Title: Portraits of Camera gear.
Post by: null on March 10, 2016, 02:04:50
I did not see this on the forum, I prefer the term "Portrait". I've seen gear shots in discussions, if I missed a dedicated thread- please merge this.

Just a place to show gear, rare, common, mint, beater- I'm sure there is a lot of unusual camera equipment and optical equipment owned across this board. Thought it would be fun to see it.

Taken with a Nikon E3, 60/2.8 Micro-Nikkor, and SB-29. I made an AC adapter to keep the E3 going, it still works.

The humongous 300 mm f/2 AIS here on a pentapod with F4 and a 2X TC.

Later I sold of the 300 as I got tired of getting bad bruises all over when carrying that boat anchor in the field. The camera support now is Sachtler ENG 2CF HD and a Video20 Fluid Head for long and heavy lenses.

A few years ago, I encountered a guy with a really weird camera contraption in Kew Gardens, London. He had a 3-D Stereo rig for stills and video using synchronised Nikon D800 cameras. First time I have seen the beefiest 150 mm class Sachtler tripods in use outside cinematography.... The massive video fluid head alone must have cost the equivalent of a small car.

The "Safari Dream Lens" of the '80s, a 200-400 mm f/4 Nikkor ED, here on its designated position atop the Sachtler ENG 2 CF HD tripod with the Video 20 Fluid Head. CPU-modified of course like virtually all my manual lenses. For once Nikon managed to make a sturdy cantilevered tripod foot. Thus proving this feat *can* be done.

Less than 500 units were made, so it is a quite elusive lens to track down. Took me nearly 15 years to find a pristine sample at a reasonable price. Despite its vintage, the lens is super sharp and an ideal companion for working with landscapes and details. Would prefer one of its modern sibling for safaris though, as the focusing of the 200-400 AIS is on the slow side thanks to its bulk and massive weight. I used the 200-400 AFS VR (1) on my trip to South Africa in 2009. While the modern lens was perfect for wildlife, it cannot hold a candle to the old 200-400 when it comes to landscapes.

Oh, those days of modifying the Noct ... sparks flying everywhere ... the sound and smell of a Dremel at high revs ... Must be experienced to be believed. Thanks for bringing back the memories, Erik.

My current set of Nocts should be documented too, but this has to wait until  return from a medical appointment. Meanwhile, one has to do with the meagre substitute of a 43-86 mm Zoom-Nikkor (latest version) with its CPU modification to make it compatible even to the lowest end of the Nikons, in this case an IR-modified D40X. The 43-86 is excellent for IR, by the way.

That is some serious Glass!

This is the oldest Nikkor that I've ever shot with- was sent to me for cleaning, was opaque when received. It came out quite nice.

I tested it out, sent it to the happy owner. Construction was very similar to the Canon 50/3.5 Serenar that came a bit later. Canon used to sell their cameras with Nikon lenses. My Nikkor 5cm F1.5 came with a Canon III on the back-end of it.

For any Leica CL owners, the Canon 50/1.5 fits on the camera in the original pouch case made for the body+40/2. Many of the "portraits" being put up are from an old Backup I found, taken with a Nikon E3 DSLR. Maybe 100 made? It still works.

Thanks mate for rubbing in the fact I have the poor mans version of the Summicron  2/35 ;D ;D ;D

It's a nice lens but with too much coma for nighttime work, lights look very weird in the corners and I think its due to the coma.

Any advise for a tiny Leica lens, around 35mm, f/2 or faster that does have ultra smooth boke, classic character but performs well for low light night shots?

A shot OF the 35/1.7 Ultron Asph to keep this on-topic...with the 50/1.5 LTM Nokton and their Namesake camera.

The 50/1.5 Asph Nokton and 35/1.7 Asph Ultron are both very good, I prefer the Black version over chrome.

