would you trade a D800 for a D750 or wait for a D810/D850
« on: January 14, 2018, 14:01:05 »
what’s your opinion?
I’m thinking selling my D800 and getting a D750 beside my D800E.
The D800 and D800E are so similar that I would only keep the D800E.
What I like at the D750 is the smaller body, expeed4 and high iso, what I don’t like is the consumer concept.
What I like at the D800 are the 36MP and the perfect build quality.

Or should  I save some money and get a D810 or even a D850?

What would you do?

i sold the D800 for the D750 because of the HUGE files  :o :o :o

the D750 hits a perfect balance if there is ever one.

I would say get a D850 or a D750 instead.

with the D750, you get smaller and manageable files.

with the D850, you get amazing files (but big) and some of the world-beating features it has.

to be honest, it all depends on what you shoot. I quite shooting landscapes when I got married and had a child so the D800 had to go.

Peter,

I would be inclined to sell the D800E, keep the D800 as a backup then buy a D850. I don't think you will get much use out of a D800E once you buy a D850. If you get a D850 keep the batteries out of the camera you keep as a backup. Store them at about a 50% charge. If left in a body and they go 100% dead they cannot be recharged as the charger will not recognize them. I did that with a battery left in my D2H. There is a chip in these battery backs that must function.

Ideally I'd have a D850 and a D500. That's a fair bit more than pocket lint.  :(

Best,

if you do not mind the change in the controls I think the D750 is a great option, it focus down to -3EV, smaller files, and better high ISO, and about 200 g. lighter

this is a question i often make myself, when my D800 dies, what's next ?

I would keep the D800E  and get a D600. (nearly same sensor as D750 without tiltable screen but a lot cheaper)    You will save money to invest in some glass  ;)

If you like and can handle the 36MP files, D810 or 850 would be the answer.

I would agree in terms of the sensor performance.  The only frustrations I had with my D610 (essentially the same as D600) was that the AF area coverage was too small, and that there is no way to assign the "OK" button to 100% magnification for the preview.

I agree, it's very frustrating. Also the fact the D600 does not save the raw uncompressed.     On the other hand, as a back up-camera, these disadvantages are easily to overcome.

D750 doesn't save the uncompressed RAW either.  Do you find any noticeable difference between the uncompressed and the losslessly compressed?

n   As for me, the answer is simple - IBIS mirrorless with adapter, to continue use all of my glass, including MF ones. It isn't the bodies of D800 and up ain't good anymore - these are illustrious, for many years ahead - but I, personally, am willing to try something else.  LZ

To my feeling yes. But that is hard to proof scientifically. The uncompressed RAWs of the Df and 800E give a lot of extra room to work with, especially with darker zones and noise. To my feeling. It's also difficult to compare because of the different sensors.

The flexibility of large uncompressed RAWS are also noticable with the Fuji S5 Pro (at least when you shoot at ISO100 to get the full dynamic range).

The raws of the 12? MP Fuji S5 (25MB) are sometimes larger than the 'compressed' 24MP  D600 files.

Thank you for the details, John.  I think I read somewhere that the lossless compression will lose 1 bit depth.  I have no experience of working with the uncompressed RAW, so I have no clue...

I that case it is not lossless ...
If lossless compressed really lives up to its name it should yield identical results as uncompressed RAW.

I´m a big fan of the d750 (iq, high iso, af, etc...) and have never needed the big files the d800 produces so, yes. Combined with a d500 or d850 depending on your demands will be a killer combo, I think.

Ich am a very acoustic person and do not like the snappy sound of the D750. The D600/800/810/850 produce a much better sound in my ears. I would keep the 800 and get a 500 as a good addition. High ISO is great. AF is great. AF coverage is phantastic. Battery life is superb and ergonomics plus speed speed speed.

A high res 800 slow shooting FX machine combined with a fast DX is great.

Yes the D850 is fast and high resolution but she costs a lot and is not worlds apart from the D500.

I would have to agree about the shutter sound of D750 which was one of few things I didn't like about this camera.  I felt D850 sounds very similar.  On the other hand, the sharp and trebly sound of D-one-digit models, D800 and D500 can be good for shooting professional models or sports, but a bit too loud and obtrusive in some situations.
