Nikon D750 proprietary USB connector?
« on: February 21, 2016, 16:41:30 »
I haven't had any use for the USB connection on my D750, but I tried some quite timelapse stuff (with a bad result) and wanted to use the USB connection for qDslrDashboard. No problems, I have all kinds of USB cables lying around, just a matter of finding the correct one. Not so, it seems Nikon uses their own special connector:

Another thing to mention about the USB connectivity, the cable itself is Nikon proprietary, a connection plug that is only specific to Nikon cameras. Another source of endless frustration if you happen to lose it, but then again it’s so useless why would you even bother.

What kind of brainfart made anyone think that was a good idea?

Sorry, rant over.

Edit: the link is to a compromised site. (Nuclear Exploit)

I was a little surprised that the D810 comes with a USB 3 cable  :o

My D800 (built in 2012) has a USB 3 also.  Maybe Nikon bought too many of those weird little proprietary ones back in the D2/D3 days?

No, it looks almost like a mini usb connector, but isn't.

Ups, sorry about the link. I didn't notice anything, but I'm using uBlock Origin and such, which might have blocked any bad stuff.

The D800 comes with a USB 3 cable with a special feature on the camera side for a USB cable clip that came with the camera. I bought a spare Nikon USB 3 cable so it would work with the USB cable clip but now I'll use another form of stress relief if I tether. My RRS L-Plate interferes with the cable clip. If using the cable clip one would want another Nikon USB 3 cable, otherwise there is surely an additional markup in the price.

Thanks for the extra info, I've sent an email to the person behind the site. It's not a site I've visited before, I found it through a Google search.

It's not proprietary, it is just a less common usb connector. It is a USB Mini-B 8 pin connector used by Nikon, Panasonic, Pentax, & Sony to name a few.

The more common connector is the USB Mini-B 5 pin.

You can find a list of cameras and their connectors here:

The developer of qDSLR Dashboard told me that one could drive the D750 by WiFi from qDSLR Dashboard...

Have not tried it myself yet.

Ahh...thanks guys.

The number of different USB connectors is slightly crazy and this one is certainly one of the lesser used ones. Hopefully we'll be past that in a few years time and use USB Type C everywhere...one can dream right? ;)

I'll test out the wifi feature soon.

I have the hardware unit and the software on my iPad, iPhone, and Mac.  The unit works very well with all my Nikons, D3, D3S, D800, D700, D600, D300, D300S, and D90.  I havent tried on the V1, D70, and D80 yet.