3x 1200mm (2x fixed, 1x zoom)

The shorter lens in the background is the AiS 1200mm/11 ED

In the foreground the older K 1200mm/11 lens head with a focussing unit. As I later realized through Roland's list, happens to be the first produced (80 in total). Is part of the flexible set of 4 lens heads (400mm, 600mm, 800mm, 1200mm) with the extra focus unit Nikon offered in 1975. It is still a very good optical performer these days. The MFD of 45 meter limits indoor use a bit and the size and shape triggers fun conversations with airport security people at the security gate ;) If used with the 2x TC, a pentapod is recommended though (i.e. for a moonshot. Combined with a DX camera, the moon is way too large to fit on the sensor :()

AiS 360-1200mm/11
(http://www.pbase.com/andrease/image/137332909/original.jpg)

The zoom is the better choice for candid shots of other photogs (candid by possible distance that is). Haven't tried dynamic street photography with it :)

It is not, by far. The 360-1200, or for that matter, the 800 or 1200 mm lens heads with the AU-1 focusing adapter, really needs dedicated support. Pentapods or a massive fluid head on an equally robust (not necessarily heavy) tripod.  I routinely use the Sachtler ENG 2 CF HD and the Video 20 Fluid head for these lenses.

wrt to the lenses and support of the lenses:
I know that perfect support needs better support, but sufficient support is sometimes sufficient as well. As always, it depends on the requirements. (sufficient = sufficient for me)

I must give Andy the nod in this case. I understood Andy's post in such a what that all lenses presented, including whatever camera the woman is holding, is capable of 1200mm.

Added: My comment was just a silly one, the only clue I have as to how much support is needed, is from what Bjørn and others have written here.

A summing-up image from a recent article I wrote about 24-70 mm f/2.8 lenses for Nikon and Canon. Besides the brand native lenses I included Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC and the Sigma 24-70/2.8. Appointing an overall winner was not easy as each lens had its weak and strong points. However, seen as a whole, the native lenses did ever so slightly perform better than the third-party offerings, albeit margins were narrow. Factor price into the equation and the ranking might be different too.

I might try to do an effort and translate that article written in Norwegian into (pseudo-)English?

Yes, lucky as this dragonfly landed on the rubber ring . Its wings were trembling. That happened already with butterfly. Perhaps they have this behavior at the end of their life. I got this picture end of august.

A  Nikon Df with suggestions for a basic lens kit. On the wide side: 24 mm f/2 Nikkor AIS or 28 mm f/2 AI. For the long end: 85 mm f/1.8 Nikkor-H (K, modified to AI)  and the 105 mm f/2.5 Nikkor AI. Mix and match as required.

All of these CPU-modified for maximum compatibility with modern Nikons including the Df.

One for each, M9 and M Monochrom with J-3+ lenses. I put one layer of mylar tape on the RF cam of the J-3+ on the M Monochrom to optimize for deep-yellow/orange filters. Color filters produce a shift towards infinity, using a thin tape corrects for the back-focus.

A rewind to film-based UV photography. The F4 loaded with Fuji RTP film combined with the UV-Nikkor 105 mm f/4.5 lens, Nikon FF filter in a hinged AF-1 mount, and the SB-140 flash formed the base foundation for my UV photography during the early '90s.

Decades later, I still use the same UV-Nikkor lens and SB-140 flash, so these were made to standards almost unheard of today. Food for thought, perhaps.

I had one of these like-new, in a box. Went for a good price to someone in Japan. The lens makes you want to use it. The "Anastigmat Special" is an "Ektar" lens. Kodak lenses marked "Ektar" are good. I should look for a broken camera to convert the lens to Leica mount.

Let's see... 391 different optical designs, 581 models, 1147 series/variants (many of them are trivial though)
I'm sure there are more that I don't know about. For example I know the AIS 50/1.8 (Japanese model) originally had brass focus helix, later changing to aluminium. Not something you would know unless you opened up the lens. I'm sure there are many other internal changes that I missed...

Me too. Lovely set you have. They don't make lenses like that any more.
If you get a chance, send me the details of your 3.5cm and 5.8cm lenses as they are not very common...

