Nikon officially announced the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED lens (this post is being updated, refresh this page for the latest version):

A 28 mm wide-angle fixed focal length lens that reproduces the natural expansion of a space
Consistently superior resolution, all the way to the edges of the imaging area, beginning at the maximum aperture
Beautiful bokeh that utilizes the speed (brightness) of the f/1.4 maximum aperture
Effective suppression of sagittal coma flare, often visible as the elongation or distortion of point images in night landscapes, for superior point image reproduction characteristics beginning at the maximum aperture
Adoption of two ED glass elements for effective compensation of axial chromatic aberration
Nano Crystal Coat adopted achieving effective reduction of ghost and flare for sharp, clear images
Sample photos (more here)
The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED will be available in late June for a suggested retail price of $1999.95. Pre-order links will be posted shortly.

Must be difficult from now on to sell the old AF 28/1.4 at the bloated prices they sold for before the arrival of the new version :D

I have pre-ordered a review sample of the new model.

It has a truly cinematic look.

I am actually most interested in this aspect:
"Adoption of three aspherical lens elements effectively suppresses sagittal coma flare for excellent point image reproduction, while the adoption of two ED glass elements provides effective compensation for axial chromatic aberration, and Nikon's exclusive Nano Crystal Coat effectively reduces ghost and flare."

COMA CONTROL YAY
Is it time for me to sell that Samyang 24/1.4? If Nikon delivers what it promises, this lens will become an astrolandscape photographer's dream! Sure, there's the Sigma 20/1.4 (bad coma), 14/1.8 (from test photos, also not too good in terms of coma), and the Samyang 14/2.4 (really good coma correction), I'd be happier with future-proof Nikon glass. I'm sounding a like a paid Nikon shill now haha. I'm so excited.

Hope this one doesn't flop. Hope it uses a ring SWM (doubt it though) as well.

My current list of best coma corrected wide angle lenses (from the best):
#1 Samyang 14 f/2.4
#2 Tamron 15-30 f/2.8
#3 Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 Samyang 14 f/2.8
#4 Nikon 20 f/1.8
#5 Samyang 24 f/1.4

YES, indeed!
The old 28/1.4D is already a pretty solid lens, in my opinion. Pretty sharp wide open, beautiful rendering and nice colours (yeah I do care about colour rendering too).
Saw a new boxed one selling for $5555 AUD on Fleabay... just wow. They can be had at a cheaper price, ranging from $1300-1600 (USD) on the Chinese Taobao site. These usually have some little issues, cracked M/F ring and dented filter ring.

The 28/2.0 AI/AIS is dead; long live the AF-S 28mm f/1.4E ED!

Dave Hartman who owns two 28/2.0 AIS Nikkors. Do I have to declare the pennies on their eyes?

Back in 1978 when I was building my second Nikon system with multi-coated AI Nikkors they cost about $225 (1978 USD) each. Today's Nikkor primes should cost about $850.00. Should I be upset at a price of 2K for one stop and AF? :)

I think old AI and AIS lenses offer a great value, but also think that for some people AF, improved contrast through nanocoat, improved sharpness, and weather sealing do offer substantial value. I'm not one to spend more than 2 kilobucks on a 28mm lens though.

Well you can get a 28/1.8 AF-S for that, and you get AF and nano coat as bonuses. Smooth manual focus is subtracted.

Price in the Netherlands for the 28E is €2469. Even more expensive than the 105E (€2409).  :(

I was a little surprised by the AFS 28/1.4E, I didn't think there would be much market for such a lens bracketed so closely by the AFS 35/1.4, 24/1.4, and AFS 28/1.8. It does complete a lineup of f/1.4 primes from 24 - 105mm.

I would have put updates for the 135DC and AF 180/2.8 higher on the priority list...

Oh yes, I would have loved to see a new 180/2.8. Could Nikon design it like the 300PF? That would be cool!

Not sure a 180/2.8 would benefit much from PF, it is already quite compact.

Me, too.

My wild guess for the next FP lens would be an unbelievably compact and lightweight 300/2.8.

It is not unlikely.

I have no doubt that the optical performance would be awesome.

The price will, no doubt, also be awesome.
