DJI Apparently Now Owns Hasselblad
« on: January 07, 2017, 13:08:12 »
There is an intense discussion on LuLa (and an article) purporting that DJI (Chinese drone company) apparently now controls  Hasselblad (or has equal position on their board), after increasing their shares to majority... and what this might mean.

Not a real discussion, reading the first page of that 'forum' with all kind of 'personal' attacks....  stopped reading it.

It is true that they are sorting it out, but the article is interesting for those of us who are waiting for the X1D (and the Fuji GFX) to appear.

Leicarumors reported last autumn that, "Leica Camera and Huawei establish new R&D centre in Wetzlar":

Hopefully DJI will be a long term industrial owner, which can further develop Hasselblad. I think that's what they want to do as well.

People can just as well start getting used to Chinese companies buying Western companies now. That trend will continue.

Btw. The 4G telecom infrastructure in Norway was delivered by the Chinese manufacturer Huawei.

As the successor, 5G, probably will be.

I care about Nikon or Fuji, but Hasselblad & Apple? I do not buy their products anyway, so ... whatever.

DJI seems to be a progressive enough company judging from their drones :o :o :o
I hope they knock some sense into Hasselblad's management ::)

I think this rumour is largely false, and mostly clickbait.

DJI simply owns a majority stake of the company, that doesn't mean they bought it or owns it or whatever.

There's also other issues, I don't think the Swedish government will just let the Chinese buy one of their companies, I don't think the US would allow that either. Unfortunately we don't have a free market. Hasselblad owns patents and designs of technology that goes far beyond their excellent camera systems.

There are certain companies that the western government wouldn't worry about, but one that plays a huge role in camera and optics simply isn't one of them.

Yeah, simply a rumour. Time will tell however. I take these xxx bought yyy with a huge grain of salt.

The company is not Swedish now and has not been for a long time. It was owned by a Hong Kong based Shriro Group since 2003 till 2011. In June 2011 Ventizz Capital Fund IV L.P. purchased 100 % of Hasselblad from Shriro. So if Ventizz decides (or decided) to sell the stock to DJI it is their business and the swedes have no say. Ventizz Capital Partners is a German/Swiss/Austrian fund.

I have no knowledge of the rumored business deal between DJI and Ventizz, but it doesn't sound impossible to me at all.