My little collection of AIS lenses (with the exception of 55mm f/3.5 which is of latest vintage).
Very nice kit you have there ... CPU conversions all look very neat, maybe I should do the same with some of mine.
You seem to prefer short teles, I'd be tempted to add an AI 50/1.8 (the extra speed over the 55/3.5 is sometimes useful) and an AI 20/3.5 to fill out your wide range a bit more :)

Funny :) . Was this intended, or did it "happen" ?
But it begs the questions what will be your strategy to fill the 35 year "void" from 1975 until 2010 ? :D
.....

It started when I tried a few and liked them very much.

I don't want/can't have everything. :D

This is useful to know...

I can tell my wife, "Yeah- but THIS guy has almost 1000 lenses!"

"CM" makes much more sense for focal length markings. I've only seen a few lenses properly marked in "millimeters", and it was a 51mm lens.

Moving from time series to focal length series: i.e. 4x 300mm lenses
from left to right: f5.6, f4, f2.8, f2
(750gr, 1450gr, 3100gr, 7100gr)
No f4.5?

Thanks Roland, adding cpu is really rewarding as the lenses are used, not only collected and allows freedom to use without limitations on both consumer and higher end bodies. Portability/compactness is cruicial for me in selection of the short teles; the longer range is now covered by the 300 f/4 PF/TC-14E, although I have so far kept my AF 300 mm f/4 as backup. I do have a 50 f/2 K which I left unchipped so far due to the non-linear aperture and also because I tend to use the AFS 50 f/1.8 instead, which will then exchange space with the 55mm in the bag when needed. The very wide end is covered by my 12-24mm workhorse; my AF 20mm f/2.8 sees very little use these days, nor the AF 60mm; these were dedicated to underwater photography in the film days.

John: You didn't "miss" anything. Haven't shown the picture before. Just responded to your question with this old photo.
Bjorn: No, I don't have the non-IF ED. The AiS IF ED is not in the photo. I probably forgot it.
Roland: What a story. Glad you got your money back.
Oivind: The photo was shot a few years ago. The PF wasn't around then. Today, I would definitely add it. It is a cute little and well performing lens.

If I find a decent Ai non-IF ED plus a F 300mm/4.5 P over time, I could do a little 300mm comparison - as all optical designs of 300mm Nikkor prime lenses over 52 years (1964-2016) would then be available :) (except the Schottky prototype :().

I've visited the site above, very useful information. I started an Excel spreadsheet but need to update it. Need to break it down by mount, F-Mount, LTM, Contax RF, S-Mount, Retina mount, etc.

a 1950 KMZ Jupiter-3, made in Germany in 1945, and made fit for use by me. The focal length was too short to focus in the original Contax mount, the threads were mismatced, sewing thread used to hold it in. Glass set in a new fixture, modified to Leica standard focal length and set in a Leica focus mount.

I understand about being caught up in variations of lenses. I have a "Fifty-Fifty" collection of Sonnar formula lenses that span from 1934 through to 2016, made by Carl Zeiss Jena, Zeiss Opton, Zeiss/Cosina, Nikon, Canon, Tanack, KMZ, ZOMZ, Valdai, Walz, and now Zenit. Thirty 5cm/50mm in Leica mount alone.

Infrared. Prototype RCA Type C-1 Infrared Scope, circa 1942 and Kodak DCS200ir- 1st one sold. I worked with digital Infrared in the 1980s, the RCA scope was a "mascot" attained from surplus many years before I started on the project. I inherited it from an engineer. The Kodak- called them and had it made, was the first one sold. Both still work.

About a 1922 Ica camera (or it could be a little later). It is a magnificently built instrument of incredible quality and everything is perfectly intact.

About 10 years ago, Mongo modified it to make a 13cm X 6cm image (and modified film advance mechanism). Also changed the lens to one of his Nikkor 120mm f5.6 AM-ED lenses. Used it for a while to shoot panorama-like images using medium format slide film. All the modification were made in a way that the camera can be very easily returned to its original condition.

This B&W image is deliberately grainy and intended to look "old" as the image was taken for a particular purpose at that time some years ago.

I love my lenses - just expresses the feeling differently .... using a lens for its intended purpose is the higher form of affection.

Besides, I have a small car. So not space for everything anyway.

