Went out just before sunset and tried to get some interesting pictures from a place nearby. It's difficult to get inspired by places you know well, at least that's what i think.
Location: 51.338439, 5.270225
First two images have been shot from nearly the same spot, just turned around for different images. The small pond/brook is actually used by some cows ("wild" cows) for drinking. The last one effectively looking back at the first spot (you can't see it, it's behind the distant tree line).
Let me know whether you like the images or what you think could be improved. Thanks
-
Reviving this thread, even though it never got traction. I intend to keep this updated once in a while, like the very nice thread by John Geerts about the Regteheide (which is a different place than this one, link: https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=806.msg6819#msg6819 (https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=806.msg6819#msg6819)).
There were some wild fires lately and some of the area got burnt. Fortunately not (by a long mile) as severe as some other wild fires around the world, yet quite some damage to this little nature park. Some images to show the scorched earth and the vigilance of nature coming back up again. These were shot around the same area as the first 2 pictures that started this topic.
-
Hans, thanks for the bump to your 2017 postings. I am enjoying these images.

+1
I like especially the 3rd one with the white grass
-
Thank you Hugh and Thomas. I'm glad you like them.
Once in a while, my wife let's me out and then i go to this area :D
I visit it quite often, but usually without camera. I'll keep this thread alive, but postings may be infrequent.
-
Hans: lovely scene and light and pictures. Well worth a visit that place
-
Thanks Frank.
It's true that it is worth visiting and i do. I find it very hard, however, to "create" compelling photos here, as the environment is quite cluttered (forest area) or empty (heather area).
-
Really great series - one more thanks for the bump!
Like you I also enjoy John Geerts' series about Regteheide.

Thank you Lars, much appreciated.
And yes, i do appreciate John's series about Regteheide, perhaps because much of it looks like much of the Cartierheide ;)
-
Very nice series Hans. It's always difficult to show a nature area when the earth is flat ;)

Indeed very nice +1
-
I really like this series ! :D
3 years old thread which I never saw. Good idea to post it again and completing with new shots.
I think the fires might be just maintenance in order to limit Gorce invasion and so get more grass for cattle.
This is an annual practice here in the New Forest (South England) where horses, donkeys, cow are free.
I agree with John and Fons about getting nice images on a flat landscape.
Cheers, Francis.
-
Thanks John, Fons and Francis! I really appreciate you gentlemen stopping by and commenting.
@John: indeed, the absence of pittoreske buildings, or grand vistas sometimes makes things more challenging.
@Francis: these were actual wild fires, not controlled ones to invoke nature renewal, even though nature doesn't care about that and rejuvinates regardless.
Thanks again!
-
I am glad you revived the series, Hans. It must be a wonderful place to walk around without people.
My favourites are the last one in the first series and the second one in your second series. That second one is almost Vermeer-like with the clouds and the sun on the tree. The branches in the foreground are nice leading lines to the tree too. Great catch!

Thanks Peter, i really appreciate that.
It indeed is really nice without (or at least much less) people out. The place is quite small and can feel crowded really quickly. Usually, i'd like to go there for sunrise. Also way less people ;D
-
Hans, thank you for the bump! I envy you for having such a pleasant place nearby.
I like the first one from 2017 and the very last one with the white birch I assume.
To my eyes, the images look a bit over-sharpened. The images finely detailed from corner to corner are great, but I feel that the over-sharpened images may lack the sense of pleasant atmosphere which the place should offer.
-
I've been enjoying this series. One has to periodically get away from human-created shapes and forms. I like the processing choices on the recent ones best.
-
Thank you very much, Akira and Keith. Glad you like them.

Thank you Akira for the feedback on this. Do you feel that for all images? Or just one? Which parts give the feeling of oversharpening? I am (try to be) very careful with sharpening and only apply a very moderate amount at output (i use capture one and there is also some input sharpening). I'm really interested, because i'd like to avoid that over-sharpened look.
Thank you!

