I guess the pincushion distortion is one of the common problem of a telephoto design.  Perhaps the speed of f3.0 was prioritized when it was designed.

Thank you for the further quote.  I did see many Vivitar lenses in the camera shops when I lived in Munich in the early 80s, but all I saw was not those of Series 1 but mediocre models.