I did notice some very nice items in Atpaula's collection though. The 200-400/4 ED is very uncommon and sets high standards with regard to workmanship and performance alike. The 80-200/2.8 AIS is not equally scarce, but a true gem to behold and use. The 500/5 Reflex is one lens I regret having sold off in my younger and wilder days. Having AFS and MF versions of the 200/2 is laudable. And so on.

I just showed Atpaula's collection to my Wife.

My clever plan works again.

I agree about using lenses, you will not find many pictures on the web actually taken with a Nikkor 5cm F1.5 or a 1936 coated Sonnar. But I also don't want to be the guy that destroys a rare lens like this. I want to be the guy that takes it apart and makes usable again. This one took about 10 hours to get right.

Aguinaldo, that is a very nice collection of gear, thanks for posting. But humble has apparently another meaning in our neck of the woods.

I showed it to the local management over here, she finally admits that during all these years I have restrained myself enormously in aquiring camera gear  ;D

Rosko- thankyou, I'm lucky to have a Daughter that is relaxed around a camera. My wife came up with her name, "Nicole"- I'm convinced it was subliminal suggestion from having "NIKON" pointed at her during the pregnancy.

Mongo thinks not so humble - indeed, very enviable. More importantly, it looks like an entire wall of lenses at
Map Cameras in Japan.......and that is really saying something !!  Also, nice to see they are loved and looked after and not stored in a car boot (sorry Bjorn   ;D)

I really love this stuff. :)
Thank you Mongo.

I love my lenses - just expresses the feeling differently .... using a lens for its intended purpose is the higher form of affection.

Besides, I have a small car. So not space for everything anyway.

Believe it or not, I bought this 200-400mm f/4 four years ago, new in box, never used before, at a very reasonable price.
This, along the big fast AF-S (mainly the 200mm f/2), the Noct, the 80-200 f/2.8 Ais and the 8mm f/2.8 fisheye are the highlights for me.
Also the 15mm f/5.6, which looks like the venerable 13mm f/5.6 (two years ago I spent half an hour at Greys of Westminster staring a 13mm (30k sterling pounds)).

I said humble because of Richard's collection. Come on, 140 Nikon F bodies?
I have to say that I spend my money in things that I love, photography and travelling. Not much left in the bank account.
Maybe someday I can come here and regret for all this, but, who knows when I'll die.
Some friends of mine prefer to accumulate houses, apartments and large bank account. Not my case.
Lucky to have a wife that supports it, morally speaking. :)
I'm glad that you like to see it.
I love to see your collections too.

No need to defend yourself Aguinaldo, again it is a very beautiful and desirable collection.
Bjørn already mentioned some of the highlight lenses (80-200/2.8 ais, 200-400/4 ais, 200/2 ais). Another small gem in your collection is the 6x magnifying DW-4 finder on the F3; all the beautiful lenses can still be used on digital, regretably no replacable finders on digital Nikons.
I also still have mine, once in a while take a look through it, agreed it mirrors the view but it places the OVF vs EVF discussion in a completely different perspective. Anyone interested should once have a look through it.

Aguinaldo, I could not help but to notice you also have a grey rear lens cap on your TC14E ;) I do it also, to easily and quickly see which TC is which,,,

The TC-E's came with the grey front caps (the ones that got stuck if mounted incorrectly  ::) )

Again, an amazing lens set!

Lenses are like stock, some you keep for a very long time, some you sell quickly, on some you loose money and with others you win some.

When I need cash I sell some unused glass and when money is more abundant I invest in new lenses again, by buying low I keep the depreciation under control.

Last few years were on the low and now we are on the up again :)

Aguinaldo, impressive collection!  You don't have much earthquake in Brazil, right?  In Japan, a collector like you wouldn't store his lenses this way...

Of course, you are not just a collector.  You make many great images with these lenses, and do much more justice to the lenses than the normal collectors.

D600 and the Nikkor 35/2 K  version.  I had an Ai sample but that flared enormously. This one performs much better including stars in the sun and without flare. Can also be due to the sample-diversification, I guess...
Seems strange since they have the same optics.

