On Christmas day, I saw a Green Frog swimming in this pond. Then we had a cold snap and it was transformed. The melting and thawing caused by the temperature hovering around the freezing point seems to produce this pattern. Looks like an icy onion to me.

This is an awesome find!  To me, it looks like a surprised eyeball!

Akira, I love your take on it. Maybe someone with a hangover on New Year's morning?  :P

Tom, I was not aware of Mordor, but that makes sense, too, aside from the possible difference of the temperture.  :D

Tom, the icy onion looks scary.

Jakov, The more I think about what you and Akira have said, the more hesitant I become to go out our back door. This thing expanding out of the frozen ground is just off our back porch lurking there, growing as it lurks. Soon it might spring from the earth, a chthonic one-eyed creature ready to pounce. I'm going to have to walk our dog in the front yard. I would hate to have Reggie eaten by an onion!

We had snow in the morning today (18th).  The snow had changed to rain, and the snow has inevitably started to melt, leaving some patterns here and there...

Barnacles at low tide.

Might fit here or in the Minimalism thread.

Bjørn, what are these blue substance seen among the barnacles (suppose this is a VIS image)?

No idea. That's how the image came out in the end. I might blame the camera perhaps.

Thanks for the (mysterious) info.  Hmm...it doesn't look like natural color.  Strange, but interesting.

A side comment: why should photography deal exclusively with "natural" colours? and don't even start defining what those might be :D
