new Nikon glass - SR
« on: January 06, 2020, 21:31:14 »
So SR with ED and FL elements. Information just leaked in the specifications and price of 120-300 f2.8E (also for the D780 and 70-200 f2.8S). The new Z-Nikkor also has SR glass

"Covers the versatile 120–300 mm focal length range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture.
・Performance equivalent to a prime lens keeps pace with fast-moving or erratic subjects. An electromagnetic diaphragm ensures precise exposures at high frame rates.
・25 elements in 19 groups, with Nikon’s ED glass and SR glass as well as ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings.
・Nikon’s new SR glass, as well as ED glass to combat chromatic aberration. As a result, colour fringing is greatly reduced, and harder-to-control blue light (short wavelength spectrum) is thoroughly compensated for. Images are sharper than ever before and contrast is exceptional.
・Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) gives you a four-stop advantage, even with a teleconverter activated.
・Assignable function buttons, smooth switching between horizontal and vertical orientations, and more.
・Faces the front of the lens for optimum balance and more comfortable transportation.
・Solid construction and extensive sealing readies this lens for trackside conditions in any weather."

Almost the same price as the 180-400 f/4 TC1.4...

BTW, somebody has an article about Nikon’s ARNEO coating ?

SR = Super Refractive glass ??
"colour fringing is greatly reduced, and harder-to-control blue light (short wavelength spectrum) is thoroughly compensated for ..."
Sounds like it does the same job as Canon's BR coating (Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics: "a special form of coating applied to a glass element within a lens. The coating reduces the incidence of chromatic aberration, specifically blue colour fringing)."
However SR sounds like a type of glass, not a coating. It's also used on the new Z 70-200/2.8

ARNEO = Anti Reflection NEO (new = new) ??
From Nikon brochure: "is more effective for incident light from a vertical direction..."
This sounds like regular multi-layer coatings such as NIC and SIC, which are most effective for light passing through the lens in a perpendicular direction. These coatings are less effective at shallow angles, which is where Nano Crystal Coat is more effective. I'm just guessing here but from the description it sounds like an improved form of multi-layer coating that we had since the 1970s.

Here is the official explanation for the SR element:

https://www.nikon.com/news/2020/0107_lens_01.htm

Unexpectedly, the new 70-200/f2.8 "Z" lens also employs an SR element:

The Z lens doesn't seem to include "SR" in its nomenclature.

The new Z 70-200 also employs two aspheric lenses, the MTF are very high - even better than the F mount version which is (was) already the best 70-200 on the market.

Surely the "multi-focusing system" is just a more sophisticated version of floating elements or close range correction (CRC) where different elements or groups move independently to improve performance at infinity and close range. This has been around since 1967 since the Nikkor-N 24/2.8 was introduced :o :)

I wonder just how close these two new lenses are to being apochromatic in the visible light range.  Time will no doubt reveal.

One of the reasons for this high MTF towards the corner of the frame could be a larger image circle to cover the movement of IBIS of Z bodies.

Yes, true, that's why the minimal distance is 50cm! Fantastic!  LZ

Both lenses looks like Nikon went all in for image quality, wow they have nice specs both of them  8) Will be interesting to hear how the 70-200 handles in real world on the Z6 and 7 - They kept zoom in the front for the 70-200mm and the new 120-300mm follows the trend  ::)

Evidently Nikon has different naming philosophy, whereas F-mount lenses names are filled up with all kind of feature-abbreviations, Z-mount lenses naming ist following a more spartanic approach.

Already have aquired a 70-200/2,8 FL lens not too long ago i am not ready to go for another one. Stellar lens with the downside of the Zoom ring in front. Evidently and unfortuately Nikon is not seeing this as experiment but consistent new "feature", as we can see with the 70-200s, 180-400, 80-400 and the new 120-300 mm lens

I think the lettering is brief because letters are only added to differentiate between lenses and since the Z mount lenses are Z Nikkors, they already differentiate themselves in name from previous Nikon lenses. Once Nikon start to make second-generation Z lenses, I think you will start to see letters added to the lenses.

The MTF of the new 70-200/2.8 S seems to be a further evolution of the already class-leading FL 70-200/2.8E. Nikon seem to be delivering on the promise of superior optical quality for the Z mount (although it's not like F mount lenses did not already show evolution in image quality - they did). It's interesting to see how the market reacts and whether they will embrace this approach or just complain about missing vertical grips, wrong type of memory cards, and not class-leading subject tracking AF.

the D780 is a Z6 with mirror. Very interesting.
