As exactly Dr Klaus Schmitt noticed these lenses interesting on an open aperture. It is possible to put a diaphragm to or after a lens, but often we get vignetting. Putting a diaphragm is necessary between lenses, into a lens. Putting in Rodenstock is very difficult, he is fully filled by lenses (9 шт.) gaps between them are too small. A diaphragm is easily enough put in lenses collected on the chart of Petzval are 4 lenses in two groups.

Vladimir, these are delightful images of an attractive model.

It is interesting to see how these lenses behave when they are focussed beyound the short subject distances used to make the images we often see made with them (such as the dreamy smooth bokeh rich close up images often featured on this site). However these lenses also show great potential for longer subject distances, e.g. the Rodenstock Heligon 100 мм f / 1,6 used in your posts (303, 296) below.

Excellent illustrations of the quality of the Rodenstock etc. optic. To elaborate on what Hugh says, after having abused these lenses by putting them way off their designed operational range to get super soft blurry pictures, it is refreshing to learn what we tend to forget, namely, they are high-quality performers. Provided they are allowed to work as they are intended, towards infinity focus that is.

Was looking for this VISIONAR f1.9 200mm monster of a projection lens to complete my VISIONAR collection for quite a while...
and voilá today at a photo fair, I saw a just too well known lens silhouette on the next table, while chatting with a nice Olympus service guy ...
so I interrupted my chat, went over there, negotiated a bit, and came back to continue my chat with a big happy grin in my face...
as the price I got it for basically was a steal ;-) ;-) ;-)

Rainy day today, but had to take a few snaps with it right away...

Quite happy with it so far.... ;-)

Why even bother to force an aperture to it, I usually use mine as they are, if needed a rear mounted ND filter works well...