At least to my eyes, the fine details of the grasses and twigs look in general a bit too sharp. But that might be because the high-res image files from D810 is dramatically resized in order to post here.

Thank you for that feedback, Akira. I appreciate that. I'll be extra careful and check those fine details from now on.

Well, with some recent feedback in mind, i went back some time ago for a sunset. Shot some single shot images and some single and multi-row panos.
1. Cow highway, path regularly taken by the herd of cow roaming here. This should actually be under water (not deep, but anyway).
2. Ah, there they are, but now on the other side of the water. They were very apprehensive of me, as i had left the foot path.
3. Sun almost set.
4. Big vista with wispy cloud, gives quite a good view of how much larger the little lake should have been. Everything should be under water, as would i. 17 image pano.
5. Same wispy cloud, some moments later, from slightly different vantage point. 3 image, bracketed pano (9 images total).
I hope you like these.
-
More good stuff, Hans.
-
Hans, well worth the trip. Thanks.
-
Were these made in South Africa?
You don't need to travel!
Hans, Hans, Hans!
-
Yes, beauties, Hans!
-
Thanks ever so much, Keith, Hugh, Jakov and John. I much appreciate you guys stopping by and leaving a comment. Such positive comments at that. I'm blushing.

Hans, Hans, Hans!
Africa because of the dangerous "wild" cow, Jakov? ;D ;D
It was sort of "dangerous", since i was only wearing hiking shoes and i was precariously standing on a grass pol to not sink in the wet bottom beyond my ankles :D
-
Well ... went back to my beloved Cartierheide. Much because i saw John Geerts post some lovely heather shots from Regteheide. I wanted to see whether the heather was blooming here as well. Even though the name heide suggests there is lots of heather (because it means heather), not so much to be found. Probably the dry times last year didn't help that.
Anyway, managed to find some 'new' shots. Also the sunset was kinda nice.
-

Ditto!!

Nice set!

Another enjoyable set Hans.
-
Thank you very much for stopping by and leaving a comment, Erik, Nasos, Hugh and Akira. I greatly appreciate that and that some of my images are to your liking.
-
Hans, your recent sets are wonderful. Great atmosphere.
Will you go back soon? The “heide” seems to blossom abundantly. But many spectators are expected this weekend,
-
Thank you Peter.
I might go back, but don't know yet. I try to avoid crowds. This little nature park is not so big and gets crowded easily.
Glad that you like the images.
-
Beautiful Hans. Great when the Heath is in blossom
-

Thanks John. Likewise on your heather shots of Regteheide!
-
Another installment, went mushroom hunting this time. Saw some nice ones when out walking with the family, so went back with the camera.
Interested in your comments.
-
'shroooooms ;D
Hans, Hans, Hans!
-
Thanks Jakov.
I now realize you may have thought of some other type of 'shrooms, right. Sorry i couldn't do that for you ;D
-
Very nice autumn images ;)
-
HCS:
Really enjoyed your mushroom collection. I find fungi a very fun fall subject, gets me walking around the woods even more than usual. In Michigan we are blessed with countless woodland trails, esp. in the north, so lots of opportunities . I like them all, but the second one made me smile, reminds me of a large clam.
Look forward to more.
Randy
-
Those mushrooms are great, Hans!
-
Hans, I am mushrooms lover.
Although yours are not edible, I like them, mostly the second one. Amazing shape !
Francis.
-
Thanks all!
They give me an autumnal feeling as well.
Randy, Francis, thanks, the shape is exactly what drew me to this one. It was hidden from the path, when i moved into the shrub to photograph the fallen ones (1st one) i saw this particular one. Got some strange looks from passers by ;D
Much appreciated!
-
These are very detailed images, Hans. I can smell them. :)
-
Agreed with all the above. I like your choice of vantage point to make them look larger than life and, specially, to make me feel like a small entity wandering through a magic giant mushroom world.
Thanks for the trip :)
-
Thank you very much Akira and Paco, i much appreciate you stopping by and commenting.
Akira, all of these are focus stacks. rather deep stacks i might add. Ranging between 30 and 75 image deep.
Paco, i had my camera upside down hanging from the tripod (reversed centre column), especially for the 3rd i had the top of the camera buried in the dirt (remember it was upside down). It was exactly my idea to give the gnome in the woods feeling with these.
Thanks!
-
Been out again to my favourite area nearby. Dreary weather, but alas, had to shoot something as i haven't been out for a while. I did get a little bit of a sunset at the closing moments :D
Hope you like these ones!
-
I really like them Hans - the weather suits the scenery well imo. Please go out there again soon and bring home some more.. :-)
-

