Very nice Michael :)
Happy July!
-
My first--and thus far only--photo of the month is a test of a new-to-me 50mm ƒ/2 AI Nikkor. As usual, I'm terrorizing my favorite model Christie the Wheaten Terrier who does not seem at all pleased with my efforts. No matter, the lens is great.
-
Nice shot of Christie. She seems to be skeptical but at ease so I imagine (and hope) your air-conditioner is back on.
Oh, and your 50mm f/2 Ai takes a good picture too.

I think Christie believes I turned off the air conditioner just to torment her. But she's more contented now that it's working again.
And I'm very happy with this particular lens. Christie and I thank you for the compliment.

True. The photo was taken at a large rapid-charging facility for electric buses for the Greater Oslo region. Must have been nearly 100 units there waiting for their high-tension fling :) However the deviant unit was lined up with the other in the charging queue but how would one charge a diesel bus by high voltage??? No petrol or diesel filling stations where seen.
Bent, congrats on the Z8 -- a new 180-600 Z awaits next?
-
Finally, we got some rain after a very hot and dry June
Shot from the side of the road, the rain above the mountain caught up to me, but it was just light rain for maybe a couple of mins
I was on my motorcycle, and I dried up quickly

Anyone entering the center of Amersfoort soon will be surprised by an alienating scene. From 3 July, a gigantic polar bear will unabashedly empty its bladder in the canal from the quay at Museum Flehite. This 'Pissing Polar Bear' is the latest work by Florentijn Hofman, known among other things for the rubber ducks that float across the seas worldwide. The giant sculpture is part of the Kunst & Zoo family exhibition. This can be seen from 8 July to 19 November to celebrate the 75th anniversary of DierenPark Amersfoort.
"With this sculpture, Hofman makes short work of the cuddly image of this powerful and brutal animal. That brutality matches perfectly with the subject that the artwork ultimately revolves around, namely global warming. The ice is melting, the polar bear's habitat is getting smaller and smaller. This polar bear has left its natural environment and has stepped ashore on the quay of Museum Flehite in Amersfoort aan Zee. The beast behaves just as antisocially in the human world as humans treat the living environment of the animals".

I'm currently experimenting with my ultrafast 'X-ray' lenses and composite panoramas made with them. The core of each image is very sharp even considering they are f/0.75 (!) designs. however angular coverage is quite restricted if the rendition should meet 'normal' quality criteria. For stitching the aim is to generate so much overlap that only the core remains and thus more broader views can be manifested. However, due to the inherent very short depth-of-field at f/0.75, en focused at 50-100m such lenses have a narrow DOF zone.
Here is a test image using N=113 images (small jpgs) with the Rodenstock 50mm f/0.75 on the Z9. I made a provisional nodal slide for the lens to reduced the parallax errors in stitching and by and large such errors were reduced although not completely eliminated. I need to fine-tune the slider better, I suppose.
Suburban sprawl encroaching on arable fields are, unfortunately, a common sight around most conurbations in my country. It is extremely short-sighted to use the precious and limited agricultural soils to extend built-up areas. Less than 3% of our area can be cultivated and we can never hope to be self-supported for food production if this deplorable practice continues.

Birna, those results do looks better bigger as Akira suggested. The separation and detail are something special!
Today, this little one posed for my without fear for a while. I only had the 24-70 f4 with me so, even this is very close as this lens go, it is still a considerable crop. The resulting image square is aprox 2700 by 2700 pixels
-
Thanks, Akira & Paco. Yes, I'm slowly learning by trial and error. Getting the nodal slider correctly aligned is crucial, but it is no secret the stitching engine(/s) can choke on the peculiarities of the 'X-ray' optics. I might move over to using the Z30 instead to get less of the recorded frame being cropped away.
The original image is about 15000 x 6000 pix and as seen by the 100% crop below, there are lots of fine detail. (also visible at the upper edge is a slight registration mismatch, but I didn't bother fixing these as this is purely a test image). Recommended to open the image in a new tab and click it to 100%. That this is f/0.75 and the lens is 60+ years old??
-

Indeed, especially considering that the lens is never designed to focus at this distance AND at f0.75!
-
Actually, as I focused the lens on the house facade and the distance was about 60m, the design criteria of infinity focus was approximated. About 1000 times focal length. Meaning the effective f-number also was close to the nominal f/0.75 (shutter speeds were around 1/15000 sec at ISO100).
These lenses were extremely expensive in their time., It is easy now to realise why. Quality never comes cheap.

Birna : Double self-portrait, and an X-ray scan showing her newly discovered acoustic neurinoma [vestibular schwannoma] (arrowed). At present, I only suffer from severe tinnitus and head aches, however if the tumor grows it can be unpleasant and dangerous even life-threatening, so an operation might be called for in the near future.
The double portrait was taken whilst I was awaiting the latest scan results. Two spirits may not suffice for a trans woman? There are so many hurdles to overcome on the way to a new, brighter, and meaningful existence. One just has to take the challenges as they manifest themselves, and always be prepared for the unexpected. On that path lies danger -- and hope.

