Nikon d800 in 2018
« on: March 22, 2018, 21:52:30 »
Question: I´m very happy with my current d750/d500 as they cover my shooting needs very well but I have been offered a used d800 body with very low shutter count -less than 10k- for 650€. Thoughts?

Paco,

I think that unless you want the higher pixel count, nothing else will better vs your current equipment

In this case: stay with what you have, except you need a backup body

If it was the D800E  I would have said yes. On the other hand, E650 for a full frame camera with 36mp is pretty good.

The user interface on the D800 is similar to the D500, the “pro” style ;)
I use both the D800 and the D500 for anything fast, or for convenience, I use the a Df just photographing for fun.
The AF might be slow, but I use the D800 for sports in DX mode, it has replaced a D700, and works ok.

If perfect condition and such low SC..., you could buy it, try it and in case it doesn't add opportunities for you, sell it with some benefit...

I've got a D800E purchased new in late 2012, and a D800 purchased in early 2013.  Both still work fine.  Until Nikon places a modern 24MP+ sensor in a "full pro" body (like my old D3), I'm not motivated to buy anything new.

It depends, how you see it. In my experience, the D800 is absolutely unique machine. Its abilities to detailing is marvelous, and level of noise produced by its sensor is amazingly low. It is impossible to compare this camera to ANYTHING else - 800E, 810, 850, 750, DF, 4 or 5 are great, but completely different machines, with its own pluses and minuses, each.  There is nothing on the market like this old 800, its unique, it is not best, but simply unique.  Take a look at this  image, from vacation, and crops ,  20160609-060-2-2 by longzoom, o20160609-060-2 by longzoom, on Flic20160609-20160609-060-2 by longzoom, on Flickrkrn Flickrs,    Made for curiosity,   LR for crops only,  used to improve the given terrible light, nothing more was done, so, do not judge color in shadows, please!  The lens was  80-400G at 400mm, D800 body. ISO 2200, BTW!  THX!   LZ

The higher sensel count is a huge argument if shooting wildlife
over using a TC whatever the power. I would, though, approach
the D800E with much greater enthusiasm.
Light is free… capturing it is not!

I am following the new releaseøs of Nikon cameras, but still keep my D800 and fullspectrum D600 (you don't need more than 24 MP in IR because diffraction makes everthing taken with a smaller aperture than f/11 unsharp). D800 will approve resolution down to f/16 and if you are like me, loving f/1.4 lenses or stop down to f/16, the D800E or better cameras like the new D850/Z7 the advantage is minor. The D800 still have better dynamic range than the new D850 at lower ISO around ISO 800. The D800 is the best camera ever made compered to the time it was released, and still is competitive. If you can't make IT with the D800, you will never make IT with anything else...

Personally, I'd grab that D800 at that price in a heartbeat, & dump the D500.

I'm still operating D800s, one regular and one 'E'.  The finder optics annoy me, while they didn't on my previous D3/D2/D200.
The imager, however, was a substantial improvement over the D3 and is still relevant.  12 megapixels wasn't enough and 36 MP may be a bit too much for most of my needs, but in 2012 and 2013 the D600 and D750 bodies had little appeal.  I'm not motivated to replace the D800s until another substantial improvement in dynamic range occurs....or they wear out.

I've had two D800 with AF issues that Nikon wasn't able to fix. I then replaced it with a D750 which I really like.
The D800 sensor is good but I'd rather go for a D810 or even D850 if high res was important.
