Post by: Birna Rørslett on January 01, 2019, 02:22:55
Post your "blog" contributions here.

No theme (other than what the passage of time creates), no contest implied, a maximum of one picture per day in the actual month and no more than 4 images per month for NG members, up to 30/31 for Supporters. You can distribute the contributions as once per week if you so prefer.

The posted picture(s) must be taken within the designated time period.

Still December 31, 2018 here in Connecticut as I post this, but the December 2018 thread is closed so this is a bit of a cheat.

Taken this afternoon as the rain was beginning to fall in Woodbury. Much more expected tonight. Time Square is going to be wet.

Nevertheless, Happy New Year one and all!

My images relating to the New Year were posted to the thread I started.  This one was grabbed on the way to the Temple for the New Year's visit.

First attempt at night shooting with the new kit. A bit windy so sharpness suffers. This one ended up 2 stops underexposed so bumping' the EV causes some noise (which I am getting less concerned about).
Still need to find a remote timer to allow >30 sec. exposure time.

Hi Akira. Happy New Year to you as well!

That derelict building is just the way I found it this afternoon. It is bizarre perhaps but satisfying to me visually nevertheless. It's a place I've returned to over the years and it seems to frequently have something different inside as one peers through the door frame without a door. Last time I looked it had an assortment of old wooden fruit boxes, quite attractive in their own way. I have a picture of that somewhere as well. :P

An experimental shot with the ancient Novoflex Fernobjektiv 40 cm f/5.6 (from ca 1960) on the Z6. ISO 3200 and 1/3 sec hand-held. The falling snow interacted nicely with VR :D

An irritating issue, for sure. Noise = Noise. It's still there and affecting 'sharpness' and 'clarity' if you try to eliminate it.  The D800E  is much better in this respect.

That is rather surprising to me.  When I processed my D750 hi-ISO images with Adobe CC, I wasn't bothered by the chrominance noise.  I thought ACR seemed to ignore the chrominance noise very efficiently.  The visible remaining noise was mostly the luminance noise.

An impressive project.  Nice.

Apart from the feel good factor of not wasting an existing asset, repurposing a building sometimes enables a quicker build when planning regulations and opposition from political pressure groups are to be considered.  On the other hand activities such as the removal of nasties such as asbestos, lead and arsenic still have to be done as well as making old buidings more earth quake resistant and easier to exit in the event of disasters or fire have to be done - old building or not.  So no free lunches!

That makes sense, Hugh.  That said, though, the Netherlands should not suffer from the earthauake like Japan.  Also, considering the original purpose, the building could be built to last for a long time.  My other concern is its cost for the heating cost.  The efficiency should be considerably low to heat such a huge space.

Yes, it is cheaper to tear a building down. Much cheaper.

First all the asbest-removal, and also all the chemical waste (Oil- Gasoline- etc as a consequence of the locomotive maintenance during 80 years)

Yes Akira, no earthquake cost here. Which results in an easier way for reconstruction.

Heating consists of a pumpsystem and includes a Ground-coupled heat exchanger with solar panels as an addition.  For this purpose the enormous space is divided into four compartiments.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground-coupled_heat_exchanger

Still not a real deep winter as the snow levels are moderate, and temperature insists on being elevated. Finally dropped below -10C today, so we only need a decent snow fall to be "in season".

No masking. For me the interesting thing about the shot is that the pedestrians block the light which is everywhere on that street. It is a sort of human eclipse. Usually the road is filled with cars and bright light.

Yes, I’ve been using the Z6 almost exclusively lately while I learn how to use it best. This is taken with old Nikkor P.C Auto 105mm f/2.5, but the kit zoom is quite nice too.

I'm still learning how to use it best. The Df is so easy to pick up for someone like me who started out with film era nikons and I use it mostly with old MF lenses so setting focus, shutter speed, aperture etc. is quite instinctual.
With Z I'm having to learn how to use autofocus, front dial for aperture, work out viewfinder vs. rear screen, video, and how best to work with files. I'm not sure if it is just shooting conditions, but skies seem to be blown out more often than I like. Because of this, there is a higher level of effort and uncertainty. I expect this will change with practice, so that is what I'm doing. It definitely has some nice advantages - tilting rear screen (I've used this often to shoot from high and low angles) and zoomable display (so nice for manual focus) are very useful.

