While the Norwegian name Svartisen correctly translates as "The Black Glacier", the meaning is not the ice itself is black, just that the old ice is darker than the newly formed parts of the glacier. Svartisen extends almost to sea level and is thus quite accessible.

Thanks Bjørn. 'have been there, but thought the name was derived from the sediment in the ice. Thanks for clarification.
Great place, it is. We hiked the whole trail as it was post season. Not posted much yet, but this one.
Interesting how far the glacier moved back,- our guide book was wrong by about 1.5 kilometeres.
