I have two from last night.
First with the Z6, second with the D500. Both with 500PF = 1.4x TCIII
The Z6 image is cropped a little more.

I took them at about 21:30, didn't want to sacrificing my night's sleep.

First attempt with the V1 clinging on to the 200-500. Room for improvement in my technique...will have to practice more.

It's kinda funny to see Tycho crater in the upper R quarter of the Moon, but then it's normal since you're in the S hemisphere...

Given the same lens (300 f4), which would be a better body to shoot the moon, a Z6 (new, full frame) vs. D5500 (circa 2015, DX).

I am leaning towards Z6 with greater crop in post.

The Z6 has in-camera DX crop, but then you only have 12Mpixels in DX format.
A 300 mm lens at ∞ will project an image on the sensor (any sensor, cropped or not) less than 3 mm in diameter, so you need all the resolution you can get.
Resolution-wise, the D5500 would be the better option.

On the focussing side, it's much easier to focus with the Z6 and its EVF zooming at the press of a button.
Since I assume you have both cameras, you can easily try both to see what best suits you.

The 300mm is a bit short, especially on a FF body,  would do fine on a CX size sensor (8.8x13 mm), you probably need to add a teleconverter.

Thanks, this is helpful. When you said D5500 is better option for resolution, is that b/c it has higher pixel density?

I don't have a teleconverter, sounds like it would be a good addition!

Both are 24 MP cameras, the same quantity (24 MP) are squeezed on the smaller DX sensor of the D5500. Still, the Z6 has superior focussing capabilities, so you better test both to see which gives the best results.

In this respect the 1V1-1V3 series being mirrorless and having a small size sensor (13.2x8.8 mm) is even better!

With the 200-500mm @500mm and 1.4x teleconverter, the projected image on the sensor is 6.6mm (75% of the frame height), and you can see the image in the EVF very well even without magnification.

This is yesterday's moon with a 1V1 + FT1 + 200-500mm + TC14eII, sky was partially hazy, cropped only the sides to have a square frame and resized @1200x1200 px (original was 2400x2400px):

BTW, I have taken about 100 photos with the prospect of stacking them, this one is from the sequence, no stacking.

My input from my new Z50 camera
The first one is with Tamron 150-600 on 600 mm manually focused with no VC (unfortunately no compatibility only G2 model is compatible)
The second is 300/4 AF-S with kenko 1.4 converter fully compatible in AF (the lens has no VR)
