced" by a concrete roadbridge at its entrance. The victims of the 1807 sea battles between Dano-Norwegian and British Navies are buried here. The historical memorial has been paid full respect by road authorities, it seems (?).

Yes, from the Sjælland side. There is a lay-by before the bridge that allows unrestricted view of the strait and the bridge. Vantage point is very low, though.

Yes, from the Sjælland side. There is a lay-by before the bridge that allows unrestricted view of the strait and the bridge. Vantage point is very low, though.

If you walk under the bridge and approx 250 meters longer north you can get a bit higher on a moraine hill but from that vantage point the bridge will be backlight unless you are there in the evening.

#1 Moraine hill seen from under the bridge.

#2 Just to give an impression of the distance and vantage point - shot from the hill - APS-C / 35mm (approx)

Thank you and Thomas, it's one of two similar massive structures on Ranoch Moor, exposed to the harshest weather Scotland can muster.  I have driven over them many times over the years on my visits to the Highlands and on the way to the Isles of Mull and Skye, a magical place Ranoch Moor.

None of the good or big ones.  I recommend Point Blank(d. Boorman, 1967) for its one sequence that beautifully uses the Los Angeles River and the area under the bridge.

Yes, it was an accident waiting to happen. OTOH, they could have replaced it with better built look-alike. I know, wishful thinking..........

Thank's for the additional info, Seapy. Scotland is on my travel list and this is another brick in the wall. I probably should move it up on the priority list.

The Devil's Bridge, island of Torcello, Venetian Lagoon.

There are various unpleasant stories as to how the bridge got its name. I suspect it was just down to the lack of guard rails.

Yes, impressive. I put one more picture to give a scale: On the lower arches you can see peoples. The purpose of this aqueduct was to supply water to the near town. On top of the bridge there is a canal covert with huge slabs, which are the top.

Built from year 2001 to 2004.

Interesting. I can imagine originally the supporting arch was built from wood and in later times replaced with concrete?

Interesting. I have known this bridge from childhood and haven't noticed the (very ugly) concrete addition. It used to be just the stones as far as I know

That bridge in Marseille looks impressive, slender.

The Romans used concrete - in fact the mixture they used is stronger than modern concrete and strengthens over time due to chemical reactions - so that may be original rather than a later addition - the walls don't look deep enough to stand even with a wooden support.
