I consider this as a Nikon Nikkor lens, I see no indication it should be fake.Do you have the serial number for Ronald?
Do you have the hood or the hood number?
In the list of hoods HB-9 and HB-13 have always been missing,,,

http://www.nicovandijk.net/nikonlenshoodHB.htm

HB-9 would fit - The late version of 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D has the HB-7 lens hood, it's very similar internal and external design also a screwdriver lens.

the first lens that got into my mind is the tokina but that was not the case, its too different. the central group is in charge of focusing while its the front on the tokina :o :o :o

If you hook the CPU up to Birnas CPU programming adapter it will be able to read the lens data and confirm the originality of the lens.

OK, before you send it back please check my questions above TIA
Just saw your short video, the AF seems very fast, very similar to the best of the other AF-D lenses ;)

there's no indication  on which hood it uses. the one for the 80-200 push pull and 28-70 wont fit, both are too big.

no serial numbers for both known samples :o :o :o

somebody mentioned that this was shown once in a magazine, can anybody confirm it?

The owner of this lens contacted me a few weeks ago wanting some information as he couldn't find it on my database. He owns a camera shop in Japan and said he bought it from one of his customers. I guess it was via the yahoo auction in August last year. The original owner had another copy so there are at least two in existence. There is no serial number on the lens - on a lens like this it would normally be engraved on the aperture ring.

The cosmetics and screw-drive AF are an exact match for the AF 80-200/2.8 D ED, the two-ring version which was released in 1997. It wouldn't have been made after the AF-S 28-70/2.8 ED-IF which was released in early 1999, so it was probably made in 1997 or 1998 at the latest.

The yahoo auction stated the lens had fungus although it was not obvious in the pictures, I encouraged the owner to have it serviced and suggested he send it to Ric. I'm glad to see it has been cleaned and fully restored :)

Fascinating story and interesting results.

I would have preferred this focal range (28-80mm) with fixed f/2.8 across the range to the commercially available options, although I have gotten used to 24-70mm, I'd like a bit more long range.

I think the flare could be fixed using modern coatings.
