these zeiss lenses i mention have no cpu contacts, so my only guess now is that register distances are not accurate,( which is more sensitive at larger apertures).

I have many old lenses for Nikon without cpu, but the dot works, D800.

Right, i dont have such issues with the many old nikkors i use, but with the zf 35/2 and 85/1.4, maybe with 100/2 i am not sure about the last , well its a macrolens anyway so i use  lv here, thank you Karl.

The green dot may behave differently with different lenses. Due to some unknown-to-me optical principles, my ZF 85/1.4 and ZF.2 25/2(both now gone) seemed more difficult to eye focus than other ZF lenses.

But it also works with old manuel Vivitars and Sigmas, why does it not work with Zeiss?

On all Nikon bodies?  My experience with D700 and Zf35/2 is a bit the same, on the Df and 800E it all goes smoother. I hardly use the green dot by the way, focus-screen only. Only in dark situations it is inevitable.

With my D3, the ZF 35/2 was relatively easy to eye focus.  It is only slightly more difficult with the D800/E, but only because my D800 finder is optically inferior to my D3 finder.

first my eyesight is not optimal, second distance to focuspoint is important, third which focus crosspoint is selected, when ambient light distorts contrasts,
on the d800 i have 1,2X magnifying eyepiece with helps and liveview is no problem

DPR is reporting that the 85mm in F mount has an electronic aperature, they don't mention anything about it on the 90mm

For me a drawback to most non-Nikkor lenses is they frequently focus the reverse direction to Nikkor lenses. This messes with my reflexes when I use manual focus.

Years ago I bought a 400/6.3 Tele-Astronar preset lens. Later when I bought an 80-200/4.5 Nikkor I found I focused the correct direction at the close end of the zoom but backwards at the long end. The fingers had learned that long lenses focus the reverse direction to other lenses. I parted ways with the 400/6.3.

A switch to a different camera system isn't much of a problem. It's when lenses for one system focus reverse to each other.

the 85mm f/1.8VC looks exciting as well. I tried their 35mm and 45mm and they were both AWESOME lenses for their price. the build quality is also great

Indeed. The 45/1.8 is not only good, it is also a "lens with a personality", and its "signature" is very different from Zeiss. This is all good news.