Early multicoated 35/2 lenses seem prone to separation. I have a Nikkor-O.C with separation around the edges between two middle elements, it shows as a silvery ring around the edge. Your picture shows a silvery reflection in the same place, might be a small amount of separation. I once had two K 35/2 (by chance with consecutive serial numbers), one with a bright colored reflection in the same place across the whole element, and another with semicircular reflection on one half. These extra glass-air surfaces can cause reflections that result in flare. Might explain the difference in flare?

Yes, that might be an explanation. It was a very heavy used lens by an US press-agency.  The serial number of the flared one was 9412xx  The one I have now is 9028xx.

Still have the lens but the adapter doesn't fit my a7S anymore, might have to do some tinkering to use it again.

So the new Sony mounts are stronger - less flex - but also tighter, (potentially) causing issues with adapters.

I have both the 2/45 and 2.8/90 Contax G lenses on my A7 and like them a lot.

My 85 mm lenses are usually more humble.

The AIS 85 mm f/1.4 is an old favourite, the newer AFD is good as well, and the latest AFS 85/1.4 might  be another [minor] step up the ladder.

The secret weapon is the Repro-Nikkor 85/1 of pupilary fame as its entrance and exit pupils are nearly twice the size of the lens itself. But lenses are not the topic for this thread.

Here is my first Nikon Df with the 85/1.4 AIS Nikkor. (camera later to become a 3-D puzzle, expertly solved by our very own 'Dr. Lens' aka Erik Lund)

I have to say : I am not so good using this Nex 5 body...I definitely don't like its interface and so I can't use its possibilities optimally. ::). So difficult to find the function you need among the several menus.

I like Buddy's bonus shot with the vinatge radio as a background prop, although valve radios were already on the way out when the Nikon F first came along (1959).    Film cameras have now largely headed the same way as the valve radio.

The radio probably has from 4 to 7 vacumn tubes in it.  I shudder to think how many gazillion transistors must be in every one of the many VLSI chips inside one of todays DLSRs.

I have been spending most of my photography time exploring the world of adapted lenses.  Nikon rangefinder lenses in LTM/M39 mount with M mount adapter on my Fuji X-Pro2.  Shooting almost exclusively with the ACROS simulation in camera is a real joy with these old lenses.  I have added a couple to the group since this shot.

Great sunset silluet shot! Looks almost like a city skyline ;)

Thank you Erik. With the Nikon F that was pretty much intended. Not quite sure why it would not work with the Nikon F3 with pretty much the same setup. Might have to give that one another try.

Nice to see you on here as well George. I also noticed John posts here on occasion.
Will take the 28mm f3,5 PC Nikkor with me today, but it will mostly be nature shots again. The PC Nikkor is a great landscape lens.

I'm green with envy over your collection of Rangefinder Nikkors btw. Would love to own the 13,5cm, 5cm and 3,5cm and a camera to use them with, which in my case would rather be a Nikon S2 then something digital.

I lost in an auction for a 9 blades 5cm lens just yesterday. The need for speed is one thing, and I use most of my lenses wide open most of th etime, but when stopping down a perfectly rounded aperture would sure be something sweet.

Hi George. Welcome abord. My brick and mortar camera dealer just let me have some minutes wioth the XPro2. She really feels soooo god in my hands. On very rare occasion that happens.

Congratulations to your new tool, and that camera is a tool, no toy. Great to hear she pairs well with adapted old glass.

Thank you Frank for the welcome and good to see a familiar face here Buddy.

Good luck on the next try for the 9 bladed 5cm.  You know how well I like them ;)  But I was not bidding on yours.  I am going to try M42 next on the XP2.  I have an inexpensive Super Takumar 28mm f3.5 SMC on the way to me this week.  Wider than that and I will probably have to go with native Fuji glass.  The wide angle adapted Nikkor do not perform very well.

This portrait is of a unusual camera.

The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) has some cameras that they can mount round the neck of wild reindeers. I was fortunated to be with them once they should bring home one of the cameras.

The reindeer with the camera was found in a herd that was going on a snow field. The neck band was released with a remote release transmitter. When the herd had left the snow field, it was just to look for the camera, and hope the reindeers hadn't stepped it too deeply into the snow.

