An overnight covering of snow has cleansed and brightened the landscape. Three images made this morning, within a few metres of each other.

I can certainly ask, but one has to careful about exactly what is wanted - the weather gods do like to play little tricks; like the time I was in the Cairngorm mountains for some early summer hiking - it was the 1st week of June - we woke to find 15cm of fresh snow at the low-valley campsite; up on the heights it was nearly 50cm.

Such occurrences are not frequent but they are not all that rare, either. On an other occasion I was walking from Fort William in the west Highlands to Cape Wrath (Wross - the turning point), the n.w. tip of the Scottish mainland. It is a 330km walk and I set off on 1st May. Twelve days later I walked through 3 days of northerly blizzards (and it was a wilderness walk - no roads!).

Love the mood and the weather and the tones.

But in the first you chose to make the tree a matte for the mountain.

Many thanks, Erik, Andrew, Keith and Elsa - your comments are greatly appreciated. (I know everyone says that, but *I* mean it  ;)  ;D )

Erik - you are very kind to say so, but I sometimes feel that I'm becoming a bit of a one-trick pony. I can do decent landscapes in my sleep, almost, and I'm starting to feel a little dissatisfied. This is the reason that, when I go to very different places - like Japan, I try to shoot very different subject-matter, not just Japanese landscapes.

Beautifully captured, Dave. The snow/frost really does enhance the landscape, especially in #2 where it etches the fallen tree. My favorite.

I'm happy that we don't all have the same favourite - my own favourite is #3, and I've photographed that lightning-struck stump many times.