I have not done much photography recently and decided that something a little different was in order. So I dug out my 105mm f/4 Micro-Nikkor and my tripod. A stump in the back yard provided a suitable subject. 11 frames and some work in Photoshop yielded this result. It is immediately obvious that I should have extended focus all the way to the bottom of the frame. However, fun was had learning this lesson.

I love the translucency you've captured in the leaves Birna,
I need some tips from Ruth: cucumbers are still a novelty crop for me. 2 in my greenhouse are only growing slowly and so taken ages to produce these cakes.
4 planted outside have produced more vegetative growth, but fruit are barely 2-3 cm long

That must have been an emotional event, Akira....
-
A friend returned a loaner camera (Panasonic GF1) and with it came also the little fisheye lens Meike 3.5mm f/2.8 that I had all but forgotten about. So of course Ruth's cucumbers had to be documented again :)
The angle of view is a healthy 200 degrees and getting parts of your body or fingers into the image is a breeze. Guess my top was bright green!!
The lens is actually quite sharp, but the age of the Panasonic sensor shows and the outcome is so-so. Perhaps better light conditions could have improved the final result? Anyway, it was just a functional test.

After more than 10 years of zoom abstinence I gave in to the 24-120mm.
It's a strange experience but great to see the long way zooms have come.

Great shot, Daniel.
I tried the 24-120 a lot, but unfortunately, nothing for me!

Thank you for the suggestion. It does simplify and strengthen the composition.

Indeed!
I tried the 24-120 a lot, but unfortunately, nothing for me!
I had hoped that the 24-70 would serve as a handy lens when out with the children. It feels strange to return to a zoom after using primes for a few years. The strong vignette in the far corners wide open has dissuaded further use.

Yesterday I went to a "novillada". Carolina may explain better the difference with a normal "corrida de toros""
The whole event is rich in images and symbols. Some beautiful, some hard. Plasticity and raw hand in hand.

This is of course less exciting than Paco's bullfighting ... just an example what the Nikkor 400mm f/4.5 S + TC-14Z can achieve (Z9).

I like your close-up Birna

Looks like hedge bindweed (Convolvulaceae), and hoverfly. That 400 mil looks so appealing!
-
Calystegia x spectabilis. Now recognised as an aggressive invasive species showing very rapid expansion around built-up areas. The hoverfly just enjoyed its dinner :)
I'm very pleased with the 400/4.5 Z, by the way. It is a featherweight as far as long lenses go and very sharp.
-
Out of sheer nostalgia, i replaced the old IR-modified D40X with another similarly modified body, as the first was returned in non-working order from a "friend".
The D40x works well with the AFS 18-140/3.5-5.6 ED G Nikkor and the AF is spot on. Those-- by today's standards -- meagre 10MPix pack a lot of detail so the combination is fun to use.

I loved the closeup Birna.
Beauty, colour, clarity and biological interest
Maybe the 400/4.5 Z would be the ticket if I migrate to the "Z" side from my 300mm PF.....
I've already loved nearly all the 105mm Z macro images ice seen.
But the 400 would help me more with working distance (my preferred subjects all move in split second)
-
I wonder whether the 180-600 Z might be even more tempting. Price is nearly half of my 400/4.5Z and of course, even "cheaper" if you need up towards 600mm as the rather expensive TC-14Z is superfluous. Its max.aperture range f/5.6-6.3 is approximately what the 400/4.5+TC-14Z delivers. I have no real need for the 180-600 however it is tempting to run some test shots with it later this autumn. Perhaps it works well for IR?
If a slightly closer approach is required, the 400 by the way can tolerate additional extension quite well (infinity focus is lost of course).
-
No crying over spilt spirit.

No, the F/4 Z-mount one.

Birna, what do you think about the Z 100-400mm ?
-

More food for thought, thank you Birna.
A smaller, lighter setup might let me use it more when out on walks though.
I've not used any zoom teles for years and have come to accept framing may be non-optimal from time to time.

I’m utterly exhausted after a five day trip in debilitating heat to Fukushima. The last two days were in the proximity of the Daichi nuclear power plant, which I got to visit. The weather was so inhospitable, and the area so devoid of interest (it was effectively stripped of everything and then concreted over), that I left my camera in the bag the entire time. The only two things that even inspired me to pull out my phone were bugs (maybe the same bug?) at Tomioka station when I arrived and left. This was the ‘leaving’ bug.
Daiichi power plant was of course incredibly interesting, and every sight was worth capturing. But photography was forbidden - other than the endless photos TEPCO took of us! But near the end of the tour I was able to hack the system and ask the official photographer to take a photo of me standing in front of the ruins of reactor 1. When/if I receive it from TEPCO I’ll post it here ;-)

The site should be interesting to visit but still scary to me for number of reasons. The grasshopper looks like what we call "tonosama batta" in Japanese. Looks nice.

Yes I was surprised at the relative lack of seagulls along the coast of Southern Spain back in May