Thanks Lars, much appreciated!
I'll go there once in a while, it's really close ... as in ... just outside the town i live in ;D. Still difficult to find interesting things to shoot when going there.
-
Nice series, Hans. Like especially that sun setting sky. (Or is it Sunrise?)

Thanks John, indeed it is setting sun.

Hans, that you love this area very much shows in your images. Another enjoyable series.

Thanks a lot Hugh, much appreciated!
-
Tried to shoot a pano during the same outing as the last images above, but i messed up :-[. Decided to make a triptych out of it.
-
Hans, this triptych looks great - maybe better IMHO than had it been a pano.
-
Many fine shots Hans i esp like the sunset one of the december 31st series.
-
Thanks Hugh and Fons!

Thanks Hugh, lucky accident :D. I liked it so much myself that i'm having this printed.
-
Ok, so we had some snow in the NL. I went on the morning after the snowfall and almost missed the snow. There was still some around, but by the afternoon every bit of snow had melted away.
Went to the other side of this area than i usually enter for a (minute) change of scenery.
These are not portfolio images nor wall hangers, but i like the second one myself. Interested to hear your thoughts.
-
All are fine compositions, Hans. It would be hard for me to choose a favorite.
-

Yes - I have the same difficulty.
Nice to see the area in its winter state.

-
Yes - I have the same difficulty.
Thanks Hugh, that's a compliment to me :)
Nice to see the area in its winter state.
I' like to add "ish" to "winter", just a couple of hours of snow doesn't a winter make. The road coming into the parking lot was snow covered when i arrived in the morning (7 ish), but snow had already left that road when i returned approx. 9.30. So much for winter :o. Perhaps there is some more winter coming this coming weekend, fingers crossed ;D
-
So, we received the first sub zero temperatures throughout the NL for the first time in almost 2 years. Just a few below, but anyway.
Of course, i dragged myself out of bed early on the Sunday morning, to my usual "hide out".
1. "Alpen glow", pre-dawn glow on a cozy embrace. An exposure blend to get detail in the moon.
2. Part of the "cow highway" around the little lake (looking away from the water), the path the (semi-wild) cows in the area take to get to the water.
3. "Entanglement", fronzen detail of said cow highway.
4. Ice structure
5. "Lost branch", i helped it onto the ice ;D
Interested to hear what you guys think.
-
Great winter-series, Hans. Also the snow-images. !
I like especially that 'Alpen glow'. !
-
colour in the first one is great, composition as well
good series
regarding tonality, the forelast could be weed ice at its best :D
-
Love the "Lost Branch". Very poetic.
-
Love your photo project, very nice picture of all the seasons.
-
Thank you very much John, Thomas, Akira and Bent. I appreciate your feedback very much! I'm also glad that everyone seems to have a different favourite :D
Love the "Lost Branch". Very poetic.
Thanks Akira, it's poetic in a way. I didn't mean to, but if you look closely, the side branches seem to have leaves under the ice. This is nice, but totally incidental, as i kinda pushed the little branch further onto the ice in a random way.
-
Caught some more wintery images, after we'd received proper snow in the NL.
-
Hans, another two enjoyable sequences (#64 & #70).
As someone from a temperate climate, it is nice to still see some ice in these climate changing times. (Less so I acknowledge for those in non-temperate northern & southern climes.)
-
Caught some more wintery images, after we'd received proper snow in the NL.
Love the first two images of the new post. I might have liked to try pano stitching for the first scene with the additional frame to the right.
-
Thanks Hugh and Akira, i very much appreciate you stopping by and commenting.
Love the first two images of the new post. I might have liked to try pano stitching for the first scene with the additional frame to the right.
Thanks Akira. My thought exactly, i do have the broader frame, but there is a troublesome area to the right hand side. So, i decided to leave that out in the end. Thanks for your thoughts, i do sincerely appreciate that!
-
Some more outings, some more images. Some images from 2 outings, one week apart. The first one is a sunrise from a week before the other three, also "sunrise" images. Interested in your opinions.
-
Great sunrise in the first image Hans.
The 'moon' in the second one, is a value added bonus and enhances the atmosphere!
-
Atmosphere is specially lovely on the third image, last batch.
-
Thanks John and Paco, much appreciated!
Yes, the moon was a special treat on an otherwise blah morning. It was as cold as it looks and i hadn't dressed properly. I was expecting weather like in the first image ::)
After a while, the sunrise added some colour to the sky (and therewith the mist) and that gives that atmosphere.
Thanks gentlemen!
-
New installment !!
Went out this morning, boy, the sun comes up early mid May :o
All 3 images taken within one hour, the weather was quite changing ...
-
The golden light in the last one is fabulous! Had I encountered this scene, I would have been pleased to have captured it as well as you.
-