Last is a picture of the camera, actually a big battery with a tiny camera and some more research stuff.

NINA has made a little video where they present the project: https://youtu.be/4ugfC2GL8Q8?list=PLFPXRxUJyJlCzoI-Npd4LTlrUy5QGO7Ru

I'm not showing her this part of the conversation....

I've visited the site above, very useful information. I started an Excel spreadsheet but need to update it. Need to break it down by mount, F-Mount, LTM, Contax RF, S-Mount, Retina mount, etc.

Retina lenses work on the F-Mount via the Deckel adapters, this 50/1.9 Xenon is a classic 1-2-2-1 double-Gauss.

Classic 50s German rendering.

Just read your message.
I also have some kodak retinareflex glass here (for the Retinareflex III).
Where to find this adapter? And does it only properly work on a DF or on other FX cameras like the D700 or D750, too?

Thanks in advance!

Günther, going by the picture posted of the Df with adapter it will work on all Nikon F mount cameras. The skirt where on a Nikkor lens the apurture ring resides is short enough notto interfere with the Ai indexing tab on the camera mount

These are really nice, JA.

Here is the Df with one of the strangest (and perhaps ugliest) lenses around:  The Lensbaby 3 G.

It's a 50mm 2.0 basic lens, and aperture can be adapted by inserting slices before the lens.

Lensbaby makes some pretty nice and affordable special effect lenses. One thing I always wanted to try however is one of the fast C mount lenses. They do not cover the full 24x36mm frame but the center portion should be interesting.

Before I ever will try a C mount lens on a DSLR however I really need to explore the possibilities of using medium format lenses on the F mount with the addition of tilt and shift adapters.

With the help of Chris I managed an early mock-up of a possible setup like that

A snapshot of the living room cupboard - with something for me as unusual as a camera display.

From left to right:

This actually was a test shot with the AFS 40 mm f/2.8 DX Micro-Nikkor on the D500. There is a curious lack of momentum for this mini-version of the AFS 60/2.8. The image quality seems to be outstanding, but the working distance is awfully short. Perhaps that is the reason this lens never took off? I got a pristine sample for USD 100 and couldn't resist, that is my excuse.

Post by: Akira on June 27, 2016, 14:04:22
Sorry to nit-pick, but apparently it is an FE2...

I've had two samples of 40/2.8 micro.  Both suffered from the decentering: the image in the 15-20% of the right part of the frame was smeared.  I brought them to Nikon service with the test shots on the tripod.  They said the lenses were within Nikon's tolerance.

I potentially liked the lens as all-rounder with my beloved D7000.  The bokeh was much nicer than that of 35/1.8G.  Also, the 40 micro showed much less LoCA.  But I was very disappointed by the decentering and have never looked back.  Sad to say.

Oops - you are correct, Akira. I stand corrected. The engraved model designating was hid behind the grip of the motor drive. Now I only have to locate the FM2 that should be somewhere... Probably huddles together with the old F, F2, F3, F4, and F5 in another less accessible cupboard. Or in another location altogether.

Bjørn, as you should know, the shape of the "forehead" of the pentapriism cover and the concentric film rewind knob and ISO dial are the easy points to tell FM2 and FE2 from each other.  :)

If you say so .. must be at least 20 odd years since I used any of these cameras ... a lot of memory erosion might have happened over such long time spans ....

A pity your 40/2.8 Micro suffered from manufacturing flaws. My sample is clean as a whistle when it comes to performance issues. However, given the lightweight plastic wrapping the optics are delivered with, perhaps no wonder it can turn out misaligned or decentered.

I'll keep the lens as the DX companion to the trusty beater AFD 60/2.8 Micro-Nikkor that has served me well for a long time in studio settings.
Title: Re: Portraits of Camera gear.
Post by: Akira on June 27, 2016, 22:40:25
Bjørn, noworries, just a nit-pick.

