On 30th March of last year I posted the this image as reply #689 (page 46) on this thread. Given that this was the first "technical" image of the moon I had made I wasn't displeased, but the more I thought about my setup, the quality of the lens used, and the rather favorable "seeing" conditions the more I came to think that I had really made a mess in post processing.

The data in the image was in fact OK, I simply had not stopped to consider that the difference in the physical behavior of light when making an image of a bird at say 20 meters and making an image of the moon through the atmosphere at about 384.400 kilometers must be considered in post.

OK, this is pushing the limits of the scope of this thread.....
....but I was fascinated by a couple of online articles.

Here's a starter:
"The journeys home from the Moon made very special demands on what could return regarding weight; from Apollo 11 to the final Apollo 17 mission, a total of twelve [Hasselblad] camera bodies were left behind on the lunar surface. Only the film magazines containing the momentous images were brought back."

The book by Britain's Andy Saunders concerning the remastering of the space and moon landing images taken on the special NASA Hasselblad cameras looks as if it may be very well worthwhile.

I like the colours in this image - the blues and creamy colours work well for me.  Apparently the dark side of the moon is even more battered than what we see from the earth side view.

Thx  . I encounter always the same difficulty to « give » the moon the « right » color. With regard to the « battered » sight, I will check if this is not the result of an artefact induced by the use of Topaz Sharpen AI in the post-processing.

There's a real sense of 3 dimensionality to these. Tangible depth to the craters.

Can some of you more knowledgeable people out there help me with a daft question?
I'm guessing Bob took his from the USA and MFloyd from Switzerland, both in the Northern hemisphere.
Does this account for the rotation of the moon's position between the two shots?

I'd naively assumed we always saw the same face of the moon, wherever we were on the Earth. I know the orientation of the constellations rotate over a few hours....

Our view of the moon will vary depending on where we are situated on the earth's surface and where the moon is in relation to our viewing position.

For example it is is 1:53 pm Sunday, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) here in Melbourne (12:53AM Monday, local time).  The lit up portion of the moon that is visible to me here in the southern hemisphere at this time,and if viewed in a camera viewfinder,  it would be located in the bottom left hand corner of a camera held level to the earths surface.  So latitude has a definite influence on what we see from earth - an extreme example here to make the point.  My coordinates here are approximately -37.9299 Deg South and 145.17339 East of Greenwich.  Also a slight change as the earth rotates over the course of an evening and from evening to evening.