Fully agree. Marvelous scenery!
-
Thank you very much Keith and Akira!
This is a huge compliment, thank you.
-
I've been back there, but this time not such great light unfortunately. Still showing some shots, at least there is more water in the pond then in some of the other images earlier in this thread.
First one with a tiny bit of colour in the sky, the other ones during blue hour.
-
Hans, In the blue hour one, the composition complements the solid looking tree nicely.
-
Hans, more evocative images from Cartierheide and +1 to what Keith has said.
It pays viewers I think to flick from your three recent blue hour images back to your three previous golden hour set of images from May - what great contrasts in their look - especially the (same) last tree in each of the three images in the two sets.
-
Thanks much Keith and Hugh!
@Hugh, that tree is pretty much on my usual way in and out of this area, so i'm kinda partial to it as i see it pretty much every time and in every kind of (light) situation.
Thank you for your comments.
-
Nice work Hans.
-
Nice work Hans.
Thanks John!
I'm "just" trying to create a record of my little nature area, much like what you've been doing with Regteheide. Fot that purpose, it seems fitting that the light is not always beautiful in a traditional sense ;)
-
Well, as you could guess, i've been at it again. This time because the heather is in bloom. While in earlier years there wasn't much blooming heather due to drought, this time it's much better.
Went out early morning, got some nice views and some early morning mist. The light actually got better somewhat later in the morning.
-
Hans, this is a most impressive living landscape. Thank you.
-
A real treat, Hans!
I wanted to go to one of the fields in the early morning but haven't found the opportunity yet. Your images convinced me to go sooner rather than later.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Great images, Hans!
-
Thanks very much for your positive comments Hugh, Peter and Luc, i appreciate that very much.
-
Keep them coming, very nice. A beautiful landscape. Enjoying your photos.

Well ... went back the other week, got up before dawn and found myself alone in my favourite little park ;D
Aproaching autumn, nice morning fog, spider webs are out and they're "catching" the condensation. I hope you like this batch.
-
You have been busy Hans (thank you), and so too have the spiders in 4 & 6. ;D
I like the subtly of the misty early morning colours.
-