My Windows laptops typically have 1 - 2 TB SSD storage, sometimes more. Max out the memory and the box will do service for some further time yet. The Linux boxes run well on ~250 GB SSDs, though.

Not really. Photos take up space. A current windows with CS Suite, MS Office and some other RAW Converters and editors can be installed in less than 45GB. The C-Drive on my Laptop is 60GB to leave some temporary space.

Simply clean out the TEMP files and Caches and delete all the backups of earlier windows installations.

128GB SSD is enough. If you need space for DATA too, go for a bigger SSD and create a DATA partition.

Some of the results that we see from architects are simply "because they can", without regard to taste. That has been confirmed to me by a successful architect that we both know....

Here in Arizona, we have examples from Frank Lloyd Wright. an architect that has enjoyed many accolades over some of his designs. While I have nothing against Wright, his design of the Gammage Auditorium is a yawner IMO. I don't see anything particularly wrong with it, except that I don't like that look.  ;)

Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most famous foreign architect in Japan due to his design for the (now demolished) Imperial Hotel.  Its design was not bad, but the Gammage Auditorium looks like a not-so-nice copy of Colosseo in Rome...

Good to see you have your Df back, John,
the 300mm f/2,8 must be similar to the 200mm f/2 when sharpness and oof come to mind
(200/2x tc 1,4=280/2.8),
but not a walkaround lens by no means, although i have.
Thanks Fons. I must say, I am happy to have it back !!  It's an extra joy something what the other camera's are missing.

Yes it should be comparable.  Is the lens design also comparable between the 200/2  and 300/2.8?

And yes, it's heavy. Walk-a-round is possible, good muscle training  ;)  A monopod will help shooting.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with it, except that I don't like that look.  ;)

I agree with you: it’s like a wedding cake 😳

'Working' in the cold is not easy, I was wearing my glasses which are essential in the dark, otherwise I don't see anything, but for photographing I need to take it of.

Well something to learn about, these cold temperatures do not happen too often here.

This is a seemingly randomly composed glimpse of an everyday scene that manages to tell a lot nevertheless. The juxtaposition of the visual elements works very well and the unrest created by the blurred person on the right adds a lot of interest to the outcome. I would have wished for a better and crisper b/w rendition though.

That's a new building? It looks quit old style, in this shot, with the wires.

The office building with the address "Rabinstraße 8, Bonn, Germany" was built from 1994-97 following the plans of Krenz, Meier + Assoziierte. It was used as an educational center for the insurance group "Deutscher Herold", now "Zürich Versicherungen".

In 2016 it was sold to Corpus Siero Developers and rented back by Zürich till the end of 2019, when they will move to their new Headquarters in Cologne near the Central Station and the trade fair buildings, where the Photokina is located (Köln Messe/Deutz).

Starting in 2020 Corpus Siero wants to redevelop the wonderful building with lush roof gardens, huge indoor court and very nicely lit rooms as an Office/Residential mix which will sure not be on the cheap end of the market given its special architecture and prominent location.

(research done by me for you in 30 minutes. I am very interested in the history of my city, esp architecture)...

Thanks Frank

Took this with the V1, and the 18.5mm f/1.8 lens, white balance slightly changed in camera, a flat10 profile, processed in cnx2, reduced contrast on the flowers to control the red highlights,  bent the blue curve adding some to the shadows. The scene was in a darkish corner, the speed was 1/10 sec , and the focus is on the wall.

Woke up to -20C and a very beautiful winter scenery outdoors. A pity I cannot explore it properly as going outside without a breathing mask is impossible these days. Then I look like a female version of Darth Vader and operating a camera is difficult over time. Lots of condensation fogging up my glasses and sloshing around inside the mask. Aaargh.

Still managed this view from the kitchen side of the house. Z6 with PF 300.

Dramatic Iphone, first one maybe Galatea coming? :) and also the colors of the second one. Love the graphics with the silhouettes and the power lines.

That restaurant I´ll like to try. I found one with the same idea in a road in north  India. The owner went to look for some peas and carrots in the backyard to cook for us. Love to see it spreading!

We might go down there for lunch on Saturday, and if we do, I'll mount my 35/1.8 to handle the event. They're releasing a new olive oil from the 2018 harvest, and they're having live music, etc. I'm going to call our daughter to see if she'd like to go with us, it sounds like fun. All depends on my wife feeling better by then, crossing my fingers!  ;)
