Supposedly one of the worst nikkors.

I think all the 'reviews' are based on the epoch of film.  And on the AF-D version, which is a different lens-design. 

Apparently the Non-D version is based on the 5 elements lens design of the Series-E 28/2.8

Not too bad, taken the 'reputation' into account.  A bit more than average.  Small, petit lens, like the 20/2.8 AF.

 I had to dial +1 on the D850 to get a better exposure. A bit dark in matrix-metering.