I like the subtly of the misty early morning colours.
Thanks Hugh!
The spiders sure have been busy. I also liked the mist catching the early morning glow. There was a bit more than maybe is apparent in these images. The tree in #1 is part of multiple sets earlier in this thread, so you can compare and see that the mist hid the background nicely this time (there is a whole forest in the background).
-
Another installment, i keep boring you all with my pictures of this little nature area close to me. This time some early autumn colours and some 'shrooms. Also, for the first time in this thread, the gate through which i enter the actual fenced area (where the 'wild' cows roam).
I hope you like them, interested to know.
1. Backlit grasses
2. Still some heather there, but autumn colours starting to show, pre-dawn
3. Autumn colour kissed by first light
4. focus stack of a small group of very small mushrooms
5. focus stack of detail of a fly agaric
6. 'nother mushroom in its environment
7. The entry gate on my side of town, bathing in golden morning light
-
I like it :)
The light on the last picture is awesome.
-
Really nice series! Both - Light and subject work well together. Thank you
-
Thank you very much Bent and Erik, much appreciated.
I must say i personally like the light in the last one as well. I saw it when on my way back to the car. Such light happens only in this time of year, because of the edge of the forest (out of picture) over which the sun has to shine, in summer is gets too high and harsh much too soon, in winter it doesn't get over the edge in this position.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
-
The thread has grown to be a great series, Hans!
I particularly like the first and second one from September 11 post and the last one from the latest post. You captured pleasant atmosphere.

Fully agree here, fine shots here all along!
-
Me too!
Plus 1.
Hans, I find your studies of this wonderful area anything but boring. :)
I like it :)
The light on the last picture is awesome.
-
Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting. And such flattering comments at that
Thanks Hugh, Fons and Akira. I'm trying my best to "document" this little piece of nature throughout the seasons and years. Of course because i like it a whole bunch, but also because it is so close ;D
-
I look forward to new entries in your series. I was not disappointed. Thanks for posting these!
-
Thanks Keith, much appreciated.
No pressure at all huh ;) ;D
-
Really loved the pattern of Sun's rays in the first image.
-
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Govind, much appreciated!

Inspired by John Geerts' recent post of an afternoon at Regte Heide (https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=806.75;topicseen), i'm posting my images of the Cartierheide from the same afternoon.
I went out for a walk in the area with my wife and we had beautiful and changeable weather. When i decided to head back with my camera gear, (unfortunately) the weather had decided to change to more sunny and blue sky type. Anyway, still some mood left.
Hope you enjoy these as i've enjoyed John's images.
Oh ... and i decided to leave the planes in some of the images. It happens to be a fact of life here, being so close to Eindhoven Airport :(
-
is this in NL?
Hans, Hans, Hans.
-
is this in NL?
Hans, Hans, Hans.
Thanks a lot Jakov.
This is in the NL, most certainly. Close to the Belgian border though ;D
It is literally within 5 Km from my house (and therefor so accessible to me).
Thanks for the praise, the inspiration comes from John's thread about the Regte Heide.
-
Went back (about a week ago) one Sunday morning. Drab weather, not feeling inspired much. Still got some shots of trees in moody weather.
-
So, it's been a while. I mean that i've posted pictures in this thread of "De Cartierheide". I've been a couple of times with the family. Now i went back during a sunset with my camera.
Interested in your opinions.
-
#4 has very nice colours, it is also seen on #5
Nice images.
-
Agree - some wonderful colours in this set Hans. Nice to see the northern transition from spring into summer.
-
Thanks Bent and Hugh for stopping by and commenting, i appreciate that.
Yeah, spring is really coming, no denying that (even though it's raining cats 'n' dogs while i type this :( ).
-
More good shots. I like both the trees w/shallow DOF and trees w/deep DOF. Shallow DOF is more difficult; one needs more space between photographer and tree.
-

