In a few years we'll only have Apple MacOS and Lenovo Windows laptops.

And neither will be cheaper on Black Friday

Intending to visit the Birmingham Apple Store Saturday to have a look at the new MBP,( not the sole reason for the trip I am on bag carrying duties following my wife around with a bored look on my face 😎 ) initial enquiries made by phone but they were not sure when they would be on display or available to purchase. My present machine is a mid 2012 version so for the money I hope there is a significant speed benefit, I have to factor in a Thunderbolt and USB adaptor to be able to use my hard drives and card reader, is there anything else I need to give thought too ?

Jacques, go see it.
I have a difficulty in purchasing the $3.000 15" model without even seeing it. I have only seen the 13" without the touch-bar. It's amazingly small, they deliberately placed it next to the MacBook Air and you can easily see that it's smaller.

I only saw the 13" Touchbar at the Apple Store. I finally ordered the 15", Intel I7 2.7 GHz, 16GB, 1TB SSD, and the Radeon 460 4GB graphic processor. Somewhat oversized, but as everything is soldered inside, I have to foresee my future needs. The Touchbar is fun; maybe some applications can take benefit of it.

And I got a discount of about 8%.

Now I have to chase for USB-C hubs & connections.....

Yeah, sorry about the confusion @ Time Machine. It's the hardware they are discontinuing. The reason it worries me is that they are abandoning several things: Displays, routers, Time Capsule and what about the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro? They make this wonderful professional workstation and then never updates it? They are still showing how fast it is running Aperture on their site...

In other news, here's an article about why USB Type-C is cool:

USB-C will be a bit a pain in the neck in the beginning, but an excellent solution, further down the road.  Two years ago, I was envisaging a Mac Pro (the "dustbin"); in the meantime it became very silent around this machine; I also learnt about the relative poor cost/performance; so I decided to go for another MBP.

Has anybody some experience with the MacPro ?

They will abandon things which are not profitable, and stick with things which are profitable.  It is the purchaser who will decide which is which.

I went, I saw and because they actually had stock i purchased one :-) All seems to be working as expected, I moved all my image files from my old machine to my raid backup drives and then used the migration assistant feature to transfer all my programs and settings to the new machine, I was pleasantly surprised that everything worked perfectly taking approx 45 minutes, I had to sign out of Photoshop on the old machine and re sign in on the new machine, this was an area I had a small problem 4 years ago on my previous machine upgrade. Initial impression. performance seems to be as i expected, the machine is slightly smaller with narrower bezels around the screen, slightly lighter in weight, the larger trackpad is taking a bit of time to get used too as i am making unintentional commands due to not keeping my fingers clear. Two ' dongles '  were purchased to allow connection to my original version Thunderbolt external hard drives and my USB3 card reader, The keyboard is a bit firm with muted sound when typing, a bit like gently tapping on a cardboard box !

The Apple stand alone routers (Airport Extreme) were really good.  Very quick to set up and relatively trouble free compared to the earlier Belkin units I had.

I bought the 2.7 version, the top model I think 2.9 would have entailed waiting until the new year for delivery, as far as I could work out most of the extra cost between the 2.7 and 2.9 is caused but the larger SSD drive fitted to the 2.9 version. I very rarely have to wait for the computer, it is normally waiting for me to make my next decision 😎. The touch bar I think will be useful after getting familiar with its functions, I just need to remember to look down and see what options are available.

A recent brief article that offers an explanation of why Apple does some of the things it does:

Some people will regret the MagSafe connector on the new MBP. Snapnator www.snapnator.com a startup comes up with a handsome little magnetic connector.  Available upcoming January:
