As common with most Nikkors of the same vintage/era, this lens is best worked from the front.

Hello, John. Which front ring are you talking about? The one with the numbers or the chrome front barrel?
You may want to soften up what was used to glue it

You may need to put plenty of alcohol to loosen this part. 
I also use an old rubber flip flop and bored a hole in the center and use it to grip that ring.
that ring is flimsy by the way and if you warped it, you will not get this lens to focus smoothly

Yes I know that and I thank you. Just that I'm now obsessed with the 43-86 and the 36-72...