Thanks much Keith. Yeah, i was practicing a bit with various levels of DOF. I'm glad you liked some of those :)
-
Time for another installment. Tried for some different views and compositions from most of the previous images here. Hope you like.
Went just before sunset, ended quite a bit after :D
-
Very nice images indeed, worth to visit this area at some point ;)When using leaves or 'other' up close to blur the foreground I use the old mantra; Get closer - As close as possible to really blur them out completly
-
Thanks Erik for stopping by and commenting, very much appreciated!
This area is certainly worth a visit, but some other activities next to this should be in order, it is such a small area :)
-
Another fine series - I especially like the mood in the last two images.
-
Thanks Lars, much appreciated.
For me, especially the mood of the last one is something that i haven´t seen often in this area. I mean, with the moon being out, but still the last remainder of sunset touching the birch tree.
-
Agree. The inclusion of the moon shot is a good reminder of how a scene changes in the low light hours and the opportunities that this presents.
Another fine series - I especially like the mood in the last two images.
-
Thanks much Hugh! I really appreciate you stopping by and commenting.
-
I also like the atmosphere of the very last one!
-
Nice series again, Hans. I also like the mood in the last image.
-
Thank you very much dear Akira and John! I am glad you like (some of) the pictures.
I happen to like the last one quite much myself.
-
The second one is great. The last, with the Moon, is sublime!
-

Wow, thank you Ian, i'm blushing!
-
Went back last weekend and found my little area in some juicalicious fog. Arrived before sunset, heather being past its peak i had to "pull out" the purple colours a bit in post ;)
-
Joe Cornish look him up, Hans!
-
Joe Cornish look him up, Hans!
Thanks Fons, but that's way too much honour. Unless you mean i need to take one of his classes/workshops (that might be a good idea).
I am a big fan of Simon Baxter, who's just had an exposition together with Joe.
-
Nope Hans, you have nailed these four! ;D

I am truly glad with the compliments. But i must say, the feeling of the very silent early morning in this area, no distractions at all was very nice.
-
Nope Hans, you have nailed these four! ;D
Indeed :)
-
Thank you very much Bent!
-
Hans, very nice images and the fog adds a mystic touch.
-
Thanks very much Luc!
... and the fog adds a mystic touch.
It certainly did. These images wouldn´t have been able without it ;D

I must be honest, the glowing bit was something that i only discovered back home :o
-
Back again with another installment. Went out when we received some snow sometime ago. Difficult conditions, but beautiful.
Two fit this thread, interested to hear what you think. One pano and one of my favourite tree (makes its appearance more than once in this thread :) ).
-
Hans, your treatment of this park gets better and better.
Stay warm!

Lovely snowy shots, Hans.

Great shots Hans!
-
Thanks Hugh, John and Fons for stopping by and commenting, really appreciated!
Yeah, this time was special. I mean the weather, not necessarily my "treatment" of it ;D
-
The lone tree shot is very nice!,
I would recommend a crop to the bottom to have less grass, I would suggest to have same amount and grass above and below the tree at the root.

Thanks for look-seeing and the nice suggestion Erik, i appreciate that very much.
I'll have to give the crop suggestion a go in my editing software, i usually crop by feel and this felt good to me.

It's been a minute, but since the last series of photos i've switched to mainly shooting film (the analog stuff). So, while i do go back regularly, i don't shoot as many photos anymore here.
Here is one from quite recent (beginning of February) during a hoar frosty and foggy sunrise. This is my favourite and most photographed tree in this little nature area.
4x5 Kodak Portra 160, 210mm @ F/32.

Very nice graduation of colours!

Hans very nice!

Hans, I have always enjoyed your Cartierheide images and this one is no exception.
I think that Erik has summed up the image correctly.

Great romantic shot with these soft colours, Hans

Thanks alot Fons, Hugh and John.
Don't blame the photographer ;D ;D. I just showed up to this beautiful scene covered in hoar frost with the haze/fog in the air and did the large format dance, went home and developed and scanned the negative. The star here is mother nature and kodak portra 160 8) 8)
I appreciate your comments very much!
The reason i used the 210mm lens (roughly 65-ish mm on FF) is that otherwise i had to walk through the frosted grass. I didn't want to do that and stayed on the walking path.
Thanks much!
