Still suffering from Covid-induced "brain fog" andf lack of energy. In order to combat the collateral side effects of the virus, I'm fixing up gear combinations for the upcoming season.

The old non-retrofocus Fisheye-Nikkors always were troublesome on the DSLRs due to the general issue of mounting them with the mirror raised and focusing was wellnigh impossible. With the Z system there are no such issues and adapting these lenses is very simple and straight-forward.

The setup comprises a K3 ring (female bayonet, in front), a 52-42mm step ring, a short (17-31mm type) focusing helicoid, and a flat M42-z adapter at the rear. Takes a minute to join the pieces together and then just mount your ancient and venerable Fisheye and go fishing!!!

Depicted below are the 10mm f/5.6 OP-Fisheye-Nikkor and the 7.5mm f/5.6 Fisheye-Nikkor on my Z9. I shot the motif with the Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 on the Zfc and noticed in passing that the Viltrox doesn't like close-focusing as this increases the normally very low level of chromatic errors to a significant and visible amount (most of which removed here of course). Thus, next time I grab another lens for such documentation.

Depicted below are the 10mm f/5.6 OP-Fisheye-Nikkor and the 7.5mm f/5.6 Fisheye-Nikkor on my Z9.

Have been thinking of getting a wider fisheye than my 16mm. How would you recommend these two - and also the 8mm f/2.8?

Birna, I wonder why you just don't use an FTZ adapter to use the F-mount fisheyes on the Z body?  Am I missing something?

These fisheyes were designed as fix-focus. Now I can focus to infinity or as close as the front element.

Jack, the 8/2.8 being a retrofocus design is much bigger and heavier. In terms of sharpness, the f/2.8 is probably somewhat better, but the smaller lenses are much more versatile due to their less impressive size.

A male American Goldfinch. The patches of yellow are the beginning of a completely yellow body and head save for a black cap. For now, he looks a little scruffy. In a month, this bird will shine with a sulfurous hue.

Z9, 500 PF plus 1.4 teleconverter (III). f/8, 640 iso, 1/200, handheld, uncropped, AF-C single point, shot from my upstairs window from about 12–15 feet away.

This hardware combination is stellar. I can't wait for the migration season to get into full swing late this month. Hopefully some exotics will pass through my yard so I can capture them!