As for 40/2.8 micro, I really like the design itself.  The most vulnerable part (the moving inner barrel) is protected when the dedicated hood is attached, similar to the way more expensive 24-70/2.8 zoom.   Although the hood makes the working distance close to zero, the lens works really nicely.

By a *very* strange twist of fate, today I was reunited with a lot of Nikon cameras that I thought no longer existed.

Thus I received the following items,

Nikon S with 5 cm f/2
Nikon S2 with 5 cm f/1.4
Nikon S3 Special Jubilee Edition (reconstructed model 2005? not sure must check2000) with the dedicated 50 mm f/1.4 Nikkor
Nikon SP with 5 cm f/1.4

Nikon F2 DATA with MD-2 motordrive and Fisheye-Nikkor 8 mm f/8

Sundry small items of which the clip-on light meter for the first Nikon F prism finder was most remarkable.

All in good to excellent working order and all for free.

It is a long story to tell and I might narrate it later. Now I'm just stunned and busy unpacking the gear. Will post photos later.

As a consequence of today's entirely unexpected events, I had to rearrange the living room cupboard.

The black Nikon S3 AP is promoted to the top shelf.

Next level below, from left to right:

Nikon SP, Nikon S3 (2000 Jubilee), Nikon S2, Nikon S.

My possible urge for rangefinders has been amply met with a very wide margin, I'd say. However, as long as they come for free, I'm not the one to complain :D

Now I have to find place for the other stuff that got relocated.

My red (actually, infra red) Nikon D5300 with a very unusual lens, the Zoom-Nikkor 200-600 mm f/9.5 AIS. This lens in various optical configuration stayed long in the Nikkor lens line-up,  in fact all the way from 1961 to 1983. However, the better performing f/9.5 constant aperture version with AIS coupling saw a very short production run, only 1981-83, for about 500 units. About 5.000 units all variations taken together left the factory, thus it is not surprising few today ever encountered this early zoom design.

It focused pretty close, to 4 m, and a dedicated close-up attachment extended the near range to 2.5 m which for a 600 mm lens is amazing by any standard. This 'kit' attachment was decorated with two very distinct, bright orange stripes.

The optical performance of the 200-600 was good to surprisingly good, although no ED elements found their way into the optics and thus some CA is detectable. This is the reason I mainly use the 200-600 for IR, for which it does very well all things considered.

Towards the end of its production, Nikon introduced the 'faster' and much heavier Zoom-Nikkor 180-600 mm f/8 presumably with the aim of replacing the venerable old-timer. However, the newer ED lens although in production up to 1998 never took off as a volume seller and in fact, the total run for the 180-600 never exceeded approx. 700 units over 21 years of production. (I have one of them as well so might post on that model later).

The problem I have with an L-plate is the bulk. I made out for myself that most of my "tripod" pictures would be "landscape" so I decided for the (lesser) bottom plate.  By the way, I like very much the products of Realy Right Stuff (RRS) http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Quick-Release/Camera-Plates-L-Plates/Nikon/D5. I'm also using their quick release "Arca" clamps and lens plates.

I was young, broke, and thoughtless when I sold mine all those years ago. Money went quickly, but the lens would have persisted to this day.

Saw, but never used, the clip-on meter for a Nikon F with prism finder. I used my first Nikons with a hand-held meter, Sekonic if memory serves , before the Photomics arrived on the scene to assist users like me insisting on slide film..

Funny you should say that, because pretty much the same thing happened to me. I owned the 85/1,8 as a (poor) student and sold it to finance other equipment and regretted it ever after. I've searched for another mint sample for years and finally found one about two years ago. It has a very gentle and agreeable rendering.

It is the Voigtlander 40mm f/2.  The Nikon 45mm is even smaller.  Here they are side by side, including their similar cut-off cone hoods.

In my experience, the Voigtlander is at least as good optically and better handling - the aperture ring of the Nikon is just too narrow and close to the focus ring - and the Voigtlander is the same price new as the Nikon is used.

Hi John,

i love(!) the colors of the little Voigtländers. But i agree with the bokeh: It is just "ok" to sometimes bad. But it has very good ergonomics for its size and it is a little tank in terms of build quality. Focus ring is perfectly damped!
