Run straight through with no corrections applied -- probably could be tweaked better but that wasn't the point here.

The main impression is the lens is insanely sharp, but in a very smooth, velvety manner.

Yes, think so. With a lens of this calibre even the minor flaws are mercilessly revealed.

A small under-exposure would change the effect of the glare a lot, often seen it shooting the classic Noct-Nikkor as well as other sharp fast lenses wide open like 50mm f/1.2 f/1.4 and lately I have seen it on 105mm AF-D f/2 DC - small changes in exposure can have huge impact on reducing glare and issues with highlights.Rendering is close to Noct-Nikkor, smooth tonal transitions - Very nice!

Some portrait pictures, I'm not impressed to be honest, I had much higher hopes for a cleaner image regarding APO correction. They also show how difficult it is to get the focus right. Most funny detail is that f/0.95 turns into f/1  ::) That is just not ok...

Not too impressed too  by the galleries available so far.

BTW there appears not be too much practical difference between f/ 0,95 and f/1 - more like a renommée issue (like the former 1/300 X sync speed). Nikon should have been more courageous and make this lens f/0,5 or at least f/0,7

f/0.7 would incur minimum 4*weight of current design.

Probably yes, but that would not be the heaviest lens that had been lugged around (the 7 kilo 300/2 or my 6.x kilo first version of the 600/4 comes to mind). yes its insane for a "standard" focal length but even the f/0,95 Noct is the first 58 mm with tripod mount

That would be a monster  :o I think they are on the money with sharpness and the look and feel, the corrections are just a (the only) compromise they apparently had to do,,,

Well, a huge variation in prices all round the world...

(today's exchange rate)

Japan 1265000 JPY = 10469 €
Norway 93990 NOK = 9205 €
Netherlands 8999 € = 8999 €
USA 8000 $ = 7213 €

That's a fork of about 2800 € !!!

Now, the results of your estimates.
If a bracket  (Francis: 4000$ to 7000$) has been given, I have averaged it out to (low+high)/2 (=5500$ = 4959€)
All converted to €

1st Frank Fremerey: 5729 € (wins trip to Mars)
2nd Birna Rørslett: 5590 €
3rd Bill De Jager: 5407€
an then Erik, Francis, Nikfuson, Pluton, Aguinaldo (4959€ down to 4057€)

Fons, I don't have a converter for old currencies, I have to pull your estimate of f 2.93 :(

Yes, the shots I've seen besides Birna's have not impressed me. Perhaps many of the photographers are not used to manual focus?

Even after all this time, I'm still not 100% convinced that CNX-D was the ideal path for Nikon to take. CNX3 would have made more sense .. anyhow
There seems to be a very small distortion associated with the lens too.
EXIF/makernotes don't seem to display it, but distortion control was activated on the file in CNX-D. Made a very very small difference to geometry of the image switching on and off .. and the reason for my distrust of CNX-D
Whilst clicking distortion control on and off, I also noted a huge colour change in the image. Like it went from Portrait to Vivid(or Landscape) and or a WB change.
Models skin changed to a warmer rendering  .. nothing else played with other than the tick box for distortion. Very strange.
Anyhow, Erics comment re slight green on right eye .. easy fix in CNX-D with the activation of the axial color aberration(from off to on) .. default setting is 50(not touched) .. just clicked on. fixed.
(image converted in CNX-D).

Only edit was to the axial color aberration in CNX-D. Distortion was left at on(as shot).

Like Birna said .. insanely sharp considering wide open and such a wide aperture. For some reason, the online jpg doesn't render anywhere near as sharp as on the PC too.

By default, portrait only uses a low sharpening routine, and fairly coarse at that. Setting sharpening to (say) 4 instead, renders even more pop in the sharp areas of detail. tweaking even more reveals even more again. Very good .. in face insane!  ;D

My copy of the NOCT was charged to my card today at B&H, so I assume they are readying it for shipping. It will arrive tomorrow, Saturday, Nov 1st. I can't wait. For me, for the work I do, this MAY be the perfect lens. If not, back it goes. LOL.
